How to install a ceiling lamp that doesn't have holes

I want to install this simple Ikea lamp, but I'm dumbfounded by what is expected from me.

Yeah, I can see why you might be.

Honestly, I understand the original reason for picture-only instructions (they save money and paper when you're selling the same product in many countries with different languages), and I even understand that they've become a part of IKEA's brand identity. But surely it wouldn't kill their budget (or their marketing) to occasionally splurge a bit and indulge in a couple of words on their manuals, especially when said manuals deal with electrical safety. The Sumerians invented writing 5000 years ago for a reason, and the reason is that, sometimes, there are some things that you just can't express clearly and easily by drawing cartoons on clay (or on paper).

Still, being kind of used to deciphering these kinds of instructions, let me decode this picture puzzle for you, and provide the "missing captions" that the instructions should've...

Prepare a container of spackle. Many brands of spackle or putty come premixed in disposable containers, and can just be opened and used. Drywall compounds are also available that can be mixed in a small, disposable cup.

Remove the debris around the hole. Strip away any old paint or loose and flaking spots of drywall. If the hole was created by a screw or other attachment that affixed something to the ceiling, make sure all of the attachment pieces have been removed from the area, including inside the hole.

Dust the area around the hole with a toothbrush or small paintbrush to remove any dust.If the hole is larger than half an inch, use an adhesive mesh tape on the hole. Scrape the area around the ceiling hole, and apply the tape in strips that run at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) past the hole before preparing the area for spackling.

Moisten a small, soft sponge and dampen the hole, rubbing gently. Make sure the ceiling hole is...

Installing a new light fixture is a great way to instantly change a drab room into a dazzling one. Lighting showrooms and catalogs have a wide variety of fixtures to tempt you. And even though the bag of parts included with some fixtures may look daunting, the electrical connections are simple enough for even a beginner.

But poor installation techniques can result in a potentially lethal shock or fire. In this article, we’ll help you choose a fixture that will mount safely on your electrical box and then show you the best techniques for testing a ground and connecting the wires. We’ve even included photos of the two most common mounting systems to help you make sense of all those little parts.

The temperature rating of your existing wires will affect which type of fixture you can install. Before you go shopping, read “Remove the old fixture and inspect the wiring,” below.

What are the benefits of the ceiling fans?

Ceiling fans are sometimes underrated by the homeowners, who think that they’re an unnecessary source of the additional electricity expenditure. Some people also think that those fixtures are the fillers of any interior design and avoid installing them even being aware of their benefits. However, if you choose the right ceiling fan with interesting blade designs and shapes, you’ll be able to incorporate it into the room decor just as any other lighting fixture. And, if you have those good old fans that squeak and rattle vigorously when they work, you should certainly think about replacing them. As modern fixtures and their lighting part is designed the way that the fan produces hardly any noise while working.

The most important thing is that ceiling fans are actually really budget-friendly. They decrease the electricity bills due to the fact that they make the cool air move around the room. And, when that happens, it feels...

How To Install A Heat Lamp In The Ceiling

A heat lamp provides light plus heat, warming the room in which it was installed. Though this type of lamp can be installed in an existing light socket, it is not recommended. Standard sockets are compatible with 75-watt bulbs. A heat lamp bulb is usually rated either 150 or 250 watts and the wattage rating of the light socket should be at least as high as the bulb wattage. Installing a heat lamp into a bathroom ceiling outside of the shower area will keep it warm when you are toweling off from a bath or shower.

You will need:

• Heat lamp bulb
• High wattage light socket
• Flathead screwdriver
• Phillips head screwdriver
• Side cutter wrench
• Stud finder

If you would like to add an extra fan or change a light fixture to your home; stop before calling a contractor. You may be able to do the work yourself. Installing a fan or other surface mounted device can easily be done as long as there already is an fixture box in the ceiling. A fixture box is required for any ceiling lighting, so if you are replacing an old fixture you should be able to complete this small project in a few hours.

Before buying a new fixture, you must take a look at the fixture box. This is the metal object that contains the wires to power your old fixture. If your fixture box is not nailed to a joist, the fixture you buy must weigh less than 5 pounds. If it is nailed to the joist, there are no restrictions unless your new fixture is 30 pounds or more. Then your fixture must be attached to the metal fixture box with a reducing nut or hickey.

The easiest way to examine the fixture box is to remove the old fixture. Before beginning, make sure that...

Next, it is time to wire the fixture for power to the fan motor and for the light if appropriate. When you perform this step you'll understand why the previous step of relieving pressure on the wires is so important.

The model of fixture you have and how you want it switched will determine how it gets wired. See your instructions for details on specific wiring requirements. However, in general, if you want the light and motor controlled by the same wall switch, wire it as shown. First connect the... ground wires (bare or green) to the ground screw, then connect the white wires and the black and/or blue wires. The black and blue wires are the hot wires for the motor and the light.

Connect the wires with plastic screw on wire nuts and if necessary. wrap electrical tape around the wire nut and wires in a clockwise direction.

Gently push the wires back into the electrical ceiling box to the extent...

If you had asked me a year ago would I ever write an article called "how to install a drop ceiling" I would have looked at you like you had three heads. Yet, here I am. Or rather, here we are.

I taught myself how to install a drop ceiling and here's the result. It makes me tear up with joy each time I go down to my basement. I'm writing this article to show you how to do yours.

I'm guessing you are here for the same reason that I was Googling for days on end a year ago. You want to know if you can install a drop ceiling in your basement on your own.

The short answer is yes! Yes you can and it's not that hard. You can save a lot of money by doing it yourself IF you don't make some of these key mistakes.

If you're here because you're still trying to decide should you go with a drop ceiling over a drywall ceiling for your basement then make sure to read both sides of the debate here on the site. Here's Jason's article that is definitely against drop...

Ceiling lights with two or more bulbs not only provide more light than a single-bulb fixture, but they often are decorative and ornate as well. Whether the new light fixture is flush with the ceiling or a hanging fixture, you can install a ceiling light that has two bulbs to a single junction box so that all of the bulbs in the new fixture are controlled by the same switch. In many cases, you can even connect the new fixture to a dimmer switch to control the amount of light provided by the fixture.

Turn off the circuit breaker providing power to the electrical circuit for the light. Remove the plate covering the light switch, and hold the tip of a noncontact electrical tester against the wiring on the side of the switch. If the tester light comes on, there is still power to the circuit. Turn off other breakers or the main breaker to the house and test again until the tester shows that the power is off. Replace the switch plate.

Position a stepladder beneath the light...

To tap the GFCI-protected receptacle, first shut off the power to the receptacle, and remove its weather-proof cover. Next, install a metal extension box over the receptacle. Then, run 1/2-in. EMT conduit between the box extension and a tee conduit body,. Extend a length of conduit down from the tee conduit body through the deck. Join the EMT and the PVC conduit under the deck with a male adapter and a threading coupling. Bring a second length of conduit up from the tee conduit body for a switch box, and install the switch box. Tighten the fittings.

We installed separate insulated 14-ga. wires, avoiding cable, which is too difficult to pull through 1/2-in. conduit. We used a white, a black, and a green found wire. Pull these wires from the receptacle and switch box to the light. Leave at least 8 ft of excess wire above the concrete base.

Install the light heads on the post, and feed wires into the post from the bottom, until they protrude through the top. Then,...

To begin:

Be sure to read and follow all instructions that come with the fan unit and fan-support brace, which may differ from instructions given here.

Assuming your local regulations permit you to perform minor electrical (etc.) work, proceed as follows:

Wear protective equipment as necessary (recommend safety glasses, gloves, dust mask at minimum).

Follow safe ladder use guidelines (see link below)

Practice safe lifting techniques (see link below)

Follow manufacturers' instructions for safe use of tools needed to perform this task.

Turn off power to the circuit feeding the existing ceiling light (i.e., remove fuses, switch off circuit breakers in the circuit panel).

Note: Be sure to secure a legibly printed label/tag at the circuit panel, to alert anyone who might potentially re-energize the circuits that you are working on the system.

Label should read: "DO NOT TOUCH! I AM WORKING...

Instruction how to install recessed lighting

Step 1:

Work on the installation of built fixtures begins before hanging the construction of the ceiling or walls. Calculate the number of fixtures in such a way that the room was light enough. Select the desired range of lamps, because "cold" lighting will be out of place in the bedroom, for example. Once you know the number of lamps, prokinte electrical wires inside the structures, and with a small margin on the length to the installation you feel comfortable connecting fixtures.

“Old is Gold”, it is an old saying. It however holds a lot of relevance even today. No matter how many new technologies come up to cool our rooms during the summer seasons and to warm them up during the winter season, nothing can sway away the humble fan out of the market. Fans have two-fold benefits, in winter season it can be used to circulate hot air making the room warm and during summers it can be used to circulate the cool air of the AC. This will also cut down the load on your appliance like ACs and heaters. One can save a good amount of money by learning to install this all purpose appliance. Fixing appliances can be scary; especially the thought of getting an electric shock gets many people jittery. However, if you have little knowledge about your house wiring, and if you are good with hammers and drills, you can easily fix your new fan. Reading through the sections below will give you step by step guidelines to fix a fan.

"Let there be light!"- Said the electrician and unplug all cables. Yes, it is a banal situation that can happen to anyone, if the theoretical knowledge and practical skills are not enough to qualitatively follow the steps for installation of lighting. Lighting of modern apartments is not limited to the classic chandelier. A variety of fixtures impressive mind and pleases the imagination of customers, and how to install them "leads to a deadlock."

Lamps of different design modificationsrequire an individual approach to their installation. Power products, the number and their place in the interior - all these are important criteria for the correct setup and correct connection of the luminaire to the electrical wiring.

Attention! Getting mounting luminaire, do not forget about safety precautions when working with electricity.

piddler51: If the green ground on the fixture is attached to a metal box and the bracket for the fan in a two wire system, how does the charge go back to the ground if there is no path to the ground in a two wire system? Does it go back via the neutral?? Looks like the fan casing and matal box would become hot if there is a short?

A suspended ceiling can cover a lot of flaws and obstructions, including pipes, wiring, and ductwork. It works, however, only where you can afford to lose some ceiling height. Suspended ceiling panels are sold in 2 X 2-foot and 2 X 4-foot sizes. Use the smaller size for smaller rooms. To install a suspended ceiling:

Step 1: Measure the ceiling and plot it out on graph paper, marking the exact locations of all windows and doors. Mark the direction of ceiling joists. Mark the joists on the ceiling itself, using a pencil or chalk to draw the joist lines across the ceiling.

Step 2: Take the diagram with you when you buy the ceiling materials. With the dealer, plan the layout for the ceiling, figuring full panels across the main ceiling and evenly trimmed partial panels at the edges. To calculate the width of the border panels in each direction, determine the width of the gap left after full panels are placed all across the dimension; divide this number by two. The dealer...

Adding a ceiling fan to a room is a fairly easy project for the average home handyman. While normally installed for cooling, ceiling fans can help with a home's heating as well, circulating the hot air that accumulates along the ceiling down into the room, where the people are. Most ceiling fans come with a switch to reverse the fan's direction. This allows the fan to push air downward in the summer for cooling and pull it upward in the winter to facilitate heating.

Most modern houses are built with light fixtures in the center of every room's ceiling, providing an easy place to connect a ceiling fan. The light fixture is removed and the fan installed in its place. This drastically reduces the amount of work required to install the ceiling fan, as the necessary wiring is already in place.

Depending on how the home is wired, there might be a single switch to control both the fan and light, or a dual switch for separate control of the fan and switch. All ceiling fans...

A ceiling fan is a stylish and functional addition to any room. If you are planning to install a ceiling fan in a room that already has a ceiling outlet, wiring a ceiling fan is the same as wiring any ceiling fixture. If the room doesn’t have an overhead box, hire an electrician to install the box and fish the wires through the walls and across the ceiling. Save the fun of installing the actual fan for yourself.

If you can access the ceiling on which you want to attach the fan from the attic or from an overhead area, you have several choices in the type of box you install. If you can’t get to the area above the box, you have to use an adjustable hanger bar designed for installation through the hole left by the existing ceiling box.

1Turn off the power at the fuse or circuit panel.

You may find several pairs of wires in the ceiling box. Some may be wired to circuits other than the one that the fixture you’re working on uses. Be safe: Use a circuit tester or...

Residential ceiling fixtures come in many different shapes, and people have devised many ways to attach them to the ceiling. Most of the time, a central threaded hollow rod holds a chandelier in place. Ceiling fixtures hang by two screws that attach the fixture base to the outlet box or to a mounting strap in the outlet box.

No matter how you suspend a fixture from the ceiling, the wiring is simple. Other wires may pass through the box, but you have to deal with only three wires: a colored wire (usually black), a white wire, and a green ground wire. These three wires are joined together with twist-on wire connectors.

Get someone to help you replace a ceiling fixture. After you loosen the screws that hold the existing fixture to the ceiling box, you have your hands full holding the fixture and trying to work on the wires. You may be able to pull off this juggling act with a light fixture, but if you’re messing with a chandelier, you need another pair of hands...

Obtain a FAN RATED BOX from home supply or electrical supply store. It will likely be best to buy the old work (not new construction) style if you do not have access to the ceiling from above. There are two types of old work boxes; one fan rated box is designed to straddle an existing joist; this style can be easier to install, but requires that you find the joist rather than avoid it. The other type has an adjustable bar that expands to span between two joists, it can be a little more involved to install but allows more mounting location choices. Either type works equally well.

After determining where you want to install the fan, assess your ability to get power to it. See the tips section below for some ideas for a power source. Adjust this location as needed. Next, cut a hole by hand with a sheetrock saw; just large enough to feel around with your fingers to check for potential obstructions for the box. This small opening will make patching easier...
