Portable air conditioner exhaust

In the past, we and other reviewers have grouped classes of portable air conditioners by their cooling capacity. More recent feedback indicates that that's not truly helpful, and we describe why below. Instead, you should consider whether you want a portable air conditioner that has one hose to the outside world, or two.

Types of Portable Air Conditioners

Single-Hose Portable Air Conditioner

A single-hose portable air condition exhausts hot air to the outside, but draws air to be cooled from the room itself. However, as experts at TheSweethome.com, YourBestDigs.com and elsewhere point out, this produces a negative pressure that actually draws warm air into the room through doors, around windows, etc., reducing efficiency. On the plus side, single-hose units are typically the least expensive type of portable air conditioner, and tend to be less bulky.

Dual-Hose Portable Air Conditioner

To eliminate the negative pressure effect and improve cooling...

Two Methods:Venting a Portable Air Conditioner through a WindowVenting a Portable Air Conditioner When a Window is Not AvailableCommunity Q&A

Portable air conditioners are a convenient alternative to window-mounted air conditioners because they are quick and easy to install, and can be moved from room to room. Portable air conditioners work by chilling warm room air using refrigerants, and exhausting the hot air that is a by-product of this process out of the room through a hose. [1] In order for your air conditioner to work, you must ensure that this hot air is successfully vented out of the room, preferably through a window to the outside. [2] This guide will teach you how to properly install and vent a portable, single-hose air conditioner through a window, and offer alternative suggestions if a window is not...

Did You Know?
Compared to window air conditioners that have an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 10, portable units manage about half, with an EER of 5 or 6.

Portable air conditioners are units that can be transferred from one room to another. This gives them an edge over the traditional cooling platforms. However, what they do require is a venting outlet, which can either be a window or a wall. Once the unit has been installed in the room, a suitable outlet can be selected and the vent positioned over it. Here are some FAQs regarding portable air conditioner venting.

1. Do portable air conditioners require outside venting? Is it possible to use a portable air conditioner without a vent?
All air conditioners need to vent hot air from a room. However, the hot air need not be vented outside a window. It can be vented into a room, like a storage one, where high temperatures aren't an issue. Portable air conditioners require a vent to function properly. Moreover,...

All air conditioning systems require a connection to the outside to remove heat from an area. With central air conditioning and window units, the system transports the heat to the evaporator coils outside using refrigerant. With the portable unit, the evaporator coils are inside the home. A fan pushes air through the coils and vent to the outside.

Air is less efficient at transporting heat than refrigerant. This makes portable air conditioners less efficient at cooling than either window units or central cooling systems.

Portable air conditioners are small units on wheels that allow the owner to move them to the desired location for use. Once in location, the hose connects to a port on the back of the air conditioner. The easiest way to exhaust the system is to connect the hose to a sliding window using the small expanding panel the venting kit supplies. For casement windows, owners often choose a plexiglass panel to replace the window glass for venting. However, the...

Before you finalize your decision on portable air conditioners, decide whether you want one with a single exhaust or dual exhaust. Each has its own benefits, and what you buy will affect your utility bills. Here’s what you need to know about both, so you can buy a unit that will work well for cooling your apartment:

Single Exhaust Portable Air Conditioners

A single hose or single exhaust portable air conditioner uses one hose to cool the air inside a room. If you were to open up one of these and examine the inside, you would find a compressor, which is used to remove heat from the air. The hot air is passed through the hose again to the outside, cooling the room. Each time air passes through the portable air conditioner unit, a small percent of air from the room is reduced and negative air pressures is created. Hot air from other rooms in the house will try to replace this “lost” air, and the unit has to work even harder to cool the room. This is one of the reasons...

Beating the heat in a room or building without a central cooling system is a lot easier once you know how to vent a portable air conditioner. These AC units operate using the same technology as conventional air conditioners, but they are designed for mobility. They are generally lightweight or have wheels. While these air conditioners are generally used in situations without extensive refrigerant plumbing and ductwork, there is an opening at the back where the exhaust heat escapes that needs to be vented properly. Obviously if this heat is allowed to escape back into cool room, it will practically render the air conditioner useless. These units are most readily vented through windows but can be vented through walls, floors, or ceilings where necessary. All you need to know is how.

Step 1 - Determine Location of Exhaust Opening

As mentioned previously, the easiest and most logical location for a portable air conditioner exhaust opening is through a window. However, if...

I have a Sharp portable air conditioner, model number CV-10NH. We're coming up on its fifth season in regular use.

The exhaust hose is just falling apart and is unusable. I need a replacement for it, but Sharp wants to charge me $88 for a plastic tube with some wire in it.

$88 is ridiculous. I'm seeing that there are plenty of other replacement exhaust hoses for other brands of portable air conditioners, some as low as $30. They have the same dimensions as the one I have currently, 6" x 6" x 5'.

Is there any reason that I would HAVE to buy the Sharp replacement part? Or can I buy a cheaper hose with matching dimensions and be able to use it? I don't want to spend $30 on a useless hose, but I can't find any information about applicable cheaper alternatives.

Thanks for any...

If you want to keep cool without running an expensive portable air conditioner, get an economical ventless evaporative (swamp) cooler and save money now on running costs. If you just found this page, you’re in for some interesting reading, as this is the focus of this website.

Staying cool in hot weather indoors is not just a convenience, it’s a necessity in certain climates!

In Search of Affordable Cooling

In the past, the only effective way to chill the interior atmosphere to make it comfortable enough to live in was to employ a power hungry heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) monster. It cost a fortune to operate but provided the much needed respite from the searing heat outside.

Ordinary fans are OK but they only push hot air around the room, they don’t actually chill it in any way. You feel cooler in the breeze they create because the moving air evaporates the sweat on your skin, creating a drop in temperature as the sweat is...

Localized Cooling where it's needed most!

The E Z Cool Way!

The revolutionary, EZ-Cool high-velocity and high-volume outdoor cooling fans play a very important role in the evaporation rates in more humid climates. Since 1948, Texas Greenhouse Co. Inc, has been experimenting and mastering the art of evaporative cooling in the horticulture market. The EZ-Cool division of Texas Greenhouse has the luxury of borrowing from that invaluable experience to offer our customers the most functional, cutting edge technology available.

What is evaporative cooling?

Evaporative cooling was used indoors before conventional air conditioning was invented and is still used very much in the horticulture and agricultural industries as well as at many outdoor, sporting and social events. Small water particles evaporate rapidly absorbing heat (600calories of heat per gram of water). This cools the air up to 30...
