How do I wire my old 3/4hp 115-120v 50-60Hz HVAC motor to make an exhaust fan?

1

Since last I posted, I moved WAY south (lil warm down here) and the house I moved into was a foreclosure so a few things needed done, namely the AC and furnace. When the guy did the job he said he would (did?) leave the old motor behind so I could use it for some airflow in the garage. Here's what it looks like...

Onto my real questions -- I don't have the wiring diagram, but if I had to guess, I'd say that plug is a speed control (black the common?), and the white is the hookup. Is that right? And has anyone rigged one of these up and if so, how'd you do it?

==== updated 7/1/2012 ====

I got motivated today and started to clean it and look for tags that might help identify what it is -- and well, I think this answers everything (and I got a good picture of it!). It's a Westinghouse 323P683 1/4 hp, 115v motor so xcythe you we're close on those wires (much better than my guess).

If I'm reading this correctly...

I came up with a solution so I'm going to to go ahead and post it in case anyone else should happen upon this and find it useful.

I added the 1-in, 2-out, 4-position speed switch into the diagram. The switch works by taking one input and routing it thusly:
[1: (off) | 2:A | 3:B | 4:A+B]
and in this way controls speed by energizing either one part, 2 parts, or all 3 parts of the run (inner) winding (see diagram to help make sense of this).

I found conflicting information about achieving reverse (some sources said switch the polarity of the run winding, some said the start winding); I went with the start winding (the outer one) and it worked. Lastly, I found the capacitor was to be inserted in the start winding and that was straightforward enough.

With the AC input I made red Hot and blue Neutral; however it doesn't appear to me it would make any difference, other than that one way the reverse switch is up for clockwise rotation and the other it is up...

From questions I have read and step by step’s I have read a question came to my mind.

How powerful of a motor do you need to run an alternator?

I checked the Delco Remy alternator series from 10SI in 37 Amps, to the 40SI durable brushless model, in 240, 275, and 300 Amps.

All their performance charts show rpm’s at the alternator not the motor.

The pulley on the crankshaft is considerably larger than the pulley on the alternator, giving you more rpm’s at the alternator than at the motor.

All their performance charts show rpm’s from 1200 to 8000 rpm’s.

All their performance charts show at 3000 rpm’s you get 13/16ths of max power.

The last 5000 rpm’s only gaining 3/16ths of power.

The thing is none of the performance charts say the horsepower to drive the alternator.

I decided to approach the problem from a different direction
Typical alternator efficiencies are in the 54%-60% range.

How much should it cost to repair a house air conditioning unit's fan motor?

My fan just went out and I turned off the unit. I can hear the condenser motor running but the fan won't come on. My roommate said it was the actual fan motor and it shouldn't cost more than $150-200 to fix. I just wanted to find out how true that may be. Any help is most appreciated.

I had that same problem a few months ago and last year. The first time it was the fan motor and it was $80.00 to replace. The second time it was the breaker. We have a breaker for each fan...not sure if all AC is set up this way but it was $40.00 to replace. (Someone else doing the work) I'm sure this price can also be effected by what area you live in.
