Learn how to install exterior shutters with this how-to video from Lowe's. An easy way to enhance your curb appeal is by installing shutters on your home.

Choosing the right shutters for your home is an important first step. Black raised panel vinyl shutters offer a simple, stylish look for most homes. Make sure you choose the right size shutters for your windows. Generally, shutters should match the height of the window or door you are embellishing.

Hold the shutter next to the window in the spot that looks best and push a pencil through the holes to mark where to position your screws. Use the pencil marks on your house as a guide for drilling pilot holes for your screws. Then use a drill to secure the shutter to your house with screws.

Enjoy the new look of your home, thanks to this easy DIY shutters project from Lowe's.

Shutter-Loks (sometimes spelled "shutter locks" and often referred to as easy-loks, shutter plugs, plastic nails, or reverse barbed button locks) are designed for a permanent shutter installation. However, it is still possible to remove decorative exterior vinyl shutters when doing maintenance (such as exterior painting or installing new siding) on your home. You can remove the window shutters, but installing them again will require you to purchase new Shutter-Loks. Keep this in mind before you take them down, because Shutter-Loks generally cannot be found in local stores. Do not attempt to pull the Shutter-Lok out of the wall, as you will most likely damage the surface of your exterior vinyl shutters. To remove the exterior decorative shutters, you will need the following: A small chisel with a sharpened edge A hammer Silicone or caulking compound A diagonal cutter An electric drill with a 1/4" drill bit Turn the chisel so the sharp edge is facing away from the surface of the house...

Exterior Shutters Prices

The purpose of exterior shutters is twofold: to enhance the beauty of a home and to provide it with added protection. Outdoor shutters come in a variety of materials and styles, each with distinct advantages. In this buying guide you'll learn more about the types of exterior shutters and how much you can expect to pay for them.

Types of Exterior Shutters

Exterior house shutters can be divided in three main ways: whether they're fixed or operable, the type of material they're made from, and the style of the shutter. Below is a brief breakdown of the different shutter types.

Fixed vs. Operable

Fixed shutters, which do not open or close but are attached to the home exterior, have a strictly decorative purpose. Operable shutters, on the other hand, are equipped with hinges that allow them to close securely over a window, providing security from thieves as well as protection from the elements.

Many homeowners simply want to have an approximate cost, so that they can better budget for their own shutter installation expenses. While there is no magic number, a good idea is to estimate the average cost, which is between $1,304 and $2,006 for a traditional home.

“Operable Louvered Shutters”, louvers that are regulated by a tilt rod began to be manufactured around 1830-1840. Before this the louvers were fixed in an open position.

With the advent of the exterior Storm Window in the later 1800’s, shutters were sometimes removed and stored away before the cold months and wooden storm windows would be installed. Removal was easy – all you needed to do was lift the shutter off the pin on the hinge.

Exterior window shutters could also remain on the building, left in an open position. If using storm windows, please note that this was all dependent on the type and mounting of the shutter hinge. It is possible that the storm window would not be able to be inserted into the window jamb if a shutter hinge was in the way.

During the warm months, the storm windows would be removed and window shutters would be closed to protect furniture from the sun and allow outside air to cool the house.

At the end of the Civil War, awnings...

When you have decided on the style of your shutters, there are two main options for installing them. Frame-mounting is the most straightforward technique (the method used in these instructions). The shutters are built into a two-, three- or four-sided frame which is attached around or into the window recess. The frame of the window will need an adequate depth to accommodate the shutters and their fastenings without cutting out light. Large shutters are available that fold like an accordion to rest neatly against the wall surface.

The other option is hinge-mounting, this where the shutter hinges are attached directly to the existing window frame or jamb. With either option, you need to decide whether the shutters are going to be mounted within the window recess or around the...
