Installing washer/dryer combo in kitchen

washer-dryer necessarily has a complex control panel and display to handle various options (2012)

A combo washer dryer (also known more simply as a washer-dryer in the UK) is a combination in a single cabinet of a washing machine and a clothes dryer. It should not be confused with a "stackable" combination of a separate washing machine and a separate clothes dryer.

Combination washer dryers are popular amongst those living in smaller urban properties as they only need half the amount of space usually required for a separate washing machine and clothes dryer, and may not require an external air vent. Additionally, combination washer dryers allow clothes to be washed and dried "in one go", saving time and effort from the user. Many washer dryer combo units are also designed to be portable so it can be attached to a sink instead of requiring a separate water line. Washer dryer combinations are a type of home appliance that...

LG may have created the ultimate space saving laundry solution in the All-In-One Washer and Dryer. From LG’s site:

Perfect for people who want to do laundry at home but don’t have an external venting source which conventional dryers require. This unit runs on standard voltage electricity and is great for placement in closets; it’s also a good solution for apartments, businesses and vacation homes where there may be space constraints.

Since it doesn’t need to be vented and it washes and dries your clothes, it appears to be a great small-space appliance. I did a quick search of Amazon and there are a few similar options from other companies. Has anyone had the chance to do a load of laundry in one of these units? I’m interested in finding out how well it works. The load capacities seem ridiculously small, and I’m curious about its drying capabilities.

I ordered an LG washer/dryer combination unit, it''ll be here in a few days. At this time I am trying to plan out how to install it. I downloaded the manual and found some interesting things. When I bought this unit it was promoted as being able to be installed anywhere, no vent necessary, hookup to your kitchen sink, connects like a dishwasher, etc. Now that I look at the manual, I see that it only shows how to connect to conventional washer hookups, not under the sink splicing.

Below I've attached the instruction pages for both the water supplies and the drainage. My concerns are if I will be able to connect the water supply and drainage under my sink. FWIW, I already have the cold water tapped for filtered water, the hot water tapped for the dishwasher, and the drainage tapped for the dishwasher. I have also attached a picture of the plumbing under my sink. Notice the 3/8" taps that I used, I assume the LG will have a much larger hose and require larger taps under...

First, prepare the washer and dryer by removing all packing material and cleaning out the exhaust opening. If the unit is replacing an old one, clean out the wall exhaust opening. Likewise, place a bucket under the faucets extending from the wall, and flush out the system by running the water for a minute.

Position the stackable washer and dryer in its approximate location but with enough room to walk behind. Attach the flexible duct end to the dryer's exhaust opening. Use a screwdriver to secure the band clamp.

If not already present, insert a rubber washer into one end of the hot water hose. Thread the hot water hose onto the correct washer connection, typically labeled "H." Repeat the whole procedure for the cold water hose. Use pliers to tighten both connections.

Move the appliance as close to its final position as possible while still allowing for access to the back. Attach the hot water hose to the hot water faucet and the cold water hose to the cold...

As with all appliances, you'll find that the more features your washer and dryer offer, the higher the price. For both types of laundry appliances, you will find a big range between the high and low end of the price spectrum. Washing machines cost between $250 and $2,050; dryers cost anywhere from $200 to $1,750.

Clothes Washer Prices
An average top-load washer with capacity over 3 cubic feet, three main temperatures and multiple cycles, and a plastic tub, will cost between $275 and $450. The matching dryer will cost about the same, although gas dryers are always more expensive than electric dryers.

Features such as a stainless steel tub, Energy Star qualification, detergent or bleach dispenser and additional cycles can take you up to about $650 in a top-loading washer.

The most expensive top-loaders are those that use an alternative technology rather than an agitator to wash clothing. They cost anywhere from $800 to $1,300.

Buyers looking for a good washing machine often have the option of going for either stand-alone washing machines or washing machine and dryer combos.

Both have their advantages, although the decision to buy a washer combo depends on your usage whether one is more suitable for you than the other, and also of the size of your living space.

The price may also be a factor, since most washer dryer combos are more expensive than regular stand-alone units.

The basics of a washer combo

A washer dryer combo is a combination of a washing machine and a dryer in one unit. These are popular alternatives to larger, stand-alone units for those who live in cramped spaces such as apartments, dorm rooms, and other urban living...

Installing a stackable washer and dryer in the kitchen is not really complicated, but it does require a little thought and planning. Although there are some 120-volt units available, they are not very efficient. Most combo units require a 240-volt hook-up and you will need to have a professional electrician install a 240-volt, 30-ampere, 4-wire dryer circuit. The rest of the installation you will be able to do yourself.

Locating the Unit

The ideal place to locate a combo washer-dryer is against an outside wall and as close to the kitchen sink as possible. Locating the machines on an outside wall will make installing the hot and cold water feed lines, the drain and the vent a much simpler job. Now is the time to call in the electrician to install the dryer receptacle; while you are waiting on the electrician make up a list of the plumbing supplies that you will need and take to your home center.

For homes without a central laundry room, one suggested installation location for a washer dryer in one is in your kitchen underneath your countertop. Installing the washer dryer combo is not difficult if you are capable of performing do-it-yourself tasks on your own. Otherwise, it is recommended you hire a qualified contractor to do the work.

Measure the width of the all-in-one washer dryer and select a location where a cabinet is at least two inches wider — ideally next to the sink base cabinet. Carefully remove the countertop above the cabinet and remove the cabinet. Tap hot and cold water lines, and the drain pipe underneath the sink. Cut holes in the side of the sink base cabinet to run the hose connections from the appliance to underneath the sink, and attach them to the newly tapped lines. Slide the appliance in place, making sure there is at least one inch of clearance on both sides and sufficient clearance in the back. Connect the discharge hose and water hoses to the...

Hi all! We recently purchased an apartment. There's no venting, our apartment is small, so we think a ventless HE combo unit is our best option. I know they suck compared to separate units, but we don't have the space/money honestly. To keep it near the stack, we've decided we want to install the unit right next to our sink in the kitchen, taking up one of the lower cabinets. We're not sure where to go from there.

From the research I've done, we need a water hookup, as well as access to a standard electrical outlet. There aren't any outlets inside the cabinets (obviously), but there is an outlet above the cabinet in question, meaning there should be wiring available.

My question are as follows: who do we go to for the install? Do we need to talk to both an electrician and a plumber? Is this something a standard plumber could handle? The unit will be right next to the sink, so is there a possibility the plumber will be able to siphon water from there with minimal work,...

If you’re tired of trudging up and down from your basement—or worse, back and forth to the laundromat—you may be considering putting a washer/dryer in your apartment.

But before you start shopping for a washer/dryer or picking a good spot in your apartment to install it, you need to get your board's permission. Here's a checklist of questions and answers to help you confirm that you're able to install that washer/dryer in your apartment and figure out what type of appliance you can get.

Will my co-op allow a washer/dryer?

Many New York buildings (rentals, co-ops and condos) won’t allow washer/dryers, period. Some co-ops (and condos) will allow them on a case-by-case basis. Though it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask, be prepared for a negative answer based on the age and plumbing conditions specific to your building. (FYI, here's what can happen if you go ahead without permission.)

There’s often a logical reason why these appliances aren’t...
