Comfortmaker Run Capacitor Location?

In a purely capacitive circuit the current will lead the voltage by 90 degrees. In a purely inductive circuit the current will lag the voltage by 90 degrees. Of course, there is always some resistance in any circuit, so whether inductive or capacitive, the lead / lag relationship between current and voltage will be somewhere between 0 and 90 degrees. I say all that to say this; the net effect of the difference in the capacitor is that it will change the angle of lead / lag between voltage and current in your motor.

Chances are that your motor is starting slower than it used to, but the change would be so small, you will not notice without an o-scope. There is a small chance that the electric motor may have a reduction in it's life-span, but it's probably negligible. Nothing will come of this that has an effect on the pump itself.

What are Start RUN Capacitors?
Motors used in HVAC such as the condensing fan motors or blower fan motors sometimes need help to get moving and to stay running at a steady pace, with no heavy up and down spikes. To do this HVAC units use what are called Start and RUN capacitors.

Not all motors will have a start or run capacitor some can start and run by themselves.

Capacitors in HVAC can be separate or can be in a single package. When they are separate they are simply called “Single” and when they are combined into one package they are called “Dual Round”.

Open the furnace access panel. Now I do not have a "Comfortmaker" brand.
I have a gas furnace "OLSEN" brand. But they work basically all the same way. The location of the button is different and different colors too.(black,red,white)
Now when you take the panel off inside you should see a small box about the size of a 1 pound block of butter and on the face of that should be a round shaft like button. Imprinted into the metal on the face is Auto and Man. The round shaft pushes in or pulls out a bit and it changes from one mode to the other. You want it on Auto, as manual means you are over riding the control to run just the fan. Do not disassemble by taking the cover off. It is just a simple (inny or outy) switch.

Warm sides are usually caused by the condenser fan which is underneath around back not running. If it's not running when the compressor runs it will cause the problem you describe. You will need to remove the cardboard backing on the back of the fridge to access the fan.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge.The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

When it was moved, was it laid down? If it was it should be stood upright for 24 hours before being plugged back in.

Summary: the run capacitor, located in the outside compressor unit, is the most common failure component in HVAC. Replacement can be a do-it-yourself (DIY), if you are careful.

Run capacitor replace?

Never replace parts unless you are sure or think you are sure they are bad or defective.

Before replacing the run capacitor, make sure you read, HVAC - Outside Compressor and Fan Not Starting or Running.


HVAC has 240, death, alternating current (AC) voltage.

Do not attempt any do-it-yourself (DIY) repairs on HVAC if you have never worked with or around high voltage.

Always, double and triple check that circuits are dead. This means using a voltmeter.

This weekend I had the displeasure of sleeping in a 85 degree house. Fortunately my home warranty company was able to locate a contractor that came out this morning to diagnose and repair the problem. They diagnosed the problem as a bad run capacity and dirty condenser coil. I was hoping that the community could tell me how these two problem actually relate to the problems that I was experiencing. Please understand I am not questioning the word of the technician I am only trying to understand how these two problems would contribute to the air not cooling properly. In fact, the air is now 21 degrees cooler as measured at a register.

The primary problem that I experience is that the air conditioner would run but the air was only cool. After two hours of continuous running it would cool the house to 81 degrees.
