Question: Clogged Bathroom Sink

December 1, 20121 found this helpful

I have a clogged sink. The water takes time to go down. I am thinking it's from hair dye. I once disposed of the remaining hair dye I was using down the bathroom sink. Could it be the hair dye I disposed of? It was 10-12-2012.

The water just started not going down in the last week. We took the drain out and used a liquid cleaning chemical a couple times. Then we took the trap off and made sure it was clean. It was. We are thinking there must be a clog from the wall pipe out. Any suggestions,...

Solution: If the leak is loud and keeping you up, try this quick, temporary fix from home improvement expert Ron Hazelton: Tie a piece of string as close to the source of the drip as possible, and let the rest of the string to fall into the sink, with the end touching the bowl. Your drip will wick slowly, and trickle quietly down the string.

To tackle the drip once and for all, start by turning off the faucet's water supply, usually via a shut-off valve below the sink, Hazelton says. Next, remove the faucet handle or handles, usually as simple as loosening a screw. (It may be concealed beneath a decorative cap, which you can pry off with the tip of a knife.) Be sure to take photos of the faucet before and during disassembly to make reassembly a breeze. You should now see a large nut, which is part of the valve body. Loosen the nut by turning it with a wrench, then carefully lift it out. Take the valve to your local hardware store, plumbing supply company, or home improvement...

DEAR TIM: We have a horrible odor coming from the shower drain in our acrylic shower. Five different plumbers have not been able to solve the problem. The first and fourth plumbers said nothing could be done, the second and third plumbers thought the problem was caused by a rocking toilet so they replaced the toilet's wax ring. The fifth plumber said he thought the...

Running Drain and Vent Lines

Drain and vent lines must be positioned precisely, so you should install them before the supply pipes. It may be possible to simplify supply runs by moving a vent pipe over a few inches.

If you must run drainpipes across a floor, carefully calculate the amount of vertical space available; you must slope the drainpipe at 1/8 to 1/4 inch drop per foot.

Sometimes it's difficult to visualize how drainpipes will travel through walls and floors. Once you start assembling the pieces and testing them for fit, you may need to modify your plans.

Some inspectors prefer horizontal vent pipes to be sloped so condensation can run back to the drainpipes; others don't consider this important. To be on the safe side, slope the vents.

A common problem we see in many homes is experiencing a clogged bathroom drain. We get calls from customers experiencing black sludge appearing in their drains and having no idea where this disgusting, sticky, and smelly black slime is coming from. At first glance, this might be very alarming if you are experiencing this issue you are wondering how can this be possible when I have not put any of this material down the drain.

No need to worry, the black slime you are seeing is normal, it is created by a build up of bacteria living on hair, hand soaps, shaving cream, skin cells, lotion, toothpaste, and phlegm. The problem with this black sludge is that it will not go away by just pouring more water down the drain, and hoping for it to unclog itself from the water pressure.

Many customers try this method and only end up with standing water in their sink or bathtub. Continuous usage of your bathroom fixtures without clearing out the black sludge will only...

Clean the exterior of the toilet.

Wipe the outside, starting with the flush handle so as not to re-contaminate it, with a cloth soaked in disinfectant cleaner. Thoroughly wash and rinse all exterior surfaces of the toilet bowl, including the underside and flared base, the top and underside of the seat and lid, and the hinges and their mounting area with a cloth and detergent or similar cleaner.

The curvy pipe under your sink is called the P-trap. It’s designed to prevent noxious gases from backing up through a drain by holding water in the bend, sealing the trap. Also, its shape makes it possible to recover dropped items (like wedding rings) that may otherwise be lost in the drain.

Hair, accumulated soap, and dirt can all clog the drain over time, but this can be easily fixed. It is relatively simple to remove and replace a leaky or clogged P-trap without spending the money on a plumber.

Step 1 – Prepare

Before you start, put on your gloves to protect your hands from any contaminated or decayed material that you might come in contact with during the process. Also, wear a face mask to keep yourself from inhaling any mold spores or other airborne contaminants that might be present in the trap

Next, you need to make sure the water is turned off completely. Turn off the taps, but also close the valves under the sink. You don’t want someone to turn...

Clean the bathroom regularly.

Simply cleaning your bathroom on a regular basis can help with odors. You should do a routine cleaning once a week. Clean the toilet bowl, lid, and the sides of the toilet. Mop the floor. Clean the bathtub and shower, as well as the sink. You can use over-the-counter cleaning products or your own mixture of baking soda, lemon juice, and vinegar. Regular cleaning prevents odors from building up and causing problems.

Use high-quality commercial products when cleaning. Look for products that are specifically designed to target odor. It can help to know what kind of materials things like your sink, tub, and tiles are made out of, as certain cleaners may work best on certain...
