There are two practical ways to deal with this. Before getting into details let me say that you should stop trying to join the trap parts of metal pipe to the trap parts of plastic pipe.

Method 1. Remove the metal pipe with the J bend and complete the P trap with plastic parts. Then join the plastic pipe to the down flow drain system where the pipes are straight and concentric with each other. There are slip type couplings to join the plastic to the metal in this way.

Method 2. Take out the plastic P trap parts and then re-build the connection from the metal J bend up to the drain of the sink using compatible metal parts. Note that metal parts are much more expensive and harder to work with so take that into consideration when selecting which method to use.

Do be aware that it may not be appropriate to be using a J bend pipe as part of the drain trap. Standing water in a trap should be confined primarily in the trap part itself and single tapered swivel joint...

How to Bury Corrugated Drainage Pipes

A corrugated drainage pipe is also known as a French drain. The pipe contains small holes on one side in order to allow it to absorb water from the soil. It is important to properly bury a corrugated drain pipe so that water does not make its way bac[More]

Generic term used in the case of polymeric material that may contain other substances
to improve performance and/or reduce costs.

Note 1: The use of this term instead of polymer is a source of confusion and thus is
not recommended.

Note 2: This term is used in polymer engineering for materials often compounded that
can be processed by flow.

Plastic is a material consisting of any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organics that are malleable and can be molded into solid objects of diverse shapes. Plastics are typically organic polymers of high molecular mass, but they often contain other substances. They are usually synthetic, most commonly derived from petrochemicals, but many are partially natural.Plasticity is the general property of all materials that are able to irreversibly deform without breaking, but this occurs to such a degree with this class of moldable polymers that their name is an emphasis on this ability.

The best way to joint PVC and ABS plastic pipe

Photo 1: Connecting PVC and ABS

Slide the steel jacket onto the pipe. Then slide the rubber sleeve over one pipe and then the other. You may have to roll the sleeve back to get the pipe in. Tighten the jacket over the rubber.

A transition coupling consists of a rubber sleeve and steel jacket.

If you’re plumbing in a new drain or vent and have to join two different kinds of plastic pipe, black ABS and white PVC, don’t assume that you can simply glue them together. Most plumbing codes don’t allow ABS pipe to be solvent-welded (glued) to PVC. Check with your local plumbing inspector. The proper way is to use a transition coupling (Photo 2), a neoprene rubber sleeve that fits over each pipe. It’s then held tight with a stainless steel metal jacket and integral clamps. The coupling will be...

Before building code changes, sewer lines in older homes were made of clay, cast iron or lead. New homes generally have sewer lines made of either PVC or ABS hard plastic. When connecting a PVC toilet flange to an existing lead sewer pipe, the connection between the two materials is made with a flexible rubber coupling. Toilet flanges look like a short section of plastic pipe with a lip attached at one end, which has screw holes used to attach the flange to the bathroom floor.

Measure between the top of the lead pipe and one inch below the surface of the bathroom floor. Use a handsaw to cut a section of 4-inch PVC sewer pipe to that length. Make the cut straight, and scrape away all burrs or plastic fragments from the cut with a workman's knife.

Slip a rubber flange halfway onto the end of the lead pipe. Push the newly-cut section of PVC pipe into the other half of the rubber flange (the flange will new be half on the lead pipe, and half on the PVC pipe). Tighten the...

Plumbing projects can be relatively simply, or more complicated based on where it is located and how much of the house you have to tear up to get to it. If your plumbing is primarily buried in a cement slab under your house, your plumbing problems are going to be more complicated and more expensive to repair because breaking concrete is more tedious than digging up ground in a crawl space or areas surrounding the house.

Some plumbing projects are definitely best left up to the professionals but if you have a working knowledge of how the water flows in your home, and some basic skills, you can repair minor issues on your own and save some money in the process.

One of the easiest projects to do is repairing or replacing exposed PVC pipe. However, most areas require a permit before you can make plumbing changes to your home, so check with the authorities in your area before you begin any PVC projects because you do not want...

This is a common question. Many of our customers want to replace their old Cast Iron Soil Pipe with a new PVC system, but without the hassle of digging up the concrete to replace the drain connection. The answer is to cut off the cast iron at ground level, and make the connection with the specialy designed SP140 connector.

The rubberised fins push inside the old pipe to make an airtight seal, and the new PVC soil pipe fits straight into the integral socket - job done! The SP140 is available in both Black and Grey options.

If your cast iron pipe is too small in diameter to accept the SP140 (this is rare but can happen), remove the fins and then try to push it in. If it fits without fins you will need to seal the joint with silicon sealant and ideally sand and...
