I am presuming you just need it for a few days at most, not routine use, and you don't want to throw a lot of money at the problem. Also assuming you are in the US as distance is in ft (but 220 volts is a european voltage, it 240 in the US)

First determine the wire size of the outlet you are currently using for the compressor. You will need about 30ft of wire that is this size or bigger. I'm thinking you will probably need #12 or larger wire since compressors typically have pretty beefy motors. I would rummage through what you already have on hand and see if there is something that will work. You could use left over romex cable if you have some, (you could even borrow some from a friend or neighbor since you will be only needing it temporarily). Shut off the power to the outlet you want to connect the compressor to, remove the outlet, connect the extenstion wire to the wires that used to be hooked to the outlet with wire nuts. Secure this wire with a staple, duct tape, etc so you...

The plug on the tanning bed is a 6-20P plug (250V 20 Amp), but the receptacle is a 10-30R (125/250V 30 Amp), so they aren't quite the same. The tanning bed expects 2 hots and a ground wire, but the outlet provides 2 hots and a neutral (which is almost, but not quite the same)

The "correct" way to do this would be to replace the dryer plug with a properly grounded 6-20R receptacle and replace the 30 Amp breaker in the panel with a 20 Amp. The only difficulty may be in finding a code compliant way to hook up the ground terminal of the 6-20R using existing wiring.

If the existing shared neutral/ground wire is bare or green, then you can use that as-is, just make sure that it's connected to the grounding busbar in the panel. (a main panel may have shared ground/neutral busbar(s), a subpanel will have separate busbars for ground and neutral and it is important for safety to terminate grounding conductors on the correct busbar). If the existing neutral wire is not already a...

220 and 240v are interchangable in this case. The motor being rated at 240V doesn't mean diddly to you. You care about the amp rating (commonly shown as FLA or "full load amps" on some motors). I can almost guarantee the breaker that feeds your dryer is rated for at least 7 amps.

The breaker for your dryer should be a double pole breaker and should have three wires for it. 2 are "Hot" and one is Ground. Your home is fed with 2 thick cables which are 120V+ and -, or 240V potential between them. The center tap would be your "neutral, or 120V, which is used in your receptacles, lights, etc. Major appliances like Dryers use 220-240V (again, those numbers are interchangable)

As long as you can plug it into a 220-240V outlet, you are fine. The key here is that it is a single phase motor. If it wasn't you would need to buy a transformer and yadda yadda, we won't get into that.

If you want to add a 220-240V circuit, you need another double pole breaker at the correct...

I have a 220v tanning bed.

The bed has a 4ft cord ; need to extend another 10 feet to reach 220v dryer outlet .

The bed came with a homemade extension, but plug doesn't fit our outlet.

Homemade extension wire is 10 gauge; 15 feet long.

Is it safe to just replace the plug on the homemade extension with one that fits my outlet?

Thanks in advance!!

A special message for my friends –

With the types and number of storms we’ve been getting, you might be looking for a new generator, or hauling out the one you’ve been storing in the garage. Unless you already have a transfer switch, you don’t want to be caught off guard with an inadequate generator extension cord. Make sure that it is of sufficient gauge and length for your purposes. Remember, you must keep the running generator AWAY from any living space. Don’t put your family in jeopardy because your cord is too short. ALWAYS be safe.

What Are the Differences?

Standard outdoor three prong 5-15 male and female ends

Here you will find out what you need to know about extension cords for portable generators. These are also referred to as generator cords.

How do you understand gauge wire sizes and how does it relate to the length of cord? What’s the difference between a four prong extension cord and a three prong one? What does AWG mean?...

You'll often hear voltages in your home referred to as 110V, 115V, or 120V. This can be confusing but the bottom line is they are referring to the exact same thing. 120V is the AC voltage on a single hot wire in your home with respect to neutral (or ground). With resistance in the wiring in your house, this 120V will likely have dropped to 115V by the time it gets to the appliance you are powering. At the end of a long extension cord you could even drop to 110V. This is why you'll see the different terms used. In fact many appliances or devices will be rated to 110V or 115V which basically tells you they are tested to operate down to a lower voltage. This gives you assurance that at the end of a long circuit or extension cord it will still operate fine.

In the United States, utility companies are required to provide a split-phase 240V feed to your house. This consists of two legs of 120VAC that are 180 degrees out of phase with one another. ...
