Using a off-the-shelf pressure gauge to measure water pressure

1

Pressure gauges commonly use a Bourdon tube. Bourdon tubes are a coiled metal tube and as the pressure increases, it forces the coil straight which then moves the needle. (think blowing a party horn, which causes it to unroll) The type of fluid (water/air) makes no difference to the tube, only the pressure exerted against the tube does. And since most of the tubes are made from bronze, copper or stainless water will not corrode it any faster than moist air from the compressor.

In all said, the air compressor gauge will most likely work without any issues.

But if you really want to get a water gauge, go to a pool supply store. They have pressure gauges for filters that are designed for water and use a 1/4 npt. They also have a nifty little ring on the outside where you can mark your normal pressure so it is easy to see if your pressure is low or...

It’s a good idea to test water pressure in the home a couple times per year as part of a plumbing maintenance checklist. Testing water pressure is quick and easy and all you need is a simple and inexpensive pressure gauge.

Having too much water pressure can do harm to basically all of the plumbing fixtures, and it can cause blowouts in flex lines or washing machine hoses which in turn can cause flood damage to the house.

Some people even have dedicated gauges hooked up somewhere in the water line so they can check the water pressure quickly and easily with just a glance. However, this isn’t necessary since it is so easy to connect a standard pressure gauge.

It’s a good idea to test water pressure even if you have a pressure regulator because it isn’t necessarily obvious when one fails. Testing water pressure occasionally can catch a problem with the pressure regulator before the high pressure can damage any plumbing. If your water comes from a city or...

There are two chief functions of a water pressure gauge: to obtain a static water pressure measurement and to obtain a flow rate.

Obtaining a static water pressure measurement

Step 1 - Switch off all taps

Firstly, switch off all taps and appliances so that there is no running water inside or outside the house. This includes taps, washing machines, dishwashers, sprinkler systems etc.

If you do not do this, then your measurement will be inaccurate.

Step 2 - Attach water pressure gauge

Screw your water pressure gauge onto your outdoor tap, hose end, or appliance connection and hand tighten.

An outside tap is typically your first test point, as this the outlet closest to the mains water supply.

How do I attach it?

If your water pressure gauge did not come with a hose then it should still have a threaded fitting.

This fitting screws on to the gauge's brass connection and, in turn, connects to the...

Statistics show that the inhabitants of a centralized water supply houses, especially on the upper floors, it is necessary at times to deal with low pressure in the water supply network. As a result, a variety of household appliances due to the low pressure refuse to work properly. In order to solve this problem, it is first necessary to measure the water pressure.

You will need:

gauge (it can be a mortise or cap, depending on whether you want to constantly monitor the water pressure or temporary), wrenches, pipe wrench, pliers, die, transitional nuts. If the gauge will be tie-in also requires a welder.

Instruction how to measure water pressure

Step 1:

When installing stationary gauge shut off the water supply of cold or hot water, depending on the pressure measurement of the object. Pick gauge with a maximum index of 10 kg / cm2 or 10 atm.

Step 2:

Determine the location of the pressure gauge mounted in the system - it must be...

Re: How can water pressure be measured in "m"

Imagine a column of water of a given height h and of area A. What is the pressure P felt under that column?

So:

P = W / A where W is the weight of the column of water.

And:

W = m g where m is the mass of water and g is the acceleration of gravity.

m = rho V where rho is the density of water and V the volume of water.

V = A h

Putting everything together:

P = (m g) / A = (rho V g) / A

P = rho g h

Since rho and g can be assume constant for some specific cases, the pressure varies only with the height of the column of water, no matter what is the area of the column (hence the diameter of the pipe). This is how we can measure pressure in meter. This case was for water, but if you use the density of mercury (Hg) instead, you could measure in "mm Hg", i.e. "equivalent pressure felt under a column of mercury with a height of X millimeters".

The same logic applies to...

1. What is Pressure?

Pressure is defined as force per unit area that a fluid exerts on its surroundings.[1] For example, pressure, P, is a function of force, F, and area, A.

P = F/A

A container full of gas contains innumerable atoms and molecules that are constantly bouncing of its walls. The pressure would be the average force of these atoms and molecules on its walls per unit of area of the container. Moreover, pressure does not have to be measured along the wall of a container but rather can be measured as the force per unit area along any plane. Air pressure, for example, is a function of the weight of the air pushing down on Earth. Thus, as the altitude increases, pressure decreases. Similarly, as a scuba diver or submarine dives deeper into the ocean, the pressure increases.

The SI unit for pressure is the Pascal (N/m2), but other common units of pressure include pounds per square inch (PSI), atmospheres (atm), bars, inches of mercury...

Background

Every now and then I hear a toilet filling for some number of seconds. There are a couple of reasons why that might happen. Maybe there's a slow leak and depending on the amount of hysteriesis between the stop filling level and the start filling level on the float the toilet is topping up. Maybe the water company has a large variation in the pressure that's feeding my house and even after the pressure regulator (Fig 2) there's still a consideerable amount of variation in the pressure inside the house.

So I'd like to monitor the water pressure. But there's no off the shelf solution for measuring your water pressure so on this page I'll document what I'm trying.

A pressure gauge is a measurement device which determines the pressure in a compressed gas or liquid. Pressure gauges are widely used all over the world, for tasks ranging from checking the tire pressure in a car before a trip to monitoring the pressure of various systems inside a nuclear power plant. There are a number of different styles of pressure gauge available, designed for various purposes, and like other measurement devices, these gauges can and should be calibrated periodically to confirm that they are working correctly when they are used for sensitive operations.

Some pressure gauges provide a pressure reading when compared to a complete vacuum, while others measure pressure relative to ambient air pressure. In both cases, the device is often mechanical in nature, with an element inside the gauge moving in response to pressure changes and pushing the part of the gauge which provides a metered reading. Some provide readouts in digital form to make them easier to...

For many negative pressure or vacuum pressure applications, 2 types of pressure sensors are available: gauge sensors or absolute pressure sensors. The reference pressure is the differentiating factor between these 2 types of sensors. The diagram below illustrates how the different methodologies work.

Absolute pressure sensors reference a vacuum, or zero pressure, and their full-scale pressure range is atmospheric pressure, which is about 14.7 psi at sea level (see item A). Hence, users have the capability of measuring up to negative 14.7 psi range of pressure.

In the case of a gauge sensor, either a single port or dual port model can be used. In the case of a dual port gauge sensor, the "lower pressure" port measures the negative or vacuum pressure (B). By accessing the "lower pressure" port, the user is mimicking applying a positive pressure to the higher pressure port as in pressure range (C). The advantage of using a gauge sensor is if the user wants to...

Overview

Pressure is defined as force per unit of area. If the same force is applied to two areas, a smaller and a larger one, the pressure would be greater for the smaller area. You will probably agree that it is less scary to be stepped on by someone wearing running shoes than by someone wearing stilettos. For example, if you try pushing a sharp knife down through a carrot or a tomato, you will cut it. The area where the force is applied is small, so the pressure is high enough to cut through the object. If, on the other hand, you use a blunt knife, you will not be able to cut through because the area is greater and the pressure is lower as a result.

The SI unit for pressure is the pascal, which is newton per square meter.

Gauge pressure is zero-referenced against ambient air pressure, so it is equal to absolute pressure minus atmospheric pressure. Absolute pressure is measured with reference to an absolute (and theoretical) vacuum. For example, an ordinary pressure gauge reading of zero does not mean there is no pressure; it simply means there is no pressure in excess of atmospheric pressure.

Gauge Pressure = Total Pressure – 1 atm

The conversion factor that needs to be used in order to convert between gauge pressure and absolute pressure is atmospheric pressure. By adding a pressure of 1 atmosphere to an absolute pressure, the corresponding gauge pressure can be determined.

Gauge pressure is measured with the standard atmospheric pressure as the baseline. Therefore, positive gauge pressures indicate that the pressure is above atmospheric pressure. Conversely, negative pressures indicate that the pressure is below atmospheric pressure.
