Lawn mower runs for a few seconds then stops

VERY COMMON problem with gas engines.

I recommend starting all your gasoline using machine ever month or two. Let them run a few minutes. Same with cars/trucks.

Start you r car/truck every couple months and drive forward and backward several feet as well.

If you have a gas shutoff valve, turn it off and run engine till all gas is out of carb before storing.

Gas turns to a hard lacquer is sitting too long. remove air cleaner covers, Pour some real good (strong/thorough) carb cleaner in carb and leave sit over nite. If that doesn't work, do it another nite. If not working yet, you may have to take carb off and open it up. Be careful there are little tiny parts in...

I have often had this exact symptom on an old beast of a mower. It was also a Tecumseh, but not sure the engine brand really matters. In my case, it was water in the fuel which settled to the bottom of the carburetor float bowl. I could do a quick fix by just loosening the nut fitting on the bottom of the bowl enough to let the water and then some gas drain out. Water is heavier than gas so it sinks below the gas. Usually that was enough to solve the problem. A better fix is to remove the carb and clean it, and make sure that the tank is as clean as you can get it too.

Yes, fuel with alcohol is a problem, probably explains why I had this problem once or twice a year.

Our local mower repair shop will do a quick turn-around on carb cleaning / rebuild if I bring in the carb removed from the mower. In busy season, I get the carb back the next day. If they're slow, I can pick it up in the afternoon. Maybe that's just because they like me, it's certainly not because I'm a...

Q: I read in one of your answers that if there is voltage to the center lead of the voltage regulator with the ignition on, then the regulator is bad. If this is right does it hold true for a 420 John Deere?

A: Yes that would also be true on an Onan John Deere 420.

Q: I have a Craftsman 22 hp, Brigg and Stratton engine. It starts but runs really rough unless you pull the choke out a little. I am not sure if it is good to run like that. When you idle down it is almost like the engine goes on and off. You have to let it idle for 30 seconds before turning it off according to the book, if not it back fires. The seat safety switch seems okay.

A: Because you have to run at part choke it sounds to me like you have a carburetor problem. You should rebuild the carburetor

Q: I've got a John Deere 216 garden tractor which I bought used from a farmer who apparently collected such things (he had 5 for sale!. It starts fine since we dropped a new starter and...

In this instructable I will show you how to repair a lawn mower engine, and how to finally kill those gremlins which have been lurching in its bowels. Of course there is now way I can tell you every single problem that could happen to your engine, so I will tell you the major parts of the engine, and how to repair them. I am not a trained mechanic. What I have learned comes from years of reading, and much trial and error. Hopefully from that I can teach you how to become more of an independent person, and maybe save you a few bucks

Before you do anything with the lawnmower you should disconnect the sparkplug. This will leave no chance of the engine starting with you working on it. It is better to loose a few second than loose a few fingers! It is also be a good idea to wear some working gloves, because engines can be very sharp and dirty which will give you an infection. Eye protection should also be worn so that gasoline and bits of metal cannot end up in you...
