Water leak detection - long drive way

So you’re losing water, lots of it. You’ve shut the meter off at the house and the micrometer continues to spin. The only problem is, between your meter and the house is a long patch of driveway, readily hiding all signs of moisture. Need some tips to speed up your driveway water leak detection? Acme Detection is here to help!

Tip 1 – Determine how much water you’re losing.

It all starts at the water meter. Look at the triangle and try to measure how much water you’re losing in a given period. If it is a big leak(100 gallons or more an hour), you need to act fast. We would recommend calling a professional immediately. If it is a small leak(20 gallons an hour or less), you might be able to get away with waiting for the leak to truly present itself. The middle ground(20-80 gallons an hour)? That’s your call.

Tip 2 – Locate the pipe.

This may be a step for a professional because it probably requires a pipe locator. However a lot of times you can find some...

A water detector is an electronic device that is designed to detect the presence of water and provide an alert in time to allow the prevention of water damage. A common design is a small cable or device that lies flat on a floor and relies on the electrical conductivity of water to decrease the resistance across two contacts. The device then sounds an audible alarm together with providing onward signalling in the presence of enough water to bridge the contacts. These are useful in a normally occupied area near any infrastructure that has the potential to leak water, such as HVAC, water pipes, drain pipes, vending machines, dehumidifiers, or water tanks.

Water leak detection[edit]

Water leak detection is an expression more commonly used for larger, integrated systems installed in modern buildings or those containing valuable artifacts, materials or other critical assets where early notification of a potentially damaging leak would be beneficial. In particular, water...

Choosing the right water leak detector

There are a lot of solutions out there for water leak detection. However, only a few cover all the essential characteristics to provide reliable detection. To me, a water leak detector has to cover the following requirements:

It has to detect water immediately. Therefore the measuring contact has to be right on the surface.

It has to notify me, even if I’m not at home. Most of the water leakages stay unrecognized until severe damage has happened. Imagine you’re on holiday or imagine a water leak occurs in the basement. It could take days until it is recognized, even if you have one of those water leak detectors with a built-in beeper. Choose a water leak detector that is able to push messages to your Smartphone, so you are instantly notified wherever you are.

It has to monitor itself. This is the one characteristic, where most water leak detectors fail. Wireless water leak detectors require batteries and a wireless...

Dealing with a broken water main is usually a once-in-a-lifetime event. Thus when faced with a leaking main, many homeowners become confused, or even panic. The average lifespan of a water main is around 50 years, although some can last significantly longer while others fail prematurely. Natural wear and climatic events are the most common reasons for a water main failure to occur. Poor plumbing, including improper installation of piping or failing to use code compliant fittings when connecting to your home or the city water main, may also cause premature leaks or breaks. Do you know the signs of a water main leak under driveway to look for?

A water main leak under driveway will usually produce a stream of water that appears as pooling water on surface of your property, on the driveway, or can even come through a foundation wall. Although pooling water is the most common sign, water always flows toward the path of least resistance or a low point. So the leak may have...

We provide water leak detection and insurance assistance with the minimum of upheaval…

A water leak outside or on the ground floor can exist for a long time without detection.

Water mains and supply pipes can leak freely with no surface evidence or signs of damage; they slowly erode foundations and ultimately cause enormous damage to your home and can even spread to your neighbours property.

You might only be aware of a leak after receiving a high water bill or letter from your local water authority informing you of a suspected water leak.

The water authority regularly monitor at night to check for water loss with simple acoustic ‘listening sticks’ or use a monitoring device on your water meter called a ‘LeakFrog’.

UK Leak Detection can find these water leaks for you, we are award winners and are confident enough to say…

“If we don’t find it, you don’t pay for it”

We think this is pretty reasonable! We are the first and only in the...

Satellite Imaging Offers Accurate, Cost-Effective Distribution System Monitoring

By Shane Majetich & Lauren Guy

Today, utilities around the world utilize hardware-based monitoring systems and/or acoustic leak detection technologies as their primary tools for managing non-revenue water. They have been established as tried and tested, result-driven technologies. However, these approaches to monitoring non-revenue water are also notoriously labor intensive and smart infrastructure monitoring requires significant capital investment.

New technology solutions are being introduced to the U.S. market designed to address these challenges, including one revolutionary method from Hydromax USA. The Utilis solution, developed by a water management company based in Israel, is a new way of detecting non-revenue water leaks by analyzing spectral images from satellites. This innovative technology has been adapted from the search for water on other planets, underscoring its...

How do I install and set up LeakBot?

LeakBot comes with simple instructions on the box. As soon as you receive it, the first step is to go to leakbot.io/setup and register your LeakBot. From there on-screen instructions will also guide you. But it’s as basic as clipping it to your water pipe and pressing a button on its side. It’s that easy.

What’s my LeakBot I.D. and where do I find it?

Your LeakBot I.D. is a 6-digit alpha numeric code which you’ll find on the back of your device. You’ll need it when setting up LeakBot.

Where do I fit LeakBot?

You need to fit LeakBot on to your internal mains cold water pipe, the same one where you’ll find your internal stop tap, as far from the ground as possible but definitely before any T-junction where the pipe branches off in two directions. LeakBot has a spring-loaded clip that lets you attach it to the pipe with ease. Just make sure you clip LeakBot on with the aerial, ideally pointing upwards. If you’re...

Fire might be a homeowner’s greatest fear, but any insurance company will tell you that water is the far more common cause of property damage, even if you don’t live in an area subject to flooding. And it can come from many sources: A failing water heater, a burst pipe, a broken supply line under your sink, a clogged toilet, or even a split hose connected to your washing machine.

Just as it’s essential to have a smoke detector in each of your home’s bedrooms and common areas, you’d be wise to install leak detectors in places where water damage could start: The laundry room, water heater closet, the bathroom, under your kitchen sink, and so on. Leak alerts are arguably less important for renters, but it’s something landlords might want to consider—although that raises the issue of how the sensors would connect to the internet. More on that later.

If you think a leak sensor is something your home...

Since you have a WJ, and I have a ZJ, things are probably a little different. However, the general components should be roughly the same.

Below is a photo of the pump and filter for the ZJ.

I believe that the leak detection system is looking for leaks in gas vapor. Gas vapor leaks are not environmentally friendly.

The first thing that I would do is verify that your gas cap is on good and tight. Reset the code (either with a code reader or disconnection of the battery). If the code comes back after checking the cap, then you may want to look at the filter and the pump. They are pretty simple on the ZJ. I just washed the filter out with water. I took the pump apart and made sure that there were no parts that looked bound or broke. I reassembled the pump and ensured that all of the vapor lines were attached properly.

Also check that the electrical connections are good and free of debris.

After doing this and then clearing the code, the...

Coolant leaks can occur anywhere in the cooling system. Nine out of ten times, coolant leaks are easy to find because the coolant can be seen dripping, spraying, seeping or bubbling from the leaky component. The first symptom of trouble is usually engine overheating. But your car may also have a Low Coolant indicator lamp. If you suspect your vehicle has a coolant leak, open the hood and visually inspect the engine and cooling system for any sign of liquid leaking from the engine, radiator or hoses. The color of the coolant may be green, orange or yellow depending on the type of antifreeze in the system. You may also notice a sweet smell, which is a characteristic odor of ethylene glycol antifreeze.

The most common places where coolant may be leaking are:

A worn seal on the water pump shaft can leak coolant.

Water pump...
