Can I connect the R and C wires directly to the HVAC transformer?

1

Based on the ladder diagram, it looks like the R terminal is only energized when all the limits (main limit and however many rollout limits there are) are closed. So if any of the limits open, the thermostat loses power (maybe).

I can't say for sure; since I'm not familiar with that board, but if that's how the furnace disables itself during a problem. Then bypassing that safety system can be quite dangerous. I'm not sure if the board monitors the limit circuit, or simply cuts power to the R terminal in the event of an open limit. If it's the latter, then connecting the thermostat directly to the transformer would be hazardous.

WARNING:

The following procedure requires working on energized equipment. If you're not comfortable with that, please contact a local licensed HVAC technician.

Connect the thermostat as normal, with the system powered on, and the thermostat not calling for heat/cool/fan. Open the access panel for the furnace, and locate...

I have an oil furnace that feeds hot water to baseboard in four zones in my house and also to a hot water tank for tap water. There is a 24vac transformer with two output wires that feed power to the electric zone valves. I want to change one thermostat in a bedroom to a Wifi unit that needs a c-wire. I have read that I can connect the c-wire to the transformer (power stealing), but that is not recommended. I have 5 wires running to the old thermostat, but only Rh and W are connected. I think a good option would be to just replace the old transformer with a modern one. Why is it that I cannot find an HVAC transformer that has a dedicated common terminal? To me this makes more sense then adding a second transformer. Any recommendations?

Um, I don't know where you got the term "power stealing". What you describe as that, is exactly the normal way to do that thing, and the right way... unless you are aware of some capacity issue on the transformer (as is sometimes seen in...

Back in the olden days, thermostats were simple on/off devices that didn’t need their own continuous power supply. Modern thermostats with Wi-Fi and backlit display, by contrast, need a steady supply of juice.

The C wire, or “common wire” enables the continuous flow of 24 VAC power to the thermostat.

Technically speaking, power flows from the R (red) wire, but not continuously (not on its own, anyway). To make it continuous requires a common wire to complete the circuit. When the circuit is complete, 24V energy will flow continuously.

If you’re considering purchasing a smart thermostat, you’re probably thinking of doing the installation yourself. After all, if you’re able to change a light switch or receptacle, you’re skilled enough to install a smart thermostat – assuming your system already has a C wire.

If your system has a C-wire, it might be in use or just tucked away behind your current thermostat.

If your system doesn’t have a C-wire,...

I just took over some ownership and maintenance duties on this temple in Atlanta. In one of the buildings there is 9 package rooftop units. They are all Trane units. They all seem to be these YSC060A3 style (some are the 48 model ones, smaller ones). Full model number is YSC060A3RMA2T01B. Each one of these units are directly connected to a single Trane Zone Sensor BAYSENS019C, so no multiple zone sensors connected to one unit. Now these zone sensors work fine, but we would like to change them all out to more user friendly ones, mainly also we want more control over them by using the Wifi based ones.

Now when I took off the BAYSENS019C I noticed clearly this is not your normal thermostat wiring, it has the 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 labelled wires. Im like this is not a normal thermostat. After looking at manual noticed these dont operate like normal thermostats on those wires either, it uses mainly serial communication back to the control unit.

So then I went to the roof...

Installing a thermostat for your central air conditioning or heat pump system can be a do-it-yourself task if you are handy enough. It can also be pretty simple given that you have the right tools. But before reading this and following through, make sure that you view our disclaimer as we are not going to be held responsible if you damage your equipment or injure yourself. If you still feel like you have enough common sense to follow this guide and install a thermostat yourself and save money, then read on…

Determine What Type of System You Have First

The following thermostat replacement tutorial is covering a split system, single stage compressor, using a 1F86-344 White Rogers digital thermostat. No zones. No heat pump, although if you have a heat pump system following this tutorial should work also, as there are only two extra wires that you would have to hook up which would be ‘B’ (brown) and ‘O’ (orange).

In this article, I am going to explain the function and wiring of the most common home climate control thermostats. This information is designed to help you understand the function of the thermostat to assist you when installing a new one, or replacing or up-grading an old one. We will focus mainly on the basics of home heating / cooling thermostats, and first of all, I will explain the function of them.

The thermostat is the control device that provides a simple user interface with the internal workings of your homes climate control system. By the use of an adjustable set-point, the job of the thermostat is to turn on either the heating or cooling system to maintain the desired room temperature in the home, and to turn off the system when the desired temperature is achieved.

The most basic of systems (such as an older ‘heat only’ forced air / gas furnace with a standing pilot light) only need two wires for control. They connect to a two-wire thermostat (generally a...
