Gas Pilots going out

1

A healthy home pulls in air, circulates it, and releases it. You have negative pressure when you are releasing more air than you are pulling in. This could be caused by a blocked intake or an over-working exhaust system. The most common, for a stove, would be a vent hood pulling too much air from your home than it can pull in to keep the fire going (see figure 1 above.) However, since this is happening throughout the house, it could be multiple fans that are leading to the overall problem. The best way to test this, no joke, is to open a window near one of the fires and see if it can stay lit then. If it can, then it is negative air pressure within the home. If it goes out, you might be having issues with your gas line.. possibly a partially closed valve somewhere or issues further down with your meter even.

This is most common with wood fires as they draw a lot of air to keep going, but it's the same concept for any fire. Try opening a window and see where that gets...

Nine times out of ten, the pilot orifice just needs cleaning.

It is likely that the orifice in the pilot head has collected enough sediment from the gas to reduce the size of the flame at the thermocouple (or electronic sensor in an electronic ignition unit). If the thermocouple doesn't get enough heat, the electromagnet inside the valve won't be strong enough to hold the pilot gas open. The coil in the valve releases and the pilot goes out.

A good gas technician should be able to clean your pilot orifice and take a measurement of the voltage output of the thermocouple (if you have an electronic ignition unit, the sensor must be completely engulfed in flame, so a visual check is necessary). It is also possible that the thermocouple is getting old and isn't producing as much voltage anymore.

If the thermocouple is putting out enough voltage (15-20 millivolts is typical), it's possible that the electromagnet in the valve is going bad.

With an accurate...

If you, indeed, have a pilot to light your oven, if you watch it when you turn up the thermostat, (temp. control knob), the flame will actually, (or should), increase in size, so that it engulfs the thermocouple, which will be situated a short distance away from the area that the pilot normally runs in. This action heats the thermocouple until it sends an electric current of a specific size to the oven safety valve, which then should open and allow gas to flow into the burner and light when it hits the flame of the pilot. If you have this sort of a system, then your range is very old, (I know this because I have one of the same general age), and it's possible that the controls are going bad. It could be in the temp. control, (thermostat), or the oven safety valve, or could be the pilot and cage area where it burns, need to be cleaned properly.
If it's a glow ignition system on a newer range, then it's most likely the igniter going bad.

Replace the thermocouple

Thermocouple

A thermocouple senses the heat of the pilot and allows gas to flow to the burner. A bad thermocouple will shut off gas to both the pilot and the burner so the pilot light won’t stay lit.

Photo 1: Unscrew the nuts

Turn off the control valve and the shutoff. Remove the burner access covers and unscrew the nuts on the gas, pilot and thermocouple lines.

Shutoff valve

Be sure to turn the shutoff valve to the off position, as in this photo, before beginning work on the thermocouple.

Photo 2: Remove the assembly

Pull out the burner assembly. Pull out the old thermocouple. Buy a new one that matches the old one in size and length.

Photo 3: New thermocouple

Install the new thermocouple exactly like the old, slide the burner assembly back in and reattach the three lines to the control valve.

Gas hot water heater troubleshooting: Pilot light won't light or stay lit.

Solution and how to repair:

Check is there a gas at all or is the gas pressure low, and if there is a problem with the gas supply, call the utility company.

If there is an air in gas line, bleed the air from the gas line (should be done by certified technician).

When attempting to light pilot, be sure that the pilot light button is fully depressed. Check is the pilot electrode sparking to pilot and is piezo igniter working properly.

There might be also a defective magnet in combination thermostat-gas valve, replace it if necessary.

If the pilot tube or orifice is clogged, clean it. If thermocouple connection is loose with gas valve or in pilot light assembly bracket, tighten it with your finger and 1/4 turn with the wrench, it might need just a simple adjustment.

Thermocouple has to be properly secured and in contact with the pilot flame. If it is broken, replace...

Tired of your gas furnace pilot light going out? It’s frustrating, especially in the frigid Kansas City area winters.

Here are a few common causes of this problem and how to fix them.

Problems with the thermocouple

The thermocouple is the copper rod you see the pilot flame hitting. It’s a safety device that controls a small valve to shut off gas going to the pilot light if the flame goes out.

If it didn’t shut the gas valve, all that gas could get into your home. If it was ignited, it’d cause an explosion.

So, the thermocouple is like a lifeguard, standing watch until something goes wrong.

There are a few problems related to the thermocouple that can cause the pilot light to go out:

Malfunction- If your thermocouple is broken, it will shut the valve even if the pilot light was working fine. And you won’t be able to open the valve manually, either. A professional HVAC contractor needs to replace the thermocouple if that’s the case....

In the weeks following the execution of Clayton Lockett, the Oklahoma death row inmate whose botched lethal injection triggered a statewide moratorium on executions, lawmakers there began rethinking their approach to capital punishment. Among the people they called on to help was Michael Copeland.

Copeland is a criminal justice professor at East Central University, a public school with about 6,000 students in Ada, Okla. From 2010 to 2013, he was the director of the anti-fraud unit at the Oklahoma Insurance Department. Before that, he was an assistant attorney general for the Republic of Palau, a small island nation in the Pacific Ocean. Copeland is not a doctor. He has no medical training. But what he does have is a close relationship with Oklahoma legislators, some of whom he’s known for years. And they often ask Copeland to conduct research and gather data that could help shape bills. He’s worked with legislators on reducing the number of uninsured motorists, for example,...

By Stephen Sherman, Aug. 2001. Updated July 8, 2013.

They fought in canvas and wood biplanes that could barely fly 100 MPH. Men like von Richthofen, Rickenbacker, Bishop, Guynemer, Mannock, Ball, who flew airplanes with names like Spad, Fokker, Albatros, Nieuport, and Sopwith Camel. High above the trenches they fought heroic battles with these primitive weapons.

In this era, the top speeds were about 100 MPH. When the pilots ventured ten miles over the enemy lines, that was a notable event. The pilots carried no parachutes. The airplanes were made of wood and canvas; when they caught on fire, it spread quickly, and spelled certain death for the occupants.

The press and public, desperate for propaganda heroes amongst the waste and useless battles of the trenches, idolized the young heroes.

Gas is almost always cheaper than electricity. Your situation might be different depending upon local and current prices, though. To do an accurate comparison, you'll need to check your bills to find the rates for electric and gas that you're paying to your particular providers. There's no way around this; you can't get meaningful results if you skip that step.

Also, if you don't already have gas service, then signing up for it means that you'll pay ~$12/mo. or so to the gas company for the privilege of being their customer. You're also looking at the cost of having the gas lines run if your home doesn't already have them. These things can quickly erase the savings of gas appliances over electric in many to most...

What does it really mean to become a knight? Do you get a sword and a squire to boss around? Inquiring minds want to know, so we did a bit of research. Here are the answers to some of your most pressing knighthood-related questions.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A KNIGHTHOOD?

Since 1917, the British government has been awarding notable citizens with spots in the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, which just recently welcomed Beatle Ringo Starr into its ranks. Although the Order, which was established by King George V, was originally meant to honor top-notch civilian and military behavior in wartime, it quickly expanded to include peacetime achievements as well.

This is a great question which gets asked all the time regarding gas fireplaces and gas inserts. The short answer is that it really depends on individual and what they are trying accomplish by either leaving it on or turning it off. There are functional reasons for asking the question, such as “will it hurt my fireplace if I do or don’t turn it off”, and then there are monetary reasons. It depends on what you want to know.

Here is some basic information about leaving the pilot on or off…

Pilot OFF:

No gas is being wasted so you are conserving energy and saving money! No heat is being generated by the pilot so the glass door on your fireplace will not be warm to the touch. Just one less thing to worry about when it is HOT out. With the pilot off, there are still trace amounts of gas molecules in the burner and pilot tubes of your fireplace. The gas companies add a chemical called Mercaptan to the gas which gives it that lovely odor we all know. Spiders are...
