Extend Roof for Patio Cover

I agree with Ed Beal. But yes, there are 2 ways to do this & they're equal in strength, for what's planning to be done. However, get a Permit from the Building Dept., so they can approve or correct the design, fasteners & supporting post(s) dimensions & footings. Plus, they can record that the patio was converted to a porch.

1st way is to do ledgers on both fasciae into structural members. Typically you'd pre-build the new structure so the short rafters are end screwed or nailed through the blue-line's ledger & the long lower beam & top ledger are through the side ledger (rafter). Also, use joist hanger type connectors to ensure nothing can pull away from each other.

2nd way is really the proper way & is likely what the one contractor was talking about. You'd remove both fasciae & screw or nail directly into the structure. For the slope side this is much less important. But, the blue-line top would have the new rafters cantilevered or sistered onto the home's existing...

To stand up the frame without help, it was necessary to attach prop sticks; that is, I used a single framing nail to attach a 10-foot long 2”x6” board (I used my joists) to the outside of the frame, one board length away from the bottom of the frame, on each side. These two boards would rotate on their nail, their end holding up the frame as I lifted, while their other end would be on the ground, preventing the frame from going back down.

Then, in the middle, I attached a 10-foot board to the center post and lifted it from the very end, the leverage cutting the strength needed to lift the frame in half. As I lifted the frame I walked in toward it, and had the frame standing in its post holes without having to strain myself. Next I attached the joists to the left and right sides, and with the corners secure I was able to remove the prop sticks and center lifting board and install the rest of the...

Source: NicozDiamond offers insurance cover for small business | The Herald October 9, 2017

Recent years have seen the rise of small indigenous businesses in Zimbabwe. Most of these businesses are usually managed and run by the owners leading to little separation between the two. Furthermore, most of these entities are characterised by low levels of capital, few employees, a few key assets and less complexity in their operations. These companies are still in the growth stage focusing on expanding their business operations. Any interruption in the operations or loss of key assets can have a severe impact on ability to retain and acquire new clients. In extreme situations loss of an asset can lead to total company collapse as capital will be low. Clearly for small and up-starting companies risks are inherently higher as they threaten business continuity. Insurance cover is one of the best ways of safeguarding business stability. Below are some of the more common insurance...

Patio Cover Roofing Designs

If you read this blog regularly, you’ve likely seen our breakdown of patio cover materials. But when you’re trying to find the best design for your patio cover, there are many other factors to consider. This article digs deeper into patio cover design features.

Some patio covers are anchored to the side of a home, while others are freestanding structures. Here’s a closer look at both options.

A freestanding patio cover is completely independent of your home. It’s often anchored to your patio with four posts, with one attaching to each corner of the covering. However, freestanding patio covers can be anchored by as few as two posts, or even one central post (if the roof slopes outward like an umbrella).

Freestanding patio covers provide you with greater freedom of design than other types of patio covers. Since the patio cover isn’t anchored to your home, it doesn’t have to match he style displayed on your...

These patio cover plans describe how I built my own patio cover. There are many ways to build a patio cover; every situation is different. These plans are intended to provide you with some useful insight, while you are designing and building a patio cover for your own home.

Assumptions and Considerations

Before building this patio cover, it is assumed that you already have a patio slab or deck that you are wanting to cover. Our house came with a 10' x 10' patio slab. We extended ours to make it approximately 10' x 20'.

These patio cover plans assume that the existing structure is capable of supporting a new patio cover roof in the manner described below. If you have any doubts, you should consult a structural engineer.

Special note: These plans are not intended to replace engineered working drawings. Local building codes can vary significantly among the regions. Your local building code should determine the actual sizes of...

The page says 16', but the video says they are 4'. Does this come as 4-4' sections when I choose

by LeftCoaster – August 20, 2015

Correct. These awning covers by 'Awning Pro-Tech' are multiple pieces measuring a little over 4ft. long. The covers when installed are designed to overlap each other with enough pieces to cover a patio awning length a particular kit is assembled for. The 16 foot kit has 4 pieces.

Re: Tying A Patio Roof Into Existing House.

I think I would set the frame work that the rafters will sit on, then set up four of the common rafters and run the ridge board to where it will sit on the house(or pull a string level across) to find the point at which the ridge meets the roof. From that point all the way to the lower end(fascias) you will need to lay a 2x(size depends on your rafter framing size) on each side that extends from the NEW ridge board to the bottom of the valleys, fasten it thru the roof and into the existing structures roof rafters or trusses.

Those 2x's create the "bottom" of your new valley, and your jack rafters on the porch roof will extend from that up to your new ridge board.

You could cut the new ridge board into the existing roof and tie it into the house rafters or trusses, but I am not sure that is necessary.

I said all of that to say this: I am no framer....
