How to repair rotten plywood board under vinyl bay/bow window?

This vinyl bow window was installed about 15-20 years ago:

Overall it looks and works OK, but the underside is wood and has severely rotted around the outer edges:

Here's a detail of one corner. There is a cut hole in both outer corners, with what appears to be a rusty bolt head visible inside. The wood appears to be plywood, and around the outside edge it has rotted to the point that you can easily break it away with your fingers. My guess is that this is due to water wicking back along the underside of the window when it rains, and it should have been constructed or flashed differently to avoid that.

How should this be repaired? In particular:

Is it possible to disassemble and replace the rotted piece from the outside in a bottom-up approach, or would you remove the inner window sill and work downward? Is this even repairable or does this effectively guarantee there are deeper problems with the window? How would I prevent this rot...

Bay and bow windows are absolutely stunning on any home and instantly boost curb appeal. Common in the Northeast, bay and bow windows, are iconic staples of the New England Cape Cod home design and most commonly found in Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. This design trend also carries through into Midwestern states from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin.

The choice to replace a bay or bow window is a big one as the windows are significant investments for any homeowner. To that end, we wanted to create this guide on how to replace your bay or bow window. Here are the nine most commonly asked questions from homeowners when they are considering a bay or bow window replacement.

What is the difference between a bay or bow window?

Here is an example of a bay window. Typically bay windows are smaller than bow windows and have three windows.

A combination of three or more angled windows make up our classic and iconic bay and bow windows that offer...

If you have ever owned a wooden home, you may have had to deal with rotten wood. The fact is, it isn’t as hard as many seem to think. The first step is to identify the problem area and ascertain how much wood you actually need to repair. The area needing repair seen most often is the bottom foot or so of the exterior wall, and sometimes under windows where moisture has seeped in. Other areas that seem to rot quickly is the chimney where it meets the roof, and exterior corners, where rain has the best chance to wash over it. Rotten wood can occur anywhere in your home, so be vigilant against moisture getting behind the wood through seams and cracks. Keep these problem areas trouble free by caulking every few years.

Once you decide the width and length of the area to be replaced, use a chalk line to mark the lines you will need to follow with your circular saw. Remember that the plywood needs to end at the center of a stud. Set the blade depth for the thickness of the wood,...

lol, thezster... thanks.

Handyhousewife: perhaps you could snap some pictures from the exterior of the window. The ones from the inside seem to only show the top of the sill, and it's hard to picture how the rest looks. Get a closeup picture of the sill from the outside, perhaps at the mullion (the point where one bay window meets another.)

From the looks of it, you have a 25 year old wood window (perhaps an Anderson or Weathershield) that's just about had it. The part that is rotton is your sill, which is probably one solid piece that runs the length of each window, and it's about 6" wide- it goes underneath the glass, butting up to the drywall on the inside, and as you can see the outer 2" is rotting.

Occasionally, the front part of the sill is a seperate piece which can be removed, and another one can be fabricated on a table saw. Often, though, the rot extends back underneath the window, so that just replacing the front 2" is not enough. More pictures...

Danny Lipford: Rain and snow can harm your home in a number of ways, especially if you have an overhang—like this—that allows water to drip down and splash back against the doorway. Now it’ll cause mold and mildew, like you see here, but even worse, water seeps under the door frame and can damage areas just like we had here.

Now, we’ve already repaired it, not by replacing all of the damaged pieces, but replacing some and repairing the others with special exterior wood putty. The first thing we did is to remove the brick mold.

I start removing the brick mold by first cutting the caulking with a razor knife, then prying it off the frame with a flat bar. Now for its replacement, I used a vinyl brick mold that’s resistant to any type of water damage.

I predrilled all of the holes for the nails, then used a galvanized finish nail to secure the new molding to the frame. Then I cleaned out all of the damaged area and installed a piece of folded wire mesh using several...

To repair plywood boats is, fortunately, fairly easy.

Plywood boatbuilding, both with and without epoxy has been a popular method for boat building for quite a few years and it has produced many sturdy and beautiful boats.

Unfortunately, as with any method, there comes a time when repairs are necessary.

Fortunately, the procedure is not that difficult.

Looking for Marine Grade Plywood?

“When a great adventure is launched with a powerful thrust, fatigue in the muscles and doubts in the mind are swept away by a fullness that moves life along like a breath from the depths of the soul.”
(Bernard Moitessier)

If you suspect that a non-marine grade of ply has been used you should consider replacing the whole sheet rather than patching.

But don’t despair, it is actually quite a simple job to replace complete sheets.

On a small boat replacing the entire hull bottom is as easy...

Some people want to know how much new replacement windows & doors will cost before they invite someone into their home for a presentation, inspection and estimate.

Maybe this is you.

And if this is you; We certainly understand.

But the fact of the matter is this.

Nobody can provide you with a fair and accurate estimate over the phone.

They must first see and inspect your property with an expert set of eyes.

As you can imagine, it is easy to estimate the cost of just windows alone.

But when you add installation into the price things can get complicated…fast.

Anyone who estimates a job over the phone which includes installation is taking a big risk.

Because they never “really know” what circumstances they’ll be dealing with. And these circumstances make Over-the-Phone estimates a challenge – and unreliable.

There are many potential issues that can impact installation costs.

Obstructions ...

Bay windows, when properly installed and insulated, can last for years without much maintenance. But bay windows, because they are so large, can have problems that other windows flush with the walls do not have. Two common bay window problems are sagging and rotting wood.

How to Repair Bay Windows with Sagging Problems

These windows, because of their sheer size and weight, can sometimes sag, making it impossible to open the windows. To get bay windows back into place, use two hydraulic jacks in each corner of the window. Lift slowly to avoid any stress on the window.

Make sure you support the jacks on planks (2 x 8s are fine), so the jacks don't shift or sink into the ground. Perform the process slowly until the window is about one-eighth inch above your desired window height. You will then want to support the window from the top with a few structural metal brackets (wood is also okay to use). Once the brackets are secured, carefully lower the...
