Electrical ceramics, like all other ceramics, consist of randomly oriented small crystallites, bonded together by either a glassy matrix or by close interlocking of one or several crystalline phases. The atomic structures of the crystalline and glassy phases determine the physical properties of the finished ceramic.

Raw Materials

Conventional raw materials for ceramic production are earthy, natural minerals, used in finely-ground form, such as clays, tale, feldspar, and flint. These are used for the production of electrical insulators, often carefully selected and refined from gross impurities by flotation or filtering processes. In many instances, these naturally occurring minerals are replaced by synthesized inorganic compounds, which are prepared from various oxides. This may be done by melting, recrystallizing, and grinding, or more frequently by high-temperature solid-state reactions.
