I have a kitchen finished with IKEA Metod system and a narrow, 45 cm wide non-IKEA dishwasher. Apparently the IKEA dishwasher front does not fit the typical dishwasher - Metod front's dimensions are 45x80 cm, while recommended ones for a typical dishwasher are 45x(71 - 75) cm. If you follow the dishwasher's manual and mount the Metod front on in, you will not be able to open it (see the image).

There are two recommended solutions:

cut the IKEA front in two pieces and mount them in a way where one is static and the other one is attached to the door. I don't want to do it due to aesthetics. replace dishwasher with IKEA one - they have a sophisticated hinge system where front slides up while opening door. I would like to avoid this solution if possible, because IKEA's dishwasher is very expensive and really noisy in compare with competition.

I tried my luck with a DIY solution using drawer slides - I...

But that's the end result. Before that we needed to find out what people's kitchen dreams were (as well as their frustrations), what recipes they liked to cook, and how might kitchens look in the future – a journey that took us around the world.

Our biggest ever kitchen change

It just takes a flick through a few TV channels, or a glance at a social media feed to notice our appetite for making and sharing food is growing. Since lifestyle trends change, it made sense that our kitchens should change too. With the ambition to help as many people as possible have a kitchen they'd love to be in, the change turned into one of the biggest projects ever done at IKEA. “This is our biggest ever kitchen change, so it's fair to say we were very keen to get it right,” says METOD technician Klas-Ola Nilsson. “We wanted the new kitchen to be more affordable, easier to install and to suit people all over the world.”

Research from around the world

Since Ikea has started the new Metod kitchen line a problem was born.
The new kitchen doors are about 80 centimeters in length, but most dishwashers can’t be mounted with doors that have a total length of more then approx. 72-75 centimeters . Without the Adapt-R the dishwasher door can not be fully opened or fully closed.
The Adapt-R 2.0 is compatible with practical every dishwasher in an Ikea kitchen. The Adapt-R 2.0 is a universal adapter which can be installed on most common size dishwashers on both 45 and on the 60cm wide.

The adapt-r slide mechanism fits on all brands dishwashers from ATAG till Zanussi. When you need more information about the slide mechanism please let us know!

Has anybody fitted a Metod kitchen without using an ikea branded dishwasher?

Looking around online, there's a common problem due to the doors being 800mm tall in that if you have the dishwasher at the normal height (butted up to the underside of the worktop) then the overhang at the bottom of the door is too great and it hits the dishwasher before you can fully open the door.

Currently considering solutions.

The official ikea one is to have the bottom 200mm of the door made from a drawer front which hinges as the dishwasher opens.

I dont really want that as it'll look wierd, thinking of installing the dishwasher low enough that the overhang at the bottom of the door isn't a problem, then put some wood under the worktop to take up the gap and to give something to attach the top of the dishwasher to.

Anybody come across this...

Materials: 1x METOD cabinet with 140cm height, 1x MAXIMERA drawer 10cm height, rest of drawers at your own discretion

Usually the kitchen countertop height is fixed and can only be varied by adjusting the legs a few centimeters. With about 2 meter body height I needed something higher to avoid bending forward and hence back pain. So I created my own elevated workplace in the kitchen. The rest of the kitchen has the regular height to fit the parts, which are only available in regular sizes: The stove, the dishwasher, my girlfriend.

I can only speak for the european kitchen system called METOD (SEKTION in America).

The regular height of the kitchen is about 92cm (8cm legs + 80cm cabinet + 4cm countertop), the elevated workplace will be 102cm (8cm legs, 90cm cabinet, 4cm countertop). Since there is no cabinet with that height I had to buy the next bigger one with 140cm and cut the 50cm off. I had to use 10cm steps to perfectly fit the additional drawer...

I’ve had to bid a fond farewell to a loyal friend this week after an 18 year close working relationship. We’ve been through thick and thin, long days and piles of cardboard, missing bits and too many legs. Faktum has been a stalwart since my very first property, many client homes and virtually all of our rentals, it’d probably be safe to say I’ve designed & installed over forty kitchens using those chunky white boxes and quite possibly used every style of door Ikea’s ever produced. Bye bye Faktum, it’s been fun and you’ve been a star but it’s time for a change. No longer will I be able to design a kitchen without even referring to the brochure, knowing every combination, height, depth and unit. I’ve got to make a new friend named Metod.

And guess what, I’ve already designed and bought one! A mini Metod this week, aided ably by Glen in Ikea Ashton and it was very exciting if a little mind blowing, apparently Ikea stopped counting when they got to 400,000 combinations....

DM had her Ikea kitchen fitted in July, but the Bodbyn range. Internal Bosch dishwasher attached to kitchen door with the Behjalplig fixtures.

Within a week it had unclipped at the bottom, went to Ikea and the lady phone the fitters and he said there has been an issue with then.

The kitchen wasn’t fitted by Ikea, but they sent out a fitter to have a look. He said that the left and right rails were the wrong way so swapped them, all seem to be ok.

Again within a week it had come away again.
Again went to Ikea and they’ve given us a new Behjalplig fittings, but we haven’t changed them over yet.

It was when I was googling problems with Ikea kitchen and outsourced dishwashers that I stumbled on this thread.

We to will be showing the problems people are having too. Hope they finally sort it...

The IKEA product range is wide in several ways. First, it's wide in function: you'll find everything you need to furnish your home, from plants and living room furnishings to toys and whole kitchens. Second it's wide in style. The romantic at heart will find just as much as the minimalist. And finally, by being coordinated, the range is wide in function and style at the same time, and at all times. No matter which style you prefer, there is something for everyone.

Anybody can make a good-quality product for a high price, or a poor-quality product for a low price. But to make good products at low prices, you need to develop methods that are both cost-efficient and innovative. That is why at IKEA we approach things a little differently.

This is Part Two of Kellbot's DIY IKEA Kitchen project. For an overview of the design and planning process, check out How we DIYed our IKEA Kitchen Remodel.

I consider myself an IKEA veteran. I have assembled dozens, if not hundreds, of pieces of IKEA furniture over the last 30 years. I am one with the Allen wrench. So when I saw the raised eyebrows when I told the IKEA employees I'd be installing my kitchen myself, I knew it was going to be work.

"Wow," said one IKEA Kitchen employee. "I have a bed that I've been putting off assembling because it came with three bags of hardware. But you're doing a whole kitchen? That's inspiring."
Aw, thanks!
"You must be really handy!"
Heh, kind of I guess?
