Repairing wall around a plug socket

1

This is a simple repair that should only take a bit of time. The repair shouldn't be rushed so that the result is a patch that is hard to detect. Here is what you should do:

CAUTION must be used when working near electric wires and devices. It would be wise to shut off the breaker at the panel before attempting this repair!

Remove loose plaster sections (right side of receptacle) and brush out dust and debris.

Cover receptacle with masking tape.

Mix about 2 cups of plaster patch according to instructions and with a putty knife push into wall opening. NOTE: Work with the knowledge that the plaster patch will set in a few minutes. Stay focused and don't delay. Start along the outside edge of the opening pressing the patch enough to adhere to the wooden lathe and existing plaster.

You will need to apply a second layer for a smooth finish. Mix the same amount but add a teaspoon more of water. This will delay the hardening of the patch to allow...

There are currently 15 types of electrical outlet plugs in use today, each of which has been assigned a letter by the US Department of Commerce International Trade Administration (ITA), starting with A and moving through the alphabet. These letters are completely arbitrary: they don’t actually mandate anything.

Use our 'socket calculator'

Most people have extension leads in their homes, using 4-way bar adaptors to increase the number of appliances that they can plug into a wall socket.

However, although there is space to plug in four appliances, this does not mean it is always safe to do so.

You can avoid overloading sockets and risk of fire by following this simple advice:

Check the current rating of the extension lead before plugging appliances into it. Most are rated at 13 A, but some are rated at only 10 A or less - the rating should be clearly marked on the back or underside of the extension lead. If not, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions Never overload an extension lead by plugging in appliances that together will exceed the maximum current rating stated for the extension lead. This could cause the plug in the wall socket to overheat and possibly cause a fire. Use our overload calculator (below) to check if you’re exceeding the maximum load For an...

Even without any experience, most people can safely take the DIY route when a wall socket or light switch needs replacement. Having wire strippers and needle-nose pliers will help, but the job can be done without any special tools.

Call a professional electrician if you discover crazy wiring, excessive damage, or if you cannot successfully shut off power to the wall socket or light switch.

Replacing a Wall Socket

Here are the basic steps to change a wall socket, or electrical outlet receptacle:

Shut off power. Flip the breaker that controls the wall socket firmly to the off position and test to make sure power is off. You can plug in a small appliance to test for power, but to be safe you should use a voltmeter. Remove the outlet cover. It will pull off easily after you remove the two screws. Unscrew the wall socket from the receptacle. Pull the socket out; it will be dangling by the wires. Take pictures or make notes to remember the wiring. It can vary...

TESTING and REPAIRING PHONE LINES

You can't rely on the Phone Company to test phone lines for you.

They don't care whether your customer is happy or not!

Most analog ports on newer Phone Systems don't do a good job of emulating a real phone line.

Our testing devices are small, light, and inexpensive. They pay for themselves in the time you save diagnosing ONE problem, but you'll own them forever!

There's a pretty good chance that everything you need to know about fixing a customer's phone line or analog station port is on this page.

With this information and the results of your tests, you can do battle with the Phone Company. Without this knowledge and the results of the tests, the Phone Company will probably ignore you - whether it's their problem or not.

If you look through this page, read our free Technical Bulletins, and you already have a fairly good digital meter (over $50?), you can probably fix...

SLOTCAR TRACK BUILDING AND REPAIRING

By Ray "Old n Slo" Gardner

with very slight editing by Bob Herrick as noted.

If you only need to construct a flat, yet challenging 3, 4, or 6 lane road course, the next page shows a sample sketch of a relatively easy design that can be constructed on a flat surface. Start by constructing a durable platform of 2" x 4"s. The racing surface can be routed directly onto the table "top" but you must be careful where you locate the counter-sunk (we recommend sheet rock screws) fasteners so none fall where the slots would be located. This design has no banks no over-and-under "bridges just a fun design you have to drive by using the entire range of the controller. There is also another sheet which has numerous designs that can be built with any number of lanes. The vast majority of commercial layouts typically...

Repairing Magnatek RV Power Converter Repairing the Magnatek Power Converter

Note: This unit was in my Sierra 30 foot trailer

When spring came and I prepared to get my RV all un-winterized and ready to take out, I discovered that my trailer battery was nearly dead. Since it was new from just the year before, I thought I wasn t getting very good mileage on batteries but I thought I would do some other checking before indicting the battery as defective. First, doing some various voltage checks, I found that I had good 12 volts DC to my interior lights and to the voltage monitor on the control panel. Hmmmmm .. that s odd. That voltage was coming from the power converter 12 volt supply (although not from the converter's battery charging section).

Checking the cigarette lighter socket, it only showed 5 volts and I determined that this was coming directly from the battery which was, by then, in a near discharged condition. Although the trailer had been plugged in all...

The following instructions for fixing garage door springs are for do-it-yourself homeowners and for maintenance repair men who service their smaller commerical or industrial overhead doors. They are written to help the DIY homeowner and maintenance repair men replace a torsion spring that is mounted on one side of an anchor bracket above the middle of the garage door as pictured above. This is a right wind spring mounted on the left side of the spring anchor bracket. Springs mounted on the right side of the bracket are normally left wind. If you have two springs mounted above your garage door, see our standard torsion spring replacement tutorial.

Your cable drums and cables should look similar to those in the picture below. The next part beyond the end of the spring assembly is the cable drum. The drum is cast aluminum alloy 4" in diameter and 13" in circumference around the flat portion. Just beyond the cable drum is the end bearing plate. The cable unwraps off the back...
