Replacing an electric water heater requires a permit in most areas. This ensures that both the electrical and plumbing connections are done properly and safely and meet the local code requirements. Here we will look at the basic electrical requirements only. If you're replacing an existing electric unit, now is the time to make sure the original water heater wiring is up to snuff.

Turn Off the Power

Before you do any investigating or touching of water heater wiring or electrical connections, turn off the power to the circuit that supplies the water heater.

In most cases, the circuit is served by a 30-amp, double-pole breaker. Switch off the appropriate breaker in the breaker box, then use an electrical tester to be sure that the circuit is off by testing at the water heater.

Electrical Connections

The electrical connection for a water heater is made at a built-in junction box on the top of the water heater tank. This is enclosed by a cover...

I’ve been getting lots of questions lately about how to wire an electric water heater. I’m guessing this is because a lot of you are switching your water heater from gas to electric due to the extremely high natural gas prices. Some people have also asked how to wire an electric hot water heater. I’ve always gotten a kick out of this. In my opinion, you do not heat hot water; you heat cold water. Perhaps is should be called a cold water heater. At any rate, call it what you will, I think we all understand what it is.

Unfortunately, I do not have an electric water heater in my home and I haven’t installed one in a while either. So. I had to “borrow” some pictures from the internet. I found a site with all of the images that I need. The article is entitled Chicago new condo water heater inspection.

This article is going to assume that your electric water heater is 240 volts and this is a residential application.

You need to install a 10/2 NM cable (romex) with...

This example shows Tankless with terminal connections for 3 wires
Larger image Example shows 3 wires connected inside tankless
Electricity supplied by 3 separate wires from 3 breakers
Total electric consumption for typical tankless electric is 96 to 120 amps.

Before installing tankless electric, look at main breaker on household service panel.
If main breaker is 150 amps, then it is max-ed out carrying this tankless load.
Breakers are rated safe maximum at 80%
Main breaker 150 amps x 80% = 120amps safe maximum

Tankless electric water heaters consume large amount of electricity
This is because electric elements cannot heat water as fast as natural gas or propane gas.
Tankless electric water heater will cost more to operate than ordinary tank-type electric water heater.
This is because so much energy is wasted trying to heat water as it passes quickly in pipe.

To reduce energy consumption, add a tempering tank to preheat...

Frequently Asked Questions About Water Heaters

WATER HEATER BASICS

Q. What Types of Water Heater are Available?

A. There are essentially two types of water heaters: Tank type water heaters and Tankless units. Tank type water heaters can be heated by electric elements, a gas burner or a heat exchanger from a furnace or solar collector. Tankless water heaters do not have any stored volume of water. These units heat the water as it is being used. However, because they are “instantaneous” water heaters, they require an extremely high amount of power to heat the water to a desired temperature.

Tank Type

The tank type water heaters can be powered four ways: gas fired, oil fired, electric powered, and external source heated:

Tankless

The tankless water heater does not have a sacrificial anode rod but it will be subject to the erosive forces of water flowing through a small copper pipe. A pressure and temperature relief valve is...

Check electrical panel to be sure that circuit breaker is in the "On" position (not in tripped or off) or fuses (if used) are installed securely and not "blown". Reset circuit breaker to "On" or replace any blown fuse(s) and wait 30 - 60 minutes for the water to warm. If water has remained cool, continue troubleshooting steps below.

2

Shut off the power. Most water heaters are supplied by voltages that can cause shock, burns and even death should an energized conductor come in contact with the body. Shut off power in the electrical panel by removing fuses or by moving the handle of a switch or circuit breaker dedicated to the water heater to the Off position. Completely remove and "pocket" the fuses or otherwise secure or lock the panel and place a note on the cover to alert everyone that work is being performed on the water heater circuit. This will prevent the accidental energizing of the circuit while you are working on it.

Common problem with electric water heater installation is turning the power on before the tank is completely full of water. After the plumbing connections are complete, but before connecting electric power, open a hot water faucet all the way until the "hot" water runs FULL STREAM for three minutes. When first opened, you may only get air out of the faucet, then spurts of water. Wait until the water runs full and let the water run full for three minutes. If the tank is not completely full when power is turned on, the upper heating element will burn out and you'll have no hot water (until the upper element is replaced). Note - You will also need a circuit tester or volt meter to check for electric power.
