Furnace keeps kicking off and on

1

That's what it's supposed to do. It heats until a "high" cut-out temp, and rests until a "low" cut-in temp. If it's colder outside, that will chill down your house much faster, it will hit the "cut-in" threshold much sooner, and cycle more often. So if it started doing this during the cold snap, that's why.

If the heater is working at its limits due to the cold snap, it will barely turn off before it starts up again. The fix is a bigger heater, or temporarily running additional heaters e.g. electric.

In some thermostats there is an adjustment for the "spread" between cut-in and cut-out. You could try increasing that.

Also, thermostats are sometimes in a bad location: either too close to the heater, or blasted by a hot-air vent or convection. They think the house has warmed up, so they cut out, which causes rapid cycling. That can be handled by moving furniture, closing or redirecting vents, putting a cover or shield around the thermostat (a piece of paper will...

My gas furnace kicks on then shuts off. What do I do now?

If it has turned on and off a couple times and goes into a lockout mode, you have to turn the furnace off and back on to be able to restart it again.

That only starts the next round.

Check the air filter. If it can’t breathe, it won’t run.

The filter is cleaner than anything else in the basement.

The furnace will verify the pressure switch, limit switch and roll out switch are all closed before turning on the igniter on a gas furnace. If any of them are stuck in the wrong position, the furnace won’t do anything past turning on the inducer.

I could try to flip those switches back manually.

For things like the limit switch and pressure switch, the furnace will try to start up again in a few minutes. For a roll out switch, though, it won’t restart due to safety concerns.

Yeah, a gas furnace doing its job too well.

For most furnaces, the inducer motor starts up...

Got a fickle furnace that frequently turns on and off? It’s an annoying problem during cold Northern California winters.

We call this problem “short cycling”, and you should take it seriously because it can:

Cause a premature furnace breakdown: Constantly turning on and off puts extra strain on the furnace. This leads to a premature breakdown with expensive repair costs. Increase your energy bills: Imagine turning your car on and off for every mile you drive. That’s a wasteful way to drive. Similarly, your furnace needs time to run to work efficiently.

So what’s causing this issue?

Short cycling: 3 common causes

There are 3 common reasons why a furnace keeps turning on and off:

1) Dirty air filter

This is most common cause of short cycling. A dirty air filter restricts air from getting into your furnace. That’s no good. Your furnace’s heat exchanger needs that air blowing over it or it overheats, causing the furnace to shut...

Usually this is from a dirty or tarnished flame sensor probe or hot surface igniter/sensor. You can clean the flame sensor with fine steel wool until you can replace it.

It also happens a lot with intermittent pilot systems when the pilot is weak and gets buffeted around by the burner flame draft. It shuts down the burner then goes through pilot ignition repeatedly.

It could be weak draft from a worn draft inducer motor, obstruction in the chimney, or partial obstruction to the tube going to the pressure switch, or a weak pressure switch.

Or it could just be a defective self resetting limit switch.

In one case I found a fusible rollout switch acting like a self resetting switch. After it cooled off it would make the connection again and the module would show off on limit. That was a tough one to...

Just bought travel trailer. When heat turned on it will run about 5 min then cut off for about 5 min then back on and off. Heat is set on 90 to try to make run nonstop but continues to do the same is this ordinary?

ANSWER: Greetings Fred thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

What you are experiencing with your RV FurnaceCACHEBUSTER"> is not normal. RV Furnaces are designed to shut off once the proper inside temperature is reached. Once the temperature falls below the thermostat setting, the furnace is designed to cycle back on. Since your furnace is never reaching the proper inside temperature and just cycles on and off that means that it is not functioning properly.

Since you do not tell me what make or model RV Furnace you have, I can only outline common problems found in RV furnaces that could be causing your furnace to malfunction.

When your furnace is working properly, it automatically cycles on when it senses that the air is too cold. When the temperature in your Arlington, VA home or business is comfortable, the heating system shuts itself off in response. The process is so automatic that you probably don’t give it much thought. However, it could indicate a serious problem when your furnace keeps turning on and off randomly throughout the day. Fortunately, there are some troubleshooting tips you can try on your own before placing a call to Brennan’s Heating & Air Conditioning for repairs.

Diagnosing the Problem

When a furnace keeps turning on and off, it is usually due to short cycling. This is the term used to describe problems originating from within the heating system. If short cycling is not promptly diagnosed and corrected, it could cause permanent damage to your heating unit and higher utility bills. The average heating system cycles on and off three to six times every hour. To...

Common Causes for Short-Cycling

Short-cycling, as it’s called in the trade, means your furnace is trying to tell you something. Your furnace might be turning on and off because:

The thermostat is malfunctioning – First things first: check your thermostat to make sure it’s set correctly. The air filters are dirty and need to be changed – When warmed air can’t get through a filter, it heads right back up into the furnace. This makes your furnace think your house is nice and cozy, so it shuts off. When the thermostat tells it that the temperature has gone down, the furnace kicks on again and the cycle repeats. In addition to not heating your home correctly, this can also cause stress cracks on the furnace’s...

Short Cycling… Have you heard this term before? Your air conditioner or even furnace can suffer from a short cycling issue, but it is something that can be fixed, and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Symptoms

My AC or furnace keeps turning on and off repeatedlyMy AC or furnace seems to be running more frequently than usualI haven’t changed my temperature in my house, but my AC or furnace is still trying to turn on and off to fulfil a demand I haven’t made

Diagnosis

Your system could be short cycling. When a system short cycles, it can kick on and off repeatedly, sometimes multiple times per hour or in extreme circumstances, multiple times per minute. This happens when your system is asked to produce a certain temperature (whether hot or cold), and the requirements have not been met, but your system turns off as if it “thinks” it met the requirement.

Let’s say you set your thermostat at 70 degrees, and it’s currently 65 in your home. Your thermostat...

If your furnace keeps turning on and off repeatedly, it can be stressful at best, and cold or downright uncomfortable at worst. First, it is important to realize that a furnace which is “short-cycling,” as we call it in the business, probably means that its safety features are working properly, so breathe a sigh of relief. In fact, in all likelihood, that’s why the furnace keeps turning on and off – it turns on normally, then for some reason, it thinks that an unsafe condition exists, and turns itself off again as a safety precaution. But let’s not wait for those safety features to fail too…you definitely want to find the source of the problem. The average furnace cycles on and off three to six times every hour. When a furnace turns on and off for very short periods of time, it’s called short cycling. Short cycling is a symptom of a larger problem, and if it’s not noticed and then corrected right away, it can cause permanent damage to your furnace, not to mention lead to higher utility bills. Common causes of short cycling:

Dirty Air Filter

This is the most common cause and the most easily fixed. Warm air can’t pass through a dirty filter. Since it has nowhere else to go, it backs up within the unit. This sends the incorrect message to your furnace so your furnace shuts off. When your home becomes cold a short time later, your furnace starts up again. To help keep your furnace from constantly turning on and off, make sure that you change the air filter at the start of each new season and check it monthly.

If the Warrington home’s furnace turns on and then a short time later shuts off, this is known as short cycling. Not only is short cycling hard on your equipment, but it also greatly reduces the efficiency of your furnace. Below, we describe what you should do if your furnace is short cycling.

Causes of Short Cycling

There are a number of reasons that your furnace might be short cycling. Here are just a few of them:

Furnace is too big – In this case, your furnace will heat your home very quickly and then shut off. As your home cools again, the furnace will turn on and heat up your home once again. Having a properly sized furnace is critical to your home’s comfort and efficiency. Clogged air filter – This is by far the most common cause of short cycling. When your air filter clogs, it restricts air from getting into your furnace. As your furnace heats up the heat exchanger, air is supposed to blow over the exchanger to carry the heat into your home. Without that...

One of the most annoying things your furnace can do is to constantly keep turning on and off. This on-off cycling keeps your Yardley home from heating up properly. This action – called short cycling – also requires more electricity and drives up utility bills.

Short cycling is caused by an overheated furnace, which triggers safety mechanisms and shuts down the furnace. After a brief interval and cooling down, the furnace starts up again the cycle keeps repeating itself. Not only is it an annoyance, it can also signal more serious problems. A leaking heat exchanger can cause a furnace to overheat – and produce deadly carbon monoxide gas.

If a furnace is working too hard and overheating, it is usually because of airflow in and out. Your home’s ventilation system needs to be clear of dirt, dust, and debris. The more blockage in your ductwork and vents, the more friction is created, slowing down airflow and ultimately ending with an overworked furnace that continues to...
