I want to replace the trim kit in my shower without replacing the valve

Sumi Mehta: how do i take the faceplate off...i got everything to come off and I am about to change the valve/cartridge, but now can't even get the faceplate off.

Armchair Builder: FYI: Many of the tub/shower or just shower faucets sold in stores come two different ways: 1) with valve and 2) without the valve. If you want just the pretty stuff on the outside of the wall, you need just the "trim kit".

Armchair Builder: Hey Evelyn. Congrats on the new bath. Here are some suggestions for determining the faucet manufacturer and type. 1) Look for manufacturer label on the faucet...Moen for example usually has the name somewhere on it, 2) Determine whether you have full control of water flow (i.e. volume) or just temperature control (this helps determine valve type 3) Take a photo and send it to the manufacturer asking for the model number (and let them know about flow control from 2 above & give approximate age of faucet).
For our last remodel, I sent a photo to Moen and...

Replacing your shower and tub trim can make a world of difference in the look of your bathroom without a major renovation. A new trim kit will come in a number of different finishes, so you will to really make your bath shine. You can replace the handles, escutcheon (trim around the handles), tub spout, shower head and arm, without replacing the valve and piping.

You will need to know the manufacturer of your faucet in order to get the appropriate replacement parts. Most major companies have their name stamped right on the escutcheon and make it easy to find. Some may be a no-name brand, that is not as easy, but a universal kit may work.

If you cannot figure out which brand you have, take off the handle and escutcheon and take them to your local plumbing store for some help. It may be a good idea to take these parts with you even if you know the brand as there are still differences between models from the same manufacturer.

The witching hour—you’re trying to get some much needed sleep but that drip, drip, dripping noise in the shower faucet is becoming too much of a challenge that you just want to shut the main water valve for the house entirely. The problem of your leaking bath faucet could be the shower valve, which for the non-handymen, is the device that controls the flow of water from the pipes to the shower head. The valve has many uses, for instance, a shower control valve ensures that there are no uncomfortable baths or sudden changes in temperature. Meanwhile, a shower diverter valve creates an instant outlet so that water will directly flow through the shower head or hand held hose. Fixing a leaking shower can be as simple as making sure that the faucet is turned off completely, or it can be as complex as removing the old shower valve and replacing it with a new one. Valves and other plumbing tools are available on eBay in new conditions to help you achieve a good night’s sleep without the...

Not always, there is a standard shower valve that most handles will work for. it depends on what your set up is. As far as the shower head is concerned you should be able to put anything on.

As I'm standing at Home Depot looking at all the different shower valves on the display I wonder which one is the "standard" that all handles and trim fit on. The fact is unless you are replacing with it the same valve or in some cases the same brand all the trim plates and handles have to be changed.

*It TOTALLY depends on the brand and make of your faucet. You would have to determine what brand the faucet is(ex. Moen, Delta), The next move is to determine which model it is(ex. Moen Heritage, Delta Leland). Then you get their own catalogue # and determine what cover plate, handle and screws will fit onto your existing faucet, order them, and replace them. ALL FAUCETS AND THEIR PARTS ARE MADE DIFFERENTLY!!!*Cheers, QuiteSomething

Turn off the building's water-supply valve, usually located where the water-supply pipe enters the building. Open a hose bib or sink faucet until the water drains from the building's water pipes.

Remove the screws holding the shower or tub's handles to the valve stems with a Phillips screwdriver. If a trim cap covers the handle's screw, slip a slotted screwdriver between the cap's rim and the handle. Pry the cap off the handle with the screwdriver and remove the screw.

Pull each handle straight off its shower or tub's valve stem. If a handle will not slide off its valve stem, spray a small amount of light oil from an aerosol can into the screw hole. Wait five minutes, then pull the handle off the valve stem.

Slide each faucet handle's escutcheon off its valve stem. Remove the handles' trim tube, if equipped. Some shower and tub faucets use a trim tube that slides over the valve stem and into the escutcheon.

Turn the valve stem's packing nut, the...

Our 4 yr old Delta (model# 132900 ) works as you describe. It is stamped "Delta" on the trim plate and the handle, and the trim plate screw holes are at 1:00 and 7:00 (actually closer to 2:00 and 8:00, but not quite.)

Anyway, I would suggest taking both the trim plate and the handle off and take them with you to a big box store to match them up. The key is matching the holes on the trim plate, as well as the turning "stops" on the backside of the handle (so take the handle out of the package and look at the back of it closely).

If they don't match, try a real plumbing supply, since the trim plate holes and stops can be different even for the same brands. This is how it is with Moen. Sometimes I buy a trim kit from a plumbing supply, other times the big box version, and sometimes I even have to parts from each place to freshen up a bathroom. (If I want a shiny new Moen tub spout, it's almost the same cost at my local plumbing supply to buy the entire trim kit vs. the...

Let’s take a look into some of the usually unseen parts of a great shower. In this post we’re going to look at the shower valve and why you might replace it.

Maybe you’ve heard your friend or a plumber talk about a leaking shower valve or that one was required when building a new shower. Ever wondered what the heck are they actually talking about?

When people are talking about a ‘shower valve’ they are usually talking about one of the following;

a pressure balancing valve

a thermostatic valve / thermostatic mixing valve

a diverter valve or a transfer valve

Pressure balancing valves and thermostatic valves are involved in controlling and maintaining the water temperature of your shower. While diverter valves and transfer valves are involved in directing or re-directing the flow of your shower water from the shower head to the tub faucet (or to the hand-held shower head, etc).

Pressure-balancing valve

The most common type...
