TV antenna installation: How to ground

Television antennas are generally installed on top of buildings, which makes the entire structure susceptible to lightning strikes. In order to protect the building that the TV antenna is attached to, the antenna has to be grounded properly. Another danger of mounting a television antenna that is not grounded properly is the excessive static electricity build-up that is discharged to the base structure. Additionally, most city or local ordinances require TV antennas to be grounded in order to minimize fire hazards in residential structures.

How to Ground a TV Antenna

Step 1 – Pick a bolt to loosen on the TV antenna mast. Loosen the bolt by turning it clockwise three times with a wrench.

Step 2 – Remove paint or protective coating form the area around the base of the loosened bolt so that the grounding wire connection will directly touch the antenna base metal.

Step 3 – Tighten the bolt by turning it clockwise with a fastening wrench. Seal the parts of...

TV Antenna Installation (OTA DTv)
Contents -- Fundamentals | Antenna & Mast Installation | Grounding System | Tools & Parts List

Outdoor antennas must be grounded for best reception and protection against lightning strikes. Indoor and attic antennas do not need to be grounded. However, when an indoor antenna cable is longer than 30 feet, some people ground the antenna/mast because it might help reduce static electricity build up which reduces reception.

Antenna Restrictions Prohibited
Federal law prohibits restrictions (by governments, community and homeowners' associations, and other entities) that impair the installation, maintenance or use of antennas used to receive video programming. Masts higher than 12 feet above the roofline may be subject to local restrictions. The FCC's webpage OTA Reception Devices Rule has more details, also see the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations webpage Title 47, Subchapter A, Part 1,...

What is the best way to ground my Clearstream4 antenna? Should I use coax cable with an integrated separate ground wire, or run a separate wire? If so, what gage wire should I use? (I’m setting it on a tripod mount I purchased from you). Thanks! – From Steve in Fort Collins, Colorado

Hi Steve,

Grounding the coax cable with a coaxial lighting surge protector will protect your equipment from voltage surges created by nearby strikes but not from a direct strike. To protect yourself from a direct strike, attach a lightening arrester to the antenna mast. Connect #8 gauge wire to a copper clad ground rod driving it at least 4 feet into the ground.

We would also recommend checking your local electrical codes to make sure you are in compliance or even look into having a professional electrician advise and/or install for you. View this list of recommended antenna installers.

Manufacturers Using this Product

Designed for Analog and Digital Signals World Wide.

The Majestic UFO has a High Gain 28dB Amplifier built in the Antenna which is ground independant (does not need a ground plane) to amplify the TV signal immediately upon receiving it. This gives you a huge advantage over other TV antennas because now you have a very strong signal in the antenna that has not had any interference being induced when the signal is sent down the cable. Once the signal is sent down, because the signal is so strong we do not need to do much filtering or cleaning to give you excellent reception.

If you need a TV antenna with a grounded system, for example an RV, Motorhome, Caravan, Truck, Bus, Steel or Aluminium Vessel then you need to use our ANTRV01 which is specifically designed for ground dependant installations click here.

Stylish and very simple to install the Majestic UFO will pick up the picture you want when all the other antennas...

Sky 60 Antenna

- Review by: Sarantube

I purchased and installed a Sky 60 antenna outdoors. I live 80 miles and have a clear line of sight from the Los Angeles broadcast towers on Mt. Wilson. My TV picked up 151 OTA channels, of which I watch about 30. The antenna is very easy to set up but I did find to get the best reception does require directional pinpoint sighting. I have no officially cut the cord One of the best TV Antenna ever
