How to deal with clear flakes off my wooden headboard

Strip and renew wood before restaining

Photo 1: Scrub

Scrub off old stain using a stiff brush and deck finish remover. Give the remover 15 to 30 minutes to soften the stain before you scrub.

Photo 2: Sand

Sand off tough spots or small areas with a coarse stripping pad on a grinder or drill.

Stripping disc

Stripping discs are faster and more effective than regular sanders and work best on angle grinders.

Photo 3: Condition

Brush on a brightener/conditioner diluted in water. Scrub the decking and rinse thoroughly to restore the original wood color.

If the stain on your deck is weathered and peeling, the first step in renewing your deck is to remove all the stain. Solid-color stains protect wood decks and look great when new, but even the best eventually flake and wear away. At that point they need to be scraped and stripped off before the deck can be recoated.

First, scrape off as much of the old finish as you...

Fast and effective removal of paint using a paint stripper and scraper

Removing paint from wood

You might be the lucky owner of a lovely period home, or have an old wood floor that you’re sure will come up beautifully with a bit of work. You may have found a fabulous piece of old furniture smothered with nasty, brown, shiny varnish that’s begging for some TLC, or you might suspect there’s something really special under all those layers of ancient paint on your doors. Whatever you want to do, first you’ll need to get all of that rubbish off the surface to reveal the stunning wood beneath. Thankfully contemporary stripping products are relatively simple, effective and safe to use. Much better than the bad old days when your...

Rust ”iron mold” may seem like a difficult mark to remove, but in fact it does not require any drastic treatment.

Lemon juice is useful as a gentle treatment for rust stains. If you do not have any fresh lemons on hand, lemon juice from a bottle works just as well.

Hold a white, absorbent pad under the rust stain, and apply lemon juice from the cut half of a lemon.

Cover the lemon juice with salt, and let dry for an hour (if possible, in the sun). Rinse off, then launder.

Other Surfaces
• On carpets Remove rust marks with a commercial rust remover, following the instructions carefully.
• On nonwashable fabrics Use a commercial rust remover, then wipe with a damp cloth. A little lemon juice may help (be careful not to overwet the area).

Soot Marks
These are a common problem in homes that have open fires.

Soot marks should wash out of clothes easily – but use a spray stain remover on any persistent stains.

I wrote an article about staining wood some time ago, but here I’d like to show you how to make pallet wood even more interesting. Most of the pallets used for projects have been around for some time so already have some character but what if you want to use new pallets?

I’ve found 8 ways how to make wood look old, weathered or distressed. Of course, you can find more online as people are experimenting all the time to achieve desired results. I’ve picked the ones I really liked and I’m going to try out myself.

1. Using Wood Stain

The first one is pretty straightforward. I’ve found it on prettyhandygirl.com. To achieve that kind of weathered look all you need is two stains.

First, you need to stain the wood with any sun-bleached color stain (like Rustoleum wood stain) and wipe off the excess. Then you add a little brown stain(i.e. Minwax Early American) and wipe it off.

You could use a weathered gray as well. It is a trial and error method so you...

Carpenter bee with shiny black abdomen.

Chances are you’ve been buzzed by a large, intimidating-looking bee when working on the outside of your home. You may also have the telltale holes in your woodwork where these bees build their nests.

About Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees are large black and yellow bees that resemble bumblebees. But while bumblebees are fuzzy all over; carpenter bees have a large, shiny, solid black abdomen.

While they may look scary, male carpenter bees – the ones most likely to dive-bomb your head with a whitish spot on their face – don’t even have stingers, and females generally won’t sting unless you aggravate them.

Carpenter bees get their names by the perfectly round, half-inch or so diameter holes that they drill in wood for their nests. In the spring, the bees emerge from their winter nests, mate, and set about building this year’s nest.

The female bee uses sharp teeth to excavate a perfectly round tunnel in...

I’m in high school, FYI, and I was having by birthday party this weekend and I asked all of my friends about 2 weeks ago to say yes or no, and one of my friends, let’s call her “H”, said yes the next day, and by last week, everybody has said yes.

Now, a few days before my party, my friend texts me and apologizes to me saying she can't make it, because her strict (annoying AF) dad decided to book a trip to South Carolina to see family and catch the solar eclipse, and she said she begged her dad to come but he said “no”, and I'm very upset. 1 of my friends said no because she was unable to come (she texted me last week), 3 more of my friends are coming (they take forever to respond to messages and it's really annoying) and my cousin who is also my age is coming too because we’re close. But….H is close to me and we relate to each other a lot and it's disappointing because she flakes on me CONSTANTLY.

Once, her parents were supposed to drop me and my friends off to Six...

There's a million stereotypes associated with bands & musicians but the one that holds true is that of the flaky band member.

Just about every band has one, maybe even two or maybe it's you?! The flake, lager, however you want to phrase it, this person will break up a band in no time if you don't deal with them right away!

The allure of playing in a band, performing to an attentive crowd is too strong to resist. So much so that even the most intermediate musician will start a band as soon as they master the power chord. Sure, anyone would love to be in a band as their primary source of income, playing shows across the country, traveling, it's living the proverbial dream. For some, that dream is a tangible goal & they'll work their ass off to achieve it! For others, it's a fantasy best lived out in the rehearsal room or local bars on the weekend. What separates the weekend warriors from the hard core musicians is where they decide to place the band on the priority...

You’ve finally set the date, and you’re ready to go. But the minute you get out of the car to walk to the restaurant, you get a text. It’s him. He’s telling you 15 minutes before your date that he can’t make it. Frustrating as it may be, try to hold off on exploding into rage. Instead, take the following steps:

“Oh no, that’s too bad!” Give him the benefit of the doubt. Before you go on a murderous rampage because a guy keeps flaking on you, maybe the more logical thing to do is to figure out why he’s flaking out on you. There is a slight chance that he’s doing this not because he wants to, but because he has more important things to do. And keep in mind that if you’re just in the early dating phase, you simply can’t expect to be his number one priority.

Good reasons for him flaking out on you would include sudden rush tasks from his demanding job, a family member that he needs to care for, or a genuine emergency like a broken down car, losing his wallet, or...

Different Wax Brands?

Many brands of paste wax exist, from stuff you can buy at Home Depot to more “boutique” waxes sold with chalk and milk paint lines.

From my personal experience, the main difference between the various brands is in how environmentally-friendly their ingredients are and their softness or consistency.

Over these past several years, I have tried many different waxes and used many different waxing techniques. I know what I like and what I don’t like, and what seems to generally work and what most often doesn’t.

In an effort to cut down on costs, I tried using the hardware store brands (like Fiddes & Sons and Minxwax) rather than boutique furniture brands (Annie Sloan, Miss Mustard Seed’s, etc) but was disappointed with the hardware store brands as a whole. They had a really bad smell that lingered for quite some time and I found them thicker in consistency and harder to smooth out.

So since I was waxing a lot, I decided to spend...

Though you might be tempted to throw away a worn or faded wood headboard, you shouldn't. These headboards can be expensive, and, despite wear, they can last for years to come. Instead, you can give it a facelift with a fresh coat of paint. Use the steps detailed below to get started.

Step 1 – Preparing Your Workspace and Headboard

Remove your headboard from the bed, and take it to any area where you have plenty of room to work, like a garage or a dry, shady spot outside. Put down a drop cloth and place the headboard on top of it.

Check your wooden headboard for any dents, dings, or warping. Fix a warped headboard or minor flaws in it before continuing to the next step.

Step 2 – Sanding the Wood

Sand the entire surface of the wood headboard to remove any splinters and give your primer a smooth surface to stick to. If you have any designs in your wood, fold up small pieces of sandpaper to get into the creases.

Cleaning up Dust

Once you’ve...

During the winter, I spend a good chunk of my morning cursing the outdoors. At this point, it's pretty much part of my daily routine: wake up, eat, yell at the cold, go to work. No matter how many creams and oils I slather on my face, I inevitably end up with dry, flaking skin. And if you've ever tried to apply makeup to shedding skin, you know that the struggle is real and the results are often terrible. So I asked Susie Sobol, a makeup artist in New York City, for her tricks for dealing with dry skin...without the morning drama.

Prep the skin. The first step to a flake-free face is to use a light exfoliant and a rich moisturizer. "A rice powder is a wonderful way to slough off any surface dryness that would normally cause foundation to clump," says Sobol, who loves Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. "A half teaspoon mixed with water creates a beautiful creamy cleanser that will deflake the skin gently," she adds. Next, and most obviously,...

Preventing bubbles and "craters" in varnish

If not properly applied, wood varnish can develop bubbles that remain on the surface or pop to form craters. To prevent bubbling, never shake a container of varnish-stir it gently.

Bubbles also appear during rapid application with a foam brush. Another cause of bubbles: tapping the brush on the container to remove the excess after dipping in the varnish. If there’s too much varnish on the brush, gently press the brush against the side of the container.

Wood filler and putty: the finishing touch to woodworking projects

For a perfect finish to varnished woodwork or other woodworking projects, fill all nail holes and voids. Voids disappear when filled flush to the surface with properly colored putty. Stain the wood first, then fill the holes with putty after the stain has dried. This enables you to perfectly match the color without depending on the stain to color the filler.

Headboards

Since the bed is the primary element in all bedrooms in terms of function and design, you can add life to it and the entire room with the simple addition of a headboard. Consider headboards as the crowning glory of beds. They are furniture pieces that give beds distinctive character and either dictate or complement the entire look and feel of the bedroom. More than just a design piece, some headboards give you a comfortable backrest when reading a book or watching TV in bed. Others may also serve to obscure the view and light from the outside if set against a window or a glass block portion of a wall.

Headboards come in a wide range of sizes, materials, designs and features such as those available from west elm. While the available widths options of headboards are the same as the standard widths of beds, they do not follow a standard for height as style usually takes precedence in this regard. The height of a headboard helps define the boundaries of your...
