That outlet is called a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). It's there to protect people from electrical shock, so it is completely different from a fuse.

The question on appliance plugs talks about fuses. The idea behind a fuse is to protect a house from an electrical fire. If the hot wire were to accidentally touch the neutral wire for some reason (say, because a mouse chews through the insulation, or someone drives a nail through the wire while hanging a picture, or the vacuum cleaner sucks up an outlet cord and cuts it), an incredible amount of current will flow through the circuit and start heating it up like one of the coils in a toaster. The fuse heats up faster than the wire and burns out before the wire can start a fire.

A GFCI is much more subtle. When you look at a normal 120-volt outlet in the United States, there are two vertical slots and then a round hole centered below them. The left slot is slightly larger than the right. The left slot is called...

Types of electrical receptacles: how to select the right type of electrical receptacle (outlet):

It's important to use 20-A rated receptacles if the electrical circuit is a 20-amp circuit. Don't install a grounded electrical receptacle plug on a circuit that has no electrical ground. Remember to install AFCI or GFCI devices where they are required.

This article explains how to match the receptacle type to the circuit type and use. We describe both 120V receptacles and 240V receptacles.

This article series describes how to choose, locate, and wire an electrical receptacle in a home. Electrical receptacles (also called electrical outlets or "plugs" or "sockets") are simple devices that are easy to install, but there are details to get right if you want to be safe.

It depends on what type of cord you are changing to. I think what you're describing as a sqaure black block is the terminal block.

If your new cord has four wires, should be black, white, red, and green. If this is the case, it goes like this:

Black to the far left screw (L2)

White to the middle screw (N)

Red to the far right (L1)

Green goes to the cabinet, usually behind a green screw.

If this is the case, you're changing from a 3 wire cord to a 4 wire cord, and your 3 wire cord is still connected; then behind the middle screw is probably a strap connected underneath it. When you change to the 4 wire cord, bend and push the strap up out of the way for future use if needed. It acts as the ground for the 3 wire cord.

With the 4 wire cord, the green mounted to the cabinet acts as the ground.

Now......
If i'm wrong with the above, and you're intalling a 3 wire cord; they could all be the same color (the wires). If so, just...

Wiring a GFCI plug receptacle

Photo 1: Remove the outlet

Turn off the power at the main circuit panel and remove the old outlet. Disconnect the wires by clipping them close to the outlet.

Photo 2: Strip the wires

Strip the insulation from the wires to expose the amount of wire shown on the stripping gauge located on the back of the GFCI plug receptacle. Connect the hot and neutral wires that provide power to the “line” terminals of the GFCI plug. The terminal for the neutral wire will be marked “white” or “neutral.”

Photo 3: Connect other outlets

Remove the tape covering the “load” terminals and connect the wires leading to another outlet or outlets to these terminals. Again, the white neutral terminal will be marked. Fold the wires back into the box and screw on the GFCI receptacle and cover plate.

Photo 4: Label the outlets

Attach the “GFCI-protected outlet” label to downstream outlets. Test the downstream outlet by...

Do you need extra outlets, and you'd rather plug into a wall? Power bars are unsightly and who wants extension cords snaking all over the floor? Besides, these can be fire hazards as well as overly attractive to small children.

Maybe you are changing the location of the TV or installing an over-the-range microwave, or maybe you bought a new computer desk. Whatever the reason, there isn't a handy outlet for the equipment and you need one. This is when it becomes necessary to add a new plug-in by wiring it into an existing one.

This article will walk you through not only the mechanics of putting a new electrical outlet into the wall, but also running the wire and tapping into the existing circuit. The tools and materials will be discussed as well as the procedures and tips for doing the job in the easiest manner possible.

While the task will take some work and may involve crawling through attics or crawl spaces, it is not particularly esoteric or difficult to...

Check your home’s electrical outlets to see if any have ground fault circuit interrupters, or GFCIs, like the one shown here. Building codes in most states now require that GFCI outlets be installed in “wet” locations such as kitchens, baths, laundry rooms, garages, or any place there is danger from moisture-related electrical shock. A GFCI has its own built-in circuit breaker that can sense an electrical imbalance, or fault, and instantaneously shut off power at the outlet to prevent user shock or a short circuit. Electrical systems in many existing homes have not been upgraded with these modern protection devices, but they are easy to install as replacements for standard...

Your GFI outlet has five different connectors, and it's important to know which is used for what.

The ground screw is connected to the ground wires coming and going to the box.

There are two sets of connectors for hot (black) and neutral (white) wires. One set, labeled LINE, is used for power coming in to the box, and the other, labeled LOAD, for outlets that will be "downstream" of the GFCI, and be protected by it. Make sure you know which is which- the old outlet will be labeled, as will the new.

If you can't see the markings on the old outlet, turn the power on briefly, and use your non-contact tester to find the hot wire- that's the one bringing power into the box. You'll connect that wire, and its white companion, to the LINE connectors. (And then turn the power off again.)

This GFCI outlet has both push-in and screw terminal connectors; some old timers (and some new-timers) will only use the screw terminals, but actually, the push-in connectors are...
