Weird junk accumulating in kitchen faucet aerator?

Those black particles appear to be from an activated carbon filter that is probably failing. Check your house for one of the filter housings to see if one of these filters is present.

If it is activated charcoal particles, it says they are non-toxic and food safe according to the Brita website. Since you are only seeing it on the kitchen faucet, the filter may be located under the sink.

There is a similar question on Brita's FAQ page:

Questions about products and water filtration

There are black particles in my water after filtering - what are these?

The black particles are parts of one of BRITA's filter media, the activated carbon. The granulated activated carbon is made of coconut shells. Like each natural product, coconut shells are subject to natural variances regarding product quality. This can lead to abrasion of parts of the carbon into your filtered water. To eradicate any carbon dust which may be present, preparation of your...

A faucet aerator is a tiny disc shaped fitting that goes on the end of virtually any type of modern faucet. Their only purpose is to reduce the faucet’s flow rate by mixing in air with water to increase its pressure so naturally, you get fooled into thinking that it actually is throwing out a lot of water. Without an aerator, the water will usually fall in a clumsy off-center manner with a lot of splashing in the sink. Similarly, flow reducers act to reduce the water used but they don’t usually use air to do so. They simply provide a steady stream of water without any higher pressures or aeration.

Since, the aerator or flow reducer is the last part of a faucet that water flows through, they are monumental in deciding the flow rate of the faucet. Usually, in kitchen faucets you need a higher flow rate to quickly fill sinks and pots but with bathroom faucets, high flow rate is a waste of water that can be used elsewhere. In fact, the kitchen sink doesn’t even require...

If you aren't a fellow DIY'r (or if you think you don't have the skills or desire to do simple repairs or improvements in your house) don't stop reading! Trust me.. once you see how easy it really is, how much money you can save doing it yourself, and how great it comes out when you are through you are going to be empowered too.
A lot of women I talk to are afraid to tackle projects at home and often lament that it is "their husband's area of expertise." But I know if I waited for my husband to get around to a 'Honey Do' list I would die before it happened. And that is how I got started blogging about home improvement. I bought a house.. it needed a LOT of improvement.. and I had no money and nobody else willing to do it. It was up to me.
My number one piece of advice for anyone thinking about tackling a project but freaking out because they feel clueless is this: DON'T BE AFRIAD!
With the exception of a few things (like electricity), a home improvement project (even...

You can choose from different types of aerators so it should be relatively easy to find one that fits your needs. Each aerator is rated with a GPM number, gallons per minute. The GPM number measures the amount of water that passed through the aerator each minute when in use. You can choose an aerator anywhere between 2.5 GPM to .5 GPM. An important thing to keep in mind is, the lower the GPM the longer it will take you to fill something up.

Some aerators come with a flow restriction lever on them. These are great for kitchen sinks because they allow you to turn the water of with a flip of lever on the nozzle. When you need the water back on you just flip the lever again and the water is restored as it was when you turned it off. This decreases the amount of time you have to spend readjusting the water temperature. So you can save money and stop scalding your hands all at the same...

My water bill last December doubled and I blame my kitchen faucet. When the bill came I wasn’t surprised actually, just annoyed. Six months later and it still bothers me.

It did have something to do with the 17 house guests that stayed for Christmas. (yes, of course I love my relatives)

The fact that we constantly cooked that week, kept our Energy Star dishwasher dutifully cycling away. Any remaining dirty dishes got hand washed.

You know the drill: a kitchen volunteer scrubs, suds then rinses with the hot water running – - often straight down the drain.

Not to discourage free help but, how does one tactfully approach grown men and young adults about their thriftless dish washing technique?

In this instance I chose to shut up, wait for the bill but that’s not all…

Until we replace our kitchen faucet with a conserving WaterSense model, here’s the exact guerrilla tactic I used.

I simply replaced the kitchen faucet aerator cartridge...

A faucet aerator is a simple fitting that screws into the end of most bathroom and kitchen faucets. The outside is a hollow metal cylinder with one threaded end that fits the threads on the faucet spout (they're usually inside the spout, so you don't see them). Inside the cylinder is a tiny screen, a rubber washer, a mixer disc and perhaps a few other parts, such as a flow restrictor or an inner plastic housing.

The aerator's purpose is to add air to the water flow and create a consistent, straight stream. The only problem with aerators is that they can get clogged with mineral deposits, leading to low water flow or an erratic stream. Cleaning an aerator is one of the simplest household fixes, but you must remember two things: 1) be careful not to damage the aerator when you're taking it off, and 2) make note (or take a photo) of the order of the pieces inside the aerator before you take it apart; they have to go back in exactly the same order.

@Golf07: Put a full 2-liter water bottle in your toilet tank. The displaced water saved with each flush can really add up.

If you have kids (or adults) that like to leave the water running when they are brushing their teeth, a faucet aerator is a great solution for them.

I don't think many people realize how much water they waste by doing this every day. I used to have a bad habit of letting the water run while I was doing the dishes.

Now that I am making more of a conscious effort to conserve on water, I use faucet aerators on most all of the sinks in my house.

I got a few complaints from the kids at first, but they are used to it now. They also realize the importance of conserving water, but it can be hard to do sometimes unless you have some "encouragement" from mom.

Ever noticed your faucet spitting and spraying in all directions? Well, you likely have a clogged aerator. An aerator is a mesh screen that covers the end of the faucet. It constricts the flow slightly, increasing the water pressure and reducing water usage.

But, if your water has a lot of minerals in it, over time your aerator may become clogged and need to be replaced. You are certainly welcome to call My Plumber, and we would be happy to replace it for you. But it is one of those little household maintenance tasks that you can learn to deal with yourself if you like.

Turn off the water going to the sink. Shut-off valves should be located under the sink. If you can’t find any valves under the sink or they do not work you will have to turn off the main water valve. This isn’t *strictly* necessary, but it is a good safety practice, because sometimes faucets will become so corroded that when you try to remove the aerator, the end breaks off. It doesn’t happen often,...

Change

It wasn't trendy, funny, nor was it coined on Twitter, but we thought change told a real story about how our users defined 2010. Unlike in 2008, change was no longer a campaign slogan. But, the term still held a lot of weight. Here's an excerpt from our Word of the Year announcement in 2010:

The national debate can arguably be summarized by the question: In the past two years, has there been enough change? Has there been too much? Meanwhile, many Americans continue to face change in their homes, bank accounts and jobs. Only time will tell if the latest wave of change Americans voted for in the midterm elections will result in a negative or positive...
