Q 1: Are your LEDs dimmable?

A: As a rule yes they are. There are some individual exceptions.

Q 2: Do I need to change my fittings, drivers or anything else to install dimmable LEDs?

A: Fittings should not have to be changed. Our bulbs have the same or very similar dimensions to the incandescent or halogen bulbs you may be replacing and have the same base such as GU10.

In the case of low voltage lamps such as MR16 spotlights, it is unfortunately necessary to change the transformer for a LED compatible driver. This is due to the lower power consumption of the LEDs, and their requirement to run on DC.

Another consideration is the dimmer switch. LED dimmable bulbs require a trailing edge dimmer switch.

Dimming LEDs may be getting easier and easier, but problems still can –– and often do –– surface when you try to run LED lamps on dimmer controls.

But why?

Unfortunately, there's no easy answer. Diagnosing LED dimming issues isn't all that unlike diagnosing a sickness.

You start by checking vitals before looking at the symptoms of the issue.

In a dimming scenario, the vital check is pretty simple:

Are these lamps in fact dimmable? Are they compatible with the controls they're being paired with? And are those controls still in working condition, or have they surpassed their life rating?

Bryan, Arduino has millis() that returns unsigned long milliseconds since startup.

That is enough to cover intervals up to 49.7... days.

It's far easier to code to millis than hour, minute, whatever. If you want a led to change from 0 to full in 256 steps in 60 seconds then each step is at ( 60000UL x unsigned long step# / 256UL, note the multiply before the divide ). I get 23.47... millis per step up for a 60 second ramp-up.

If exact time isn't necessary then perhaps go 24ms each step?

I expect you're running the led on PWM to control brightness? Up the analogWrite at each step?

With millis you can tell how long two times are apart up to the size of the variables you keep time in. For you for now, that's 49.7 days using unsigned longs.

Some LED lights are not dimmable under any circumstances. This is sometimes mentioned in fine print on the box. But if nothing is mentioned about dimming on the box, you should assume the light isn't dimmable.

If dimming is mentioned as a feature of the light, then there are often qualifications. The light is likely to only be compatible with particular types of dimmers. Often on the box, this is just an asterisk, but on the web sites for the reputable manufacturers you can find detailed tables about actual compatibility with specific dimmers and transformers (for the case of low voltage lights).

Resistive Dimming

Resistive dimming has become a standard way of dimming halogen lighting and it works by reducing the voltage allowed to the bulb with a variable resistor.

A resistive dimmer switch is easy to install because it is simply wired between the mains (240V) power and the bulb, however whilst the lighting is dimmed the voltage resistance is converted to heat and is not considered energy efficient.

If you're shopping for LEDs, there are many options to choose from -- and dimmer compatibility only complicates matters.

Even if you pick the proper color temperature, lumens rating and a desired beam angle, you might run into another snag: dimmers. In many cases, your existing incandescent dimmers won't play nicely with newer LED bulbs. Unlike incandescents, all of which dim indiscriminately, LEDs either dim or they don't.

Hums, flickering and other dimming problems

With incandescent bulbs, dimming is simple, since the brightness of a the bulb is directly related to the voltage applied. Adjust the voltage applied by raising or lowering the dimmer and the brightness of the bulb will change accordingly.

The same isn't always true with LEDs, however. If you use an LED bulb with an incandescent dimmer switch, you may find that the bulb:

After much researching and trying various things I have finally found a solution to fix my flickering LED light on dimmer issue which may be of use to others experiencing similar issues. In the end the solution for me was simple and cheap and seems to be very effective. I simply added a $2 1000uF capacitor to the DC side of the LED driver.

However, I believe that the issue LED light flicker might be caused by different things in different deployments. Causes can relate to different lights, drivers, dimmers, mains voltage situations etc. For this reason, I will outline the background to my situation to give all the information that might be useful to people on this thread.

The specifics of my situation :-

There’ve been some interesting developments in the world of LED replacement bulbs for incandescent lighting. Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has introduced a series of four LED bulbs under its Great Value house brand. The bulbs are made under private label by TCP and manufactured in China. They come in two levels of brightness: an 800lm 60W equivalent and an 470lm 40W equivalent, with each bulb available as either dimmable or non-dimmable. The 800lm dimmable costs $9.88; The non-dimmable version is $8.88.

This review looks at just the 60W-equivalent 800lm versions and mostly just the dimmable version.

First, a look at the bulb’s specs: The Walmart dimmable 800lm (60W-equivalent) bulb’s package says it consumes 11W of power. On the bulb’s base in fine print it says it consumes 10.5W; My Kill A Watt meter says it uses 9.3W. Why the large swing in claimed vs. actual? Don’t know.
