Ice or Water

However, if ice cubes are not to blame, other issues need to be identified and addressed to help avoid potentially costly repairs.

Kenmore refrigerators with a water and ice dispenser are more prone to experience what appears to be water leaking from the freezer, which may happen because the dispenser is located on the freezer door, and, if water drips from the dispenser or an ice cube falls out of the chute and melts on the floor, the water may be interpreted as a leak. Wipe up water in the dispenser grille on a regular basis, and pick up and discard any ice cubes that may fall out of the dispenser or glass when ice is dispensed.

Dispenser Leak

If you have determined that a melted ice cube is not responsible for the water leaking from the freezer, you can turn your attention to the ice and water dispenser. Dispense water for a few minutes from the dispenser if the refrigerator was recently installed and the water system has not been used...

Water can leak from these areas:

The bottom front of the refrigerator or freezer door
The back of the refrigerator
The inside ceiling of the refrigerator
The inside back wall of the refrigerator
Underneath the front of the refrigerator

The bottom front of the refrigerator or freezer door Self-defrosting refrigerators usually dispose of the water generated during the defrost cycle via a tube or channel that directs the water to a pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. From the pan, the water normally evaporates. (See a more detailed explanation of this in the How Things Work section of our website).

If the tube or channel is clogged or obstructed, the water backs up and leaks into the inside of the refrigerator compartment. Then the water builds up at the bottom, inside of the refrigerator. When the water has built up for a time it may spill out of the front of the door opening. To fix this problem, clear the drain tube or channel...

Thank you for your question. I know it can be disappointing when the dispenser stops working. If the dispenser is not working at all, first make sure the lock function is not activated, if it has this feature. If it's not locked, the most likely problem will be with freezer door interlock (light) switch. If this switch fails, there will be no voltage to the dispenser. To check this switch, first disconnect power to the unit. Now, pry the switch out with a small screwdriver. When the switch is out, connect the brown and gray wires together and make sure they do not touch anything. Now, reconnect the power and activate the dispenser. If it works now, the switch # WR23X427 will need to be replaced. It's available at

Raybo sflorida: why wouldnt you mention cost of fkn valve,,wtf!!!

gsy971: my tubing has small pin size holes in it that sprays all over when we get water from the dispenser. the tubing seems really really in there. is there a certain way to pull it out from those blue/green valves? sheer brute force? don't want to break anything more than it already is

Lisa Richard: Well explained!

Greg Wallace: Just turn the water off at the street one valve and done instead of turning off several valves. Don't forget to turn the temp down to pilot on the water heater if your city uses a back flow prevent-or on your supply line to the house and you do not have a expansion tank on the water heater.

If your refrigerator/freezer is a side by side model, then the leak would generally be coming from the freezer section and it would make some ice on the floor of the freezer until any depression was filled and then it would leak out the front of the freezer compartment onto the floor about 2 or 3 times a day. Depending on conditions, you could expect to see around 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water on the floor. In dryer conditions, the amount could be less.

If upon inspection, you find these conditions, then you most likely have a plugged drain. This is a moderately difficult job and should be attempted by those who have a good mechanical sense, who can follow safety rules for refrigerators and can follow directions. If you cannot do these things, please call a service center and have a certified repairman make the repair.

Unplug the refrigerator before attempting to service or repair. Failure to do so could cause severe damage to your refrigerator and serious injury.

Speak out for your right to repair.

New York,

New Yorkers stand up for what they believe in. And we're asking you to stand up for repair.

This year, New York could be the first state in the nation to pass the Fair Repair Act, A8192 and S618. We have a chance to guarantee our right to repair electronic equipment—like smartphones, computers, and even farm equipment. We have a chance to protect local repair jobs—the corner mom-and-pop repair shops that keep getting squeezed out by manufacturers.

It’s not going to be easy. Manufacturers are standing in the way. When your stuff breaks, they want to be the only people allowed to fix it. So far, they’ve managed to stop Fair Repair legislation before your representatives get a chance to vote on it. We’ve got to be louder than their lobbyists.

The Fair Repair Act, known as A8192 and S618, requires manufacturers to provide owners and independent repair...

A few days ago my Kenmore Elite Fridge, Model # 596.77533600, quit dispensing water and ice.

The display on the fridge was still working, the micro switch on the dispenser tested good, but it was intermittent dispensing water.

Mostly actually it was not. Really weird. Sometimes it would dispense water and ice with the right fridge door open, but not when closed.

After a while I came to the conclusion there is trouble on the main HV board on the back of the fridge. The HV control board # Maytag 12920710. Nothing out of order when you look at it. Then I began banging on the relays, but that wasn't the problem either.

Took the HV board out and started testing capacitors. On mine there is a Ltec branded 35V 270uF cap in position C14. That cap looks like brand new, no bulges, no leaks but measured a whopping 14.5uF with an ESR of 408 Ohms! Changed that sucker out and I've got a working fridge.

A 60 cent cap saved me $300 for a new board, or $2600...

When I joined forces with Brian to create the Handyguys Podcast I had no idea that so many subjects for future posts existed in my kitchen. The newest is a water and ice dispenser problem with my GE side by side. My dishwasher problems (and fixes!) keep this site busy. My GE side-by-side refrigerator is now in a competition with the Kenmore elite (Whirlpool made) dishwasher as the worst appliance ever owned by Handyguy Paul. Last night I fixed one more water and ice dispenser problem that has driven the kids crazy.

Let’s review previous problems with this unit.

Model: GE side by side stainless steel gss25tsre.SS. Purchased 10/2005:

1. Shelves too small in freezer causing them to crash to bottom of freezer. GE sent replacements.

2. Water tank leak. Fixed 10/2011.

3. Defrost problems causing the freezer coils to freeze up which makes freezer and refrigerator compartments too warm. Temporary solution was to remove back wall panel of freezer...

If your refrigerator water dispenser is dispensing either no or slow water, here is what to check to fix it. (No or Slow Water from Dispenser) If your refrigerator is newly installed, make sure you push the water dispenser lever down for 3 minutes to get the water reservoir to fill up completely. Usually the water reservoir is located inside the fresh food section. Top mount refrigerator models do not apply because there is no water reservoir.

On most refrigerator dispensers whether it be a Whirlpool refrigerator, Frigidaire refrigerator, Samsung refrigerator, KitchenAid refrigerator, Haier refrigerator, Jennair refrigerator, GE refrigerator, LG refrigerator, Kenmore Elite refrigerator, or Maytag refrigerator, it should take on average 8 seconds to fill an 8 ounce glass of water.

If your refrigerator has no lights on the control panel and no water or ice, check power to the refrigerator.

If all of a sudden your fridge is not dispensing water:

Like any other home appliance or kitchen appliance, an instant hot-water dispenser too needs proper care and maintenance. If cared properly, it can serve you for ears without any problem. Following are some of the tips to take proper care of your instant hot-water dispenser to extend its life:

Before doing any repair or maintenance work on the unit, make sure to unplug it from the power supply. The water has a very high temperature and can scald or seriously burn anyone. Keep children away from the unit or monitor them when they use the unit. Keep the unit clean. If you not going to use the unit for a longer period of time,, make you disconnect and empty the unit. If the dispenser has a faucet screen, use a small brush and vinegar to remove hard-water deposits. Repair or replace a leaky hot water dispenser immediately.

Following DIY information should help you repair your hot water dispenser. The information applies to most makes and models including: General Electric, JC...

Candi Harris: Can anyone tell me how to replace the clear plastic spout thing that the water comes through? Ours is broken, so the water shoots straight out! Can't seem to find a video that shows me how to do that.

basenoter: I'm having an issue with my refrigerator dispenser, the odd thing is once I remove the filter the water dispenser does work. Has anyone else experienced this issue ?

RJT21: Thank you! Yours was the only video to clearly show the proper way to remove the front panel lower clips. Knowing I needed a new door flap and there was a retrofit kit that doesn't have the flap heater - and also a kit to repair broken door hinges internally if needed, I wanted to remove the panel prior to ordering to ensure I only needed the new door kit and also to unplug the door flap heater that is contributing to the dripping water caused by the also worn out foam on the door flap.

Question 1: Why is there an ice or water dispensing problem?
Answer 1: The ice and water dispenser system for refrigerators is very complicated. There are many components working together that provide your ice and water. Make sure the household water is turned on to the ice maker, and make sure that there are no kinks in the water line. Next, inspect the feeler arm of the ice maker and make sure that it is down and not blocked by any ice cubes. If it’s raised, it has turned the ice maker off. This arm needs to be in the lowered position to activate the ice maker An over-abundance of ice in the bin will make the arm stay up as a safety feature to keep the ice maker from making more ice than the bin can hold.

The water filter may be plugged with sediment, or you may have low water pressure. The water pressure for ice makers needs to be at least 40 psi, and up to about 120 psi for proper operation. Water filters need to be changed every six months. If you would like to...

It could be any of several reasons and each should be checked out. The list starts from the most likely to the least, but that does not mean that any of them cannot be the reason.

Is the ice tray filled or empty in the icemaker? You can see or feel them by opening the front service cover which should lift up. If it is filled then it may be frozen in place due to water leakage and unable to rotate and deliver the cubes. That MIGHT be GOOD if when thawed out (using a hair dryer) it starts making cubes again. IF it is empty then water is not getting to the tray. That is BAD.

Does water still come out of the door IF you have a door dispenser? If YES then no need to pull the frig out and check that the water is still turned on behind the unit. If you do not have a dispenser then check that water is entering the unit. That is GOOD.

Can you see a black rubber hose (not always) running into the or near the top of the ice tray on the ice maker INSIDE the freezer? If so,...

Well, mine was! Apparently it is a fairly common problem for the water dispenser line in the GE side by side refrigerators to freeze. It seems there is an issue with the insulation inside the door taking on too much moisture so it doesn’t insulate the line well enough to keep it from freezing.

If you need to check if your line is frozen, simply remove the kick plate off the bottom of the fridge then unhook the water line just under the left door. Simply pull the two blue tabs apart to unhook the line. Place a cup under the line going towards the back of the refrigerator then activate the water dispenser. If water flows then the water line is frozen inside the door. Hook up the water line again and replace the kick plate.

To thaw your line, use this handy IceSurrender Frozen Water Line Tool or simply blow a hair dryer on high heat at the water line, water dispenser control panel and the back (outside) of the door near the water line for about 15 minutes. That thawed it...

There have been numerous comments left in the comment section from folks experiencing trouble with their water dispensers after installation of the new water filter. The following are several suggestions to trouble shoot the problem:

Before installing the new water filter be sure to REMOVE the filter end caps. In this example they are red pieces of plastic the cover the two ports on the end of the water filter. The directions are fairly specific about how to purge air from the system after the filter replacement. Once the new filter is installed you need to use a large container to purge water from the dispenser. Follow these instructions from the manufacturer:Use a sturdy container to depress and hold the water dispenser lever for 5 seconds, then release it for 5 seconds. Repeat until water begins to flow. Once water begins to flow, continue depressing and releasing the dispenser lever (5 seconds on, 5 seconds off) for an...

My LG dishwasher has been leaking water out of the door, leaving a puddle on the floor and threatening to do some serious damage to the hardwoods underneath! After searching on the internet and finding a number of other folks that have the same problem and solutions that all seemed to point to having to buy a new door for it, I decided to do a little reverse engineering and see if I could figure out what was going on. The other common answer for the leaking problem (with the common response being that it doesn’t fix the problem) is a new door gasket. The good news is that I solved my problem for less than $40 using just a phillips screwdriver in about 20 minutes (once I had the part). I hope my solution might help you too.

The door was leaking on the lower left side, filling up half of a small cereal bowl with each cycle. Upon a closer inspection, leak was coming from a plastic attachment which turned out was the venting system for the drying cycle. It didn’t have anything...
