Controlling 110v swamp cooler using Nest thermostat

1

I currently have an HVAC system that is connected to a Nest thermostat (2nd generation) and I'm planning to use the same Nest thermostat to control a 110 swamp cooler that is currently not connected.

Before dealing with the trouble to connect both systems to the same thermostat (maybe using switches/relays to shut down one system while the other is on) I want to know if it possible to control the swamp cooler using the Nest thermostat. I don't have too much electrical knowledge, but I've been doing some research and I think it is possible if I buy some additional things.

The swamp cooler has a 2-speed motor, therefore I would like the Nest thermostat to control both speeds using Y1 and Y2 terminals. As far as I know 2 stage thermostats will apply power from the R terminal to the Y2 if more cooling power is required at the same time power is applied from R terminal to Y1. I also want the water pump to work everytime the thermostat calls for cooling (for both speeds),...

Swamp coolers work ok until it reaches 94 degrees. at that point, they stop cooling as well, because the pump can not get enough water on the pads to keep them wet . Frequently asked questions about evaporative coolers how does an evaporative cooler work? evaporative coolers circulate water across pads or other media. After calling several hvac contractors to have our evaporative cooler fixed, we finally found aaa. they were courteous and helpful. our tech was paul, and he arrived. Hello, I am wanting to wire my swamp cooler into a new thermostat but need some help. I know very little about wiring and have gathered some information but would like experienced users to check my logic.

The swamp cooler has a 2-speed motor, therefore I would like the thermostat to control both speeds using Y1 and Y2 terminals. As far as I know 2 stage thermostats will apply power from the R terminal to the Y2 if more cooling power is required at the same time power is applied from R terminal to Y1. I also want the water pump to work every time the thermostat calls for cooling (for both speeds)

I have found that the Honeywell RC840T-120 might allow me to use the 24v thermostat with the 110v swamp cooler and using a SPDT relay I could connect Y1 and Y2 to the 2 terminals of the 2-speed motor. Honeywell RC840T-120 was created to connect line-voltage controlled heaters to 24v thermostats but I think it will also work with the swamp cooler. This device will be the...

3x RIB2401B Relays that work off 24VAC, which is what my Z-Wave thermostat signals with.. I just ran a 7 wire thermostat cable from my furnace to my swamp cooler to tie the signals in.. you only need 4 wires but I had to pull a new wire to thermostat because it needed 7 so I used the same spool

This was some excellent work! i can see clearly what you have now!

Note both thermostats have only an R terminal, not an RC and an RH as most thermostats have. These thermostats will not work as they have no RH and RC for the 2 transformers you have, you cant use the transformer downstairs in the furnace for the swamp cooler as it has its own as part of the control, if you sent the furnaces red hot leg of 24 volts the common side would not be from the same transformer thus would not work, we cant put both R's on the Red terminal at the Tstat

So to use 1 thermostat for both furnace and swamp cooler, using 2 transformers, 1 for the cooler on RC on the new thermostat and the other for the heater on RH on the new thermostat. RC is red cool, RH is red heat, from back in the day when TRANE was GE and used 2 transformers.

The R-Red 24v hot leg wire from the cooler will go to Tstats RC terminal as stated.

The green wire from the cooler is common / neutral leg of...

An evaporative cooler (AKA "Swamp" cooler) for those who aren't familiar are devices used in dry climates that basically suck dry air through a sponge like material saturated with water. Evaporation in turn cools the air which is then pumped in to the house to cool it. They use about 10% of the electricity of a traditional air conditioner.

The problem: there are no commercial controllers that intelligently juggle both the evap system and the furnace at the same time.

So, when you feel cold you turn on the heat. As it starts to heat up the evap cooler you forgot to switch OFF (Or perhaps more accuratley your wife ) turns on to try and cool it down.... and they both go to town battling each other until you wake up in the middle of the night to find out it is either freezing or muggy and hot as hell. (DAMHIK).

Annnyyyyway...... LOL, this sounds like a great Arduino project.

The cooler is directly controlled via 120V AC and has Fan High, Fan Low and Pump...

Change

It wasn't trendy, funny, nor was it coined on Twitter, but we thought change told a real story about how our users defined 2010. Unlike in 2008, change was no longer a campaign slogan. But, the term still held a lot of weight. Here's an excerpt from our Word of the Year announcement in 2010:

The national debate can arguably be summarized by the question: In the past two years, has there been enough change? Has there been too much? Meanwhile, many Americans continue to face change in their homes, bank accounts and jobs. Only time will tell if the latest wave of change Americans voted for in the midterm elections will result in a negative or positive...
