GFCI receptacle and 3-way switches

–Check local regulations for restrictions and permit requirements before beginning electrical work–

Three-way switches allow for controlling a light fixture from two separate locations, these are usually used at the top and bottom of a flight of stairs or at two different entrances to a room. On this page are several wiring diagrams that can be used to map 3 way lighting circuits depending on the location of the source with relation to the lights. Included is a diagram for a 3 way dimmer and an arrangement to control a receptacle from two locations. For more information about these circuits and troubleshooting tips check below.

Source at First Switch and Light at the End

In this diagram the electrical source is at the first switch and the light is located at the end of the circuit. Three-wire cable runs between the switches and 2-wire cable runs to the light. The black and red wires between SW1 and SW2 are connected to the traveler terminals. The hot source is...

Toggle Switch 120vac 15A 3 Way (GFCI) Receptacle

PI manufacturing's toggle switches are designed for trouble-free mounting and wiring. The versatile switches can be either wired through the back or to the side based on the customer's preference. The back stabbing process is simply pushing the wire to create contact, however the side will provide for a more secure wire contact, in exchange for the effort expended for the side wiring process. These switches are of residential grade, still providing the standard 15A 120V found universally. The toggle switch functions decisively as the customer desires.

Ron Cowgill shows you how to install a regular light switch, a three way switch, a dimmer switch, a receptacle and GFCI receptacle.

If you are a bit intimidated by electrical projects around your house, you don’t have to be. We’ll share a few tips with you today on how to change an outlet and keep it very simple. The first thing we want to talk about is an outlet. A standard outlet around your house that looks just like this. Before you go pulling this out of the wall, the first thing you want to do is go turn the circuit breaker off for that outlet or switch that you are going to replace. A couple of tools that you will want to use to change those outlets and switches around your house, the first is wire strippers and you will notice that there are several notches in here based on the wire size that you are working with. When you put the notch around the wire and tug and that insulation will come off exposing the wire you are working with....

Determine which devices are not connected to GFCI.

Some devices should not be connected to GFCI receptacles because of the possibility for "nuisance tripping"; for example, refrigerators, fluorescent lights, laser printers, garbage disposals, trash compactors, dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers, home heating and cooling systems, artesian well and driven point jet type pumps, microwave ovens and freezers are some of the more commons items.

For switches: Label the wires with some sort of identifying mark on masking tape wrapped around each wire. Use the same mark for each wire connected to the same terminal screw of the device Determine the type of switch you have. A single-pole switch (one switch controls the light fixture(s)) will have two screws and be marked "ON" and "OFF" if a toggle type, a 3-way switch (two switches control the light fixture(s), typically at each end of a stairwell) will have three screws, one of which is black, and a 4-way switch (three switches...

Cooper 7503w is a 3-way switch.

It sounds like you purchased correct switch.

Remember, fixya answers questions about products. We don't sell Cooper wiring devices.

You have a continuity tester which is excellent, because electricians test, they don't guess.
Hopefully you have a voltage tester for testing steps shown below images.
Notice that new switch has 1 dark screw and 2 brass screws.
Dark screw is 'common.'
Brass screws are 'travelers.'
Screws are color-coded so electricians know where to connect wires

If your switch is a 4-way, it will have 4 screws: Notice switch located in middle of 3-way switches has 4 screws.

If old switch is 4-way, then each time switch is flipped, it will reverse travelers on either side of device.
The same is true with a 3-way switch. Each time switch is flipped, the travelers are reversed.
So a 4-way switch can be used as a 3-way switch, so old switch might be 4-way...

Hello. I'm having a bit of a difficult time diagnosing what seems like a simple enough problem.

First off, I've been in the process of replacing 2-wire, non-grounding receptacles with those that are 3-wire, grounding-type in my late 1940's home. Of course, according to the NEC, I can only replace a 2-wire receptacle with a grounding type if it's protected by a GFCI. OK. So I installed a GFCI receptacle right at the beginning of the circuit. Now, when I turn on my two wall sconces above my fireplace (which are downstream of the GFCI), both controlled by a pair of 3-way backlit switches, the GFCI immediately trips. If, however, I remove the light bulbs from both sconces, the GFCI does not trip when I operate the switches. I'm absolutely confident that the GFCI receptacle is installed correctly with the hot and neutral wires (for both the line and load) in the proper location.

(Also something interesting... With the power on at the fusebox, and the GFCI on and working,...
