How do you replace a pool pump where PVC installation is coupling to coupling?

To begin, toggle the pool pump to the off position, then also turn the switch on the valve off to minimize excess water flow. Open the drain port at the bottom of the pump system and let it thoroughly drain of water.

Cut the inlet and outlet pipes to the valve, using PVC cutters, allowing for room for the couplers to be installed. Typically, the gap should be less than 6 inches. Complete the removal by unscrewing the unions between the valve and the pool pump. Remove any other clamps holding the valve in position and set the old valve aside. Install the new valve using PVC couplers and attach it to the pump, then turn the pump back on.

Before replacing the entire valve, it can be checked for worn gaskets in need of replacing. To do this, turn off the pump and release the pressure inside the filter system. Unscrew the top of the valve and lift out the key stem assembly. The spider gasket is housed within the body of the valve; check it for wear and tear. If it is...

What is a pool pump?

A pool pump is a circulating pump designed to filter, turn over, clean and sanitise the water in a swimming pool. It is generally always an electric motor powered pump and except in commercial applications, a pool pump is powered by a small single phase motor. A pool pump is designed to handle certain things fairly specially.

The most critical thing that it is designed to handle is the water quality. Pool water is generally fairly neutral in pH but is generally high in dissolved salt (about 5g/L) and hardness (about 150ppm) and when you add the residual chlorine in the water can be very corrosive, cause large amounts of scale to build up and high wear and tear to components. In addition, pool water can have sand, leaves, lint and other rubbish in it that a pump needs to be able to handle. Because of this, a pool pump has certain things that are special:

Housing and pump parts are all plastic. Yes plastic is cheap and can get a bit brittle when...

Installing inground pool plumbing is something that you can do yourself and save some money in the process. An inground pool is much more streamlined than an above ground pool and adds a lot of character to the outside entertainment area. However, the installation of an inground pool can be very costly with the labor and materials. You can save a lot of money when you do a lot of the work yourself. Installing the inground pool plumbing is one of those projects.

Step 1: Install Skimmer and Drain

Before any of the finish steps are taken with your inground pool you can use a basic pool kit for the items like a skimmer, drain, and water inlets. Most kits come with everything you need for a successful installation. Each of these components basically slide into the openings. They will be connected to the piping behind them and will be held in place by the concrete liner of the pool.

Step 2: Connect Couplings

Use some PVC cleaner on each of the ends of the...

WEBSITE: In this video I will show you how to install a pool pump, specifically the plumbing of the pump. In part one I walk you through the wiring of the pool pump. To see that video: This is a very difficult set up area as it is a small equipment pad and the area back there is nothing but dirt. A messy area to work in for sure. Plus the plumbing was done in such an unnecessary tight fashion. There was no need to put the equipment in such a tight fashion with such a large area back there - but "it is what it is." So I was left with not much space at all unless I wanted to re-plumb the entire area and put in a new Jandy valve and backwash valve. Here are the parts I used in this video in order as they appear: 2" Male Adapter for front of the pump - note it fits over a 2" PVC pipe 1.5" Fitting Adapter - this fits over an existing elbow or coupling 2" Self Align Slip Union - essential in getting this...

A pipe coupling is any fitting or device used to join two or more pipes in such a way that continuity is maintained between them. The body of a pipe coupling is typically made of the same or similar materials as those used to construct the pipes it joins. They may be rigid or flexible depending on the amount of movement the pipe is subjected to and may per permanent or removable fixtures. A pipe coupling can be stepped or reduced in internal diameter to accept pipes of different sizes, be T or cross shaped to join more than two pipes, or angled to form bends. Pipe couplings may also include peripheral features or equipment such as inspection openings, flow meters, or valves.

Most pipe installations require that several lengths of pipe be joined together or cut to facilitate changes in direction and crossing of obstacles. This requires a fairly quick method of connecting the sections while maintaining the integrity of the pipes in the process. These couplings may be permanent...

Swimming Pool Plumbing: Rigid PVC vs. Flexible PVC, Which is Better?

By: Jason Hughes

Visit any online pool and spa forum and you'll find that a leak is one of the most frustrating experiences a pool owner can have. Finding, fixing, and not to mention paying for a leak will make anyone want to pull their hair out! Needless to say, a pool builder needs to use the best installation methods and building materials available to prevent leaks along with all the bloody consequences that follow. Today I want to turn our attention to the most fundamental component of a pool's plumbing: Polyvinyl Chloride tubing....or PVC pipe. There are two primary types of PVC pipe used in residential inground pool construction today: Rigid PVC pipe and Flexible PVC pipe. Let's compare these subterranean tubes to determine which you would rather have under your pool patio.

What Rigid PVC and Flexible PVC have in common:

Selecting the best coupling type for an application can have a positive impact on pump, driver, and/or coupling reliability and maintenance costs. Radial and/or axial loads that are transmitted to the pump and/or motor bearings (through the coupling) will reduce the life of these bearings. Further, any transmitted vibration will also short the life of the pump mechanical seal.

The primary function of a coupling is to transmit rotary motion and torque from one piece of equipment to another. Couplings may also perform other (secondary) functions, such as accommodating misalignment between shafts, transmitting (or not transmitting) axial thrust loads and vibration from one machine to another, permitting axial adjustment of the shafts to compensate for machinery wear, and maintaining precise alignment between connected shafts.

Another secondary function provided on many pump couplings is a separate "spacer" section...

In this article we will cover all aspects of replacing a pool pump motor. Typically pump motors will last for many years, but if they are exposed to excessive water, they can sometimes burn out quicker than normal. If you find yourself in this situation, then we’re here to help!

A basic understanding of electrical wiring and using a screwdriver and other basic tools is all that is needed for this repair. Although this repair is not overly technical, you will need the ability to follow step-by-step instructions, disassemble and reassemble several different parts and pay close attention as you go. Let's get started, but first:

WARNING: If you are unfamiliar with codes and regulations and/or unfamiliar with the voltage of your motor then you may want to consider having a professional perform this repair for you. Failure to perform this repair properly by wiring the motor correctly can result in electrical shock and can void the warranty.

The Marriage of a Solar Heater and a Swimming Pool's Mechanical and Plumbing System

If you're installing a pool or changing a pool pump don't make the mistake of thinking you need more pump power to accomodate solar. The opposite is in fact the real concern here. Up until very recently, pool pumps have been getting larger and larger as pool builders strive to outdo each other in an attempt to sell their pools. To be fair, pool building is a trade and it is competitive. Nobody wants to talk about what you can't do and if you size the pump properly for filtering it means that you can't run the vacuum at the same time you are skimming the surface of the water. It means you can't have a big dramatic waterfall from the spa to the pool at the same time the inlets are shooting water across the surface of the water. So instead of talking compromise or how to work around these very minor issues, the pool industry has simply used large enough pumps to do everything at once... and...

Pool and Spa Heaters Terminology

By heating the pool or a spa just a few hours each day, can extend the swimming season several weeks into the spring and fall. In warmer climates, a heater can allow you to swim all year round. Here is a glossary of basic terms that are commonly used for gas fueled heaters.

Gas Heaters

A typical gas-fueled heater uses natural or propane gas as the heating fuel. The water enters through one port of the front water header, then through the nine heat exchanger, and then out of the other port. Most of the heaters, water goes through at least four of the tubes and picks 6 to 9 degree F on each pass before leaving the heater.

The exchanger tubes are made of copper due to its excellent heat conductivity, there by transferring the heat effectively to the water. The tubes have fins to absorb heat even more efficiently and are topped...
