The humming you hear is the contactor coil trying to pull the relay in.... that tells us the thermostat is calling. Thats good. There is a strong possibility that you simply need to turn on the disconnect. That will supply full power to the unit. That may be as simple as putting the disconnect fuse/plug back in.

If the unit does have full power but is still not starting, take the access panel off the condensing unit. Look at the big plastic component that looks like a big "H". Thats the contactor. Push the center post in. If the compressor & fan start, but stop when you let off, call a pro to replace the contactor. If the unit will not start, and you know it has full power to it, look at the tin can looking component. That is the dual run capacitor. If it is at all swollen, or misshapen, its bad. -you guessed it; call a pro.
If the contactor and capacitor are both good, its time to start ohming out the fan & compressor. -yep; call a pro.

Hope these troubleshooting...

Hello DIY forums!

I've been trying to troubleshoot my AC unit and I've found a lot information in my searches around here but nothing specifically that matches my problem. So anyways here we go!

Yesterday the upstairs AC unit failed to keep the house cool. Some things I noticed though, the outdoor unit fan would turn on and there was a loud buzz coming from the unit.. It didn't sound healthy, so I turned it off for a few hours at the thermostat. When I turned it back on some hours later it started cooling the house, but when I did turn it back it the outside unit clicked on and clicked off a couple of times before it finally clicked back on and stayed on.

This morning, the unit failed to keep the upstairs cool, but the fan was still running outside with that same loud buzz.

After reading around on here and the rest of the internet, I took the capacitor out and took it to a local HVAC place with the intention of replacing it. They tested it at the store...

If your air conditioner won’t work at all, there’s a good chance that something is amiss with its compressor. This may sound like dire news, and it possibly is, but compressors can often be repaired. Before jumping to any conclusions, you should do a little troubleshooting to try and pinpoint the source of the problem. Keep in mind that there’s only so much that an everyday homeowner can do in this regard. Many of the tests that need to be done can only be handled by professionals.

What is an AC Compressor?

An air conditioner can’t work without a functioning compressor. On standard residential air conditioning systems, the compressor is typically located in the outdoor unit. As its name implies, the compressor’s main function is compression. In an air conditioner, it works by compressing cool, low-pressure, gaseous refrigerant until it is hotter and has achieved a much higher pressure. From there, the gaseous refrigerant is squeezed into the condenser. When...

It Doesn't Matter At All

Hey you've been hanging on

To a dream

Hoping that time

Would turn your fear away

But you must stop

Take a look around

What do you see

Do you see me

People say that I'm crazy

(People call me a fool)

They've got no business to talk

(They've got no reason at all)

I'll take a chance with you Baby

It doesn't matter at all

It doesn't matter at all

It doesn't matter at all

Hey you're living in a world

Where reason is a waste of time

Nobody talking

The atmosphere is cold

Touching you deeply

Way down inside you

Do you wanna be loved

Say you wanna be loved

People say that I'm crazy

(People call me a fool)

They've got no business to talk

SOURCE: RV Air Conditioner Keeps Tripping Circuit Breaker & Compressor

It sounds like the unit was miswired at the factory, since when the A/C is "off" at the thermostat, there should be no calls for cooling or for the fan to run.

You also stated the most puzzling issue, with the breaker turned "off" the same thing happens. This shouldn't happen at all, when the power breaker is turned off, there should be no power being supplied to the unit and it shouldn't be able to do anything. Very strange indeed, but likely a major error done when the RV was manufactured, or some wiring in the loom has somehow become shorted and is supplying power from another breaker/source.

I think a call to the manufacturer is in order since there is no easy solution aside from possibly rewiring the A/C circuit.

Not sure when your RV was made, but definately time to call the manufacturer and break out the wiring schematic in an attempt to isolate and resolve the...

It is hot, you guys. As in HOT. I am sure everyone can feel it, but being eight months pregnant, having 3 little kids to run after, and living in a house without an AC… Well, boil me to death and let’s just be done with it!

So, what’s a hot mama to do if she does not have $3000 to buy an AC system for her house?

Why, look for a cheaper alternative, of course. As in much much much cheaper, we are talking here.

$20 and change. Yes! That is in the budget.

I watched some cool videos on YouTube for how to make a homemade AC unit and at the end, made up kind of my own simple design that doesn’t require the use of a drill or any power tool. Keep it simple man.

Here is how to make a Homemade AC unit…

You will need…

A cooler. Not too small, you want at least one, preferably two 1 gallon bottles to fit in there. This cooler cost me $7 at Wall Mart.

A 6” fan. This one cost me $10 at Wall Mart.

And two 1 1/2” elbows that cost me...

In this episode of The Handyguys Podcast we discuss air-conditioning.

Air-conditioning is not something the typical handyguy or girl is familiar with. We turn it on and expect it to work as designed. What can we do if it doesn’t cool? Are there specific things to look for before calling in a pro to troubleshoot?

With high humidity and soaring temperatures this summer, the last thing you want to deal with is a broken air conditioner. But when an old air conditioning system fails, you will be faced with the tough and often expensive decision of whether to repair the existing system or purchase a new one.

Repairs on an existing unit may be the least expensive immediate option, but could cost you more in the long run since older systems tend to break down over and over and consume more energy and drive up cooling bills more than newer systems. However, there are times when simple repairs can prolong the life of an air conditioner, making immediate replacement a...

Hi everyone, I need help with my laptop, not sure what's wrong with it...

It's a Gateway NV7310u
I've had it for just over three years.

So one morning I opened my laptop and pressed a key to turn it back on from hibernating (I think that's what it's called) and the lights (above the keyboard) that usually come on when it comes back up flashed quickly and then the computer made a sound like it was *going* to turn on but then did nothing (black screen)... And I could hear the fan going on but very low, not as loud as it usually is. Battery was fully charged, and both the lights were on for the battery and the power...

I googled this issue and saw a lot of similar problems but there were different answers as to what the problem was and nothing I read made it any clearer to me. I tried taking the battery out and holding the power button down and putting it back in, etc. That worked maybe 2 or 3 times but that's it.

There's also another issue that I...

Dear Shopper,

I've installed many Hampton Fans. I believe what you are describing is a problem that is not uncommon at all.

Something to check before you unstall this beautiful fan you just spent a hour installing to return it for a new one.

1. When you turn on fan does the fan make a humming noise (and the lights turn on) ?

If yes then the first thing I would recommend is turning the power OFF to the fan
(I.E. find the breaker(or fuse) that the fan is on and turn it off at the box.)

After the power is off Go through all the wires that you connected. Most updated electronic devices for consumers use devices call "quick connects" Quick connects are plastic connectors that splice wires together with out the need of strippers and wire nuts. They save a huge amount of time and are great however I have noticed in my experience that sometimes if by manufacturing errors or through install strains sometimes those wires that are...

I've been too numb to understand

Я была слишком скована, чтобы всё понять,

I'm just a victim of the weapon in my hand

И собственноручно нанесла себе удар.

So many casualties of love

Любовь требует слишком больших жертв,

But I've been bulletproof, I'm staring at the sun

Но я непоколебима, мой взгляд обращён к солнцу.

I was the one you took home

Я была той, с которой ты уезжал домой,

Never a flame to burn slow

Пламя страсти всегда разгоралось быстро,

But I was hoping you'd see me a different way

Но я надеялась, что ты увидишь меня другой.

So many bodies I've touched

Я прикасалась ко многим,

Crashing around me like dust

Но воспоминания о них обернулись прахом,

You are the realest thing I've ever had to fake

Ты – самый настоящий, и мне не нужно притворяться.

Note: For a desktop computer, see our computer does not turn on page.

Troubleshooting a laptop that does not turn on or boot can be a lot harder than a desktop because of the inability to remove hardware from the laptop. Below are troubleshooting steps to help identify what may be keeping your laptop from turning on.

Connect the power cable

If your laptop is only running on battery power, connect the AC adapter to make sure a dead battery is not the cause of the problem. Ensure the adapter cord is correctly plugged in on both ends.

Also, if your laptop is using an AC adapter, make sure the cord going into it and the cord coming from it are securely connected.

Disconnect from docking station

If your laptop is connected to a docking station, disconnect it and try turning the laptop on to verify the docking station is not the cause of the issue.

Remove any external peripherals

While troubleshooting this issue, disconnect...

The central AC in our apartment is not working effectively in the summer; we are running the AC continuously for 14 hours a day to keep the temperature below 80 degrees. As you can imagine, our electric bill has become a huge problem.

(Edit: Please note the maintenance staff are incompetent and management doesn't care about our problem at all -"getting the central AC fixed" is not an option, if it's even fixable)

I bought a used portable AC unit (around 11,000 BTU, rated at 12 amps) and plugged it into an arbitrary outlet near a window, because I was always able to do so with a similar AC at my parent's house. The portable unit worked great for a couple of minutes and then tripped the circuit breaker, which also shut off my computer.

After a lot of testing I have determined that all of the outlets in the two bedrooms and in the living room run off a single 15-amp circuit (which was 'helpfully' labeled "lighting" in the circuit box). This rules out every outlet...

Countless people complain about Acer laptops that won’t turn on!

Do you have an Acer laptop that won’t turn on at all, or at least from time to time?
No matter how many times you push the power button, the laptop does not power up…

———————————————–

You can leave the computer and come back to it hours later, only to find that it still won’t start up. Perhaps you notice a blinking, amber-colored light every time you press that infuriating power button. Have no fear, the answer (hopefully) to your long-awaited solution is here…

1.) Make sure your battery isn’t completely dead. As in–all the way dead, to where it can never charge again. Assuming your battery still works, continue on…

2.) Remove your battery from your Acer laptop. Yes, I know I just told you to make sure the battery works in number 1 but there is a reason for this. I promise!

3.) Next, unplug the power adapter from the wall AND from the computer .When your Acer laptop...

Electricity makes our modern world possible. Without it, we would have no cell phones or dishwashers or

air conditioners

. But it can be a frightening foe when it starts to misbehave. Many homeowners notice that their lights flicker when their air conditioner turns on, prompting them to call an electrician or air conditioner professional in a panic. Does that flickering mean there’s something wrong with the power or the air conditioner?

When the Lights Go Dim

If you think of the electricity in your home’s wiring like the water in your plumbing, it can make it easier to understand why flipping on the air conditioner can make the lights dim briefly. Like the water in your pipes, there is only so much electricity to go around at any given time, especially in older homes with smaller electrical mains.

When you turn on a high-demand appliance like a modern air conditioner, the initial power cost can put a massive drain on the available electricity....

Some have expressed an interest in driving high powered loads, more than 10A or so, beyond the capabilities of the H-Bridge driver transistors. To this end I developed several high powered driver circuits using relays, (actually their almost the same circuit as in the relay trackers Relay, Led1, Led2).

Ok, lets get serious here, there is no earthly reason to require high powered motors. The Sun moves very slowly so low power motors with high gear ratios work best.

relaydc1
RelayDC1
Relay circuit that uses DC relays. The DC motor in this case is a permanent magnet DC type which is reversible. The capacitors are used to prevent relay chatter. The value must be tested with your relays. The value may range from 10µF to as much as 1000µF depending on the relay characteristics.

I basically don't recommend using relays or contactors in DC current solar tracker applications. The tracker will be energizing them thousands of times each day. This tends to...
