Redoing my roof: how should I redo my insulation?

If you're getting your roofing materials replaced and the roof decking exposed, you have a golden opportunity! What you could do is add several inches (4+", preferably 6+") of roofing polyiso over the exposed roof decking (no need to remove it unless it's rotten or moldy) before installing new underlayment and roofing. Use foil-faced polyiso for the top layer, then install vented ridge-to-eave purlins and cover that with foil-faced roof decking with the foil facing down. Then install the new underlayment and roof over that. Many roofers--including nearly all who do commercial jobs--will be familiar with this approach.

This will transform your roof into a "hot roof" with a radiant barrier and ventilation over the insulation, and the attic will be transformed into "interior" space, if that's something that would be desirable. you may actually have drips, it doesn't mean that you are going to see it. sometimes it can run down insides of walls, or make your attic insulation soggy and mouldy. you need to also inspect the inside of your attic to see that there is no water damage on the wood on the inside of the roof.

I am building a log house and am at the point of insulating my roof. It is a metal roof with 2x10 rafters. The guys I am hiring to insulate said I have a couple of options. Condensed fiberglass R-30 batts are out because they are special order and I can't get them for 2wks and the guys are coming next week. I could put 2x2 furring strips to create the 12" I need for air flow and do regular R-30. I could do spray foam. They said 1". and then do the regular R-30. This woul give me about R-37. Or I could do blown in fibergalss insulation. They said with it being condensed I could get R-38. My concern with the blown in is the lack of air space to prevent condensation. They said that with it so densely packed in the air space wouldn't be necessary. It seems everyone has their own opinion about how things should be done. Asking when to redo your site is like asking how often you should call your mom. Well, how often do you call her now? Is she happy with the amount you call her? Are you happy with it? In what ways could you both benefit from talking more or less? The answer completely depends on your situation and can’t be answered reasonably without much more information from you.

So back to answering the question. How often should you redesign your website? It depends. But it all comes down to your answer to the following question.

“Is my website continually producing satisfactory results?”

To the OP:

Don't let all the cautions from all of us scare you off the job. What they should do is make you realize a) roofing is hard physical work, b) it can be dangerous (fatal), and c) there's a lot you need to know about.

There is nothing technically difficult about the majority of roofing tasks. The key is getting yourself educated about them. Personally, I will and have tackled almost any home repair/maintenance/improvement job around the house that I'm pretty sure is within my physical abilities. I often have to learn on the job, but there are lots of good sources of information available. The library is certainly your first stop. The places that sell material supplies may also have some experienced people who can give good advice -- however, you'll also run across bozos that don't know what they're talking about -- and it's you're job to figure out who's who.

Depends if your roof need work other then a coat of paint. Money wise I think the answer is no, unless you do it yourself. The industry from my experience and my parents experience is that there's alot of dodgy applicators out there to make some easy cash and do less then average jobs. I thought I was using a good company...turns out they are no longer in business and we were taken for a ride...the company subbed out to a bunch of idiots.

in 5 years time does it end up looking the same?
mine had faded around the 4-5 year mark, and not just that it lost it's gloss, it faded 2 shades of colour...was charcoal and is now close to slate grey if I look at the colour chart we still have.

do they use a sealant also?
they should have, but I wasn't around when they did it...so I don't really know.

It's now 9 years since my roof was 'restored'. Great term that...don't expect restored means it will...

I was recently chatting with a neighbor who asked, " We love our 100 year old home. However, it sure is a drafty old place! We're interested in blowing insulation into the walls, what do you think Bob?"

Let me start by saying, if you live in an old house you are part of a large group of plaster dust lovers. I have great respect for and kinship with people choosing to live on tree-lined streets full of unique old homes with character.

Having said that, it's time for an old house reality check. If your goal is to continue loving your old house, make it energy efficient while keeping your costs down, then you absolutely don't want to blow insulation into the sidewalls.

One of the top reasons for exterior paint failure, termites and structural damage to old houses is loose cellulose or fiberglass insulation blown into the sidewalls. "Hey, wait a minute Bob, if we can't insulate the sidewalls, how can we afford to heat our old house?" That's a valid question but you...

I was about to launch into an article on insulating empty wall cavities in an older house when I realized that the topic is best broken down into two sections: a survey of the products you can use to insulate your wall cavities, and a discussion of installation techniques and methods. I'm just glad I realized that in the first paragraph as opposed to the fifth page. So this article will focus on insulation materials.

Important Note: In this article, I am only talking about insulating existing wall cavities in an older house. This article is not about wall insulation in new construction. I would've had to take a “No Country for Old Men”-style air gun to the head to tackle that large a topic in one post.
