Why do only some DSL ports work for internet in my house?

Have you tested that the problematic jacks are actually wired to your house's phone system? Just take a land phone and plug it in - do you get dial tone?

If you're not getting a dial tone, these jacks are disconnected. Perhaps they were wired to a second line that is no longer active, or simply cut during some other project. To fix that, you'd need to reattach them, tracing the cables and re-connecting them to your main phone service lines.

If the jacks work for phone but not DSL, there may be a DSL filter installed between your main phone line and those jacks. These can be wired inline somewhere, or even built into the phone jacks themselves. Check the jacks first - do they have DSL-related labels? Can you remove the cover and look inside to see if a filter is there? Perhaps they are connected to another jack that has a DSL filter.

If the filter is wired in elsewhere, you would need to trace the wires from jack to your main phone service termination point to...

One computer has Windows XP, and a 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller. The other has Windows 2000, and an Intel Pro/100+ Alert on LAN Management Adapter. As for third party firewalls, I'm not sure. I know for the actual connection, we have WEP security.

What IPCONFIG information do you need? Both computers are DHCP enabled, and Auto Configuration enabled.

Just to test, I had a 75 foot ethernet cable run from the modem to the mac, and the connection did not work. The mac could not connect through 802.1X. However, when I attached the router back to the modem, the mac connected wirelessly through airport.

I don't know if this helps, but prior to last week, when we had a storm and the power lines were worked on, all three machines were working perfectly fine.

And as far as I know, the Westell modem/router is not...

We recently moved in to a house with pre-wired ethernet connections. So there is at least one cat5e jack in every room. I connected my internet modem with the rooms by using a TPlink Switch (24 ports).

So I noticed for some of the ports, it works for routers and VOIP devices, so apparently internet is working and the connection is good, but when I connect my laptop/desktop to the same port, with the same ethernet cable, it says limited connectivity (with an exclamation mark on the network icon). I don't quite understand why it would work for some device but not my computers?

I could have used wireless but I really wanted ethernet connection to work for my computers - that is why I paid for pre-wiring the whole house after all.

Thanks for your input in...

So, this appears, on the surface, to be a network admin (serverfault) question, but I'm looking for a lower level answer from a network hacker type.

I was pretty much oblivious to how networks actually work in real life until I started my summer internship. Then, by way of having no other option (internship is at a pretty networking-centric place and I have to put together testbeds for testing [among other things] networks), I became familiar with them. For one thing, the fact that there's no "This goes out to the internet!" port on commercial switches was kind of surprising, until you reasoned about how it works (starts out like a hub til it 'learns' where ips are in terms of the physical port, i guess?).

And after this home-crafted self-discovery (or possibly, error in thinking), I'm back at the extended stay hotel and looking at my cheap little home switch, and it has an uplink port.

Now my question to you, Network hackers (in the good way), is...

So I have ethernet ports in every room, and I'd like to somehow hook up the internet to them. Any advice?

So today I was messing around and realized that what I thought were phone ports were actually ethernet ports. (maybe both?)

I'd like to figure out a way to feed my internet connection to the wiring in my house, to output the internet from all the ports in my house.

After a few google searches, people have been recommending looking for a hub or centralized port of some sort. I found something that MIGHT be it, in the master bedroom closet, the picture is here. It appears to just be an ethernet cable sticking out of the wall, tied to a bunch of other cables with no ends.

Any advice is much...

When posed with such a question, most of us think that we own a computer, we have a telephone line or a satellite TV cable, and a modem; that's all there is to know about how the Internet works. But, this answer sums up only a small percentage of the whole story.

The Working of Internet

Working of the Internet is based on a series of protocols. A protocol is a set of rules or a kind of agreement, wherein two parties agree to abide by a set of rules. In this case, these rules govern the transmission and reception of data, to and from a computer.

To know how protocols work, it's important to understand the protocol layers. The network is firstly divided into various layers and protocols that are set for each of these layers. Let's see what the protocols are, according to layers:

Application Layer Protocol
The application layer acts as the interface between the user and the system. This layer has application-specific protocols like hypertext transfer...

Our broadband account has a 60 GB monthly cap but we keep exceeding it. I'm trying to get the younger members of the family to understand they can't watch online videos all day but I need to be able to show who's downloading the most.

Most of the internet usage comes from the main PC in the house. Is there a way of recording network usage per user on a Windows 7 PC? Notice the "per user" requirement - there seem to be plenty of tools that will measure internet usage from a single user account.

Thanks for any help.

Edit: Yes, each user has their own account. I'm not suggesting we use 60 GB per month just on video, but someone is using far more than their fair share - least I think so. This tool would help to prove...

The greatest thing about the Internet is that nobody really owns it. Everyone can access it. But not everyone know how the Internet work. Well, it’s good to be informed about what are we using. So let’s talk all about the working of the Internet. It is a global collection of networks, both big and small connected together in many different ways to form the single entity that we know as the Internet. The name ‘Internet’ comes from this idea of interconnected networks.

Since its beginning in 1969, the Internet has grown from four host computer systems to tens of millions. However, just because nobody owns the Internet, it doesn’t mean it is not monitored and maintained in different ways. The Internet Society, a non-profit group established in 1992, oversees the formation of the policies and protocols that define how we use and interact with the Internet. There are many concepts used in internet and it is very hard to understand but i divided those internet concepts in several...

" Work At Home On The Internet " : " Start Home Based Business " : " Home based Business Idea " and " Work From Home "

I remember the first time I typed those words into my browser. It was astounding how many people around the world were doing the same thing.

After doing some extensive research I also found that those very words, " Work At Home On The Internet "are changing thousands upon thousands of lives in a very short time, and for many, was only a faint and distant dream until the internet explosion took hold.

Those same words (or a variation of) have literally changed hundreds of thousands of lives all around the world!

There are a lot of computer uses. People use computers in many ways. These devices are multi-purpose tools and many of us can’t imagine live without them. I’m the one of them. Mostly I use my computer in my free time for entertainment and communication and sometimes in my study.

I’ve chosen to study informatics and that’s why computer is necessary for me. Although I have already started my studies but I can’t say that I used my PC a lot. Fiirst of all I’ll need it to program. I know that we will learn such programming languages as C++, Fortran and others. For those who have not computer at home is impossible to become good specialists of informatics. Also I use computer for solving various mathematical tasks. It is quite useful in solving very difficult propositions. For these purposes are used special mathematic programs such as Maple, Mathcad. I must say I need computer to make assignments of maths, english, annd other subjects. Furthermore I work with application...

Tutorial Overview

Topics covered in this tutorial (click link to jump to topic):

To understand the Internet you need to understand three main areas:

the fundamental transport protocol i.e. how data is moved around the Internet domain names and domain name resolution i.e. how things are named or referenced on the Internet servers, routers and clients i.e. the hardware of the Internet

Transport Protocol - TCP/IP

The fundamental means of moving data around the Internet is controlled by a protocol called TCP/IP, or transmission control protocol/internet protocol. TCP/IP is also used on private networks, like your office LAN or home network. As the name suggests, TCP/IP is the combination of TCP and IP protocols working...

Many people wish to work at Google, Microsoft or at IBM because of the benefits.
Not many can make it. This article discusses one of the reasons…

I bet one of the key questions asked during their job interviews is:
“Why do you want to work here?”
STOP, it’s a tricky question!

The answer to the question “why do you want to work for our company?” is a key factor (make or break) in the company’s decision as to whether one would fit the position or not.

It appears that many companies – big companies, startup companies and even schools and institutes keep asking this question during an interview.
What does the employer want to know by asking this question?

The employer wishes to observe:
1. Are you going to take any job offer (shooting in all directions..) or did you seriously consider your job search target and career objectives?

2. What do you know about the company and this job? Have you done your homework?

3. Do you...

Even though the Internet is still a young technology, it's hard to imagine life without it now. Every year, engineers create more devices to integrate with the Internet. This network of networks crisscrosses the globe and even extends into space. But what makes it work?

To understand the Internet, it helps to look at it as a system with two main components. The first of those components is hardware. That includes everything from the cables that carry terabits of information every second to the computer sitting in front of you.

Other types of hardware that support the Internet include routers, servers, cell phone towers, satellites, radios, smartphones and other devices. All these devices together create the network of networks. The Internet is a malleable system -- it changes in little ways as elements join and leave networks around the world. Some of those elements may stay fairly static and make up the backbone of the Internet. Others are more...

OK, here's the deal. You want only a 2-way splitter behind the modem for max speeds/stable connection. You very likely have 2 splitters - one that goes between the modem, pole, and 2nd splitter. Then the 2nd one goes on to the TV's. I assume you don't have some kind of 'booster' on the TV lines as those are generally 1-way and stop cable modem signals dead, for obvious reasons.

The modem will tell you how much power it is trying to transmit with (lower=better), and how much it's recieving (probably between -10 to +10). The modem's manual should tell you what the rough limit is on that model. If it's borderline already on the first splitter, then splitting it further is likely the source of your problems.

It also doesn't hurt to unhook and reconnect (or just tighten) the connectors... Might just be loose? Just use the classic process of elimination and an extension cord to check all the lines/splitter outputs. A laptop taken outside with you can be very handy for when...

There’s nothing worse than your Wi-Fi connection dropping when you’re right in the middle of watching a movie or enjoying an intense online gaming session but there is something you can do about it. Here we will discuss some of the causes for a dropped wireless connection as well as some solutions.

Your Router Is Overburdened By Heavy Network Use

Some of you may be experiencing a Wi-Fi blackout when your network is being utilized the most (simultaneous streaming, downloading, large file transferring, online gaming, etc) which can cause routers to temporarily fail. Your router may be working fine but is just not the right match for your networking needs. Don’t limit your internet use because your router can’t handle it – pick a router that can accommodate all of your connected devices and networking demands.

Your Wi-Fi Signal Is Weak or Doesn’t Extend Far Enough

Wi-Fi connections can easily drop when the connected device is located near the edge of your...

All of it stop working????

First, you must check is the electrical supply to both device is on. :D

I know it sound silly, but that is always the case, but better be sure.

Then, if the electrical supply is there, check if the switch port light or the router port light is blinking. If there is a blinking light, it means there is an activity, if not light is on or static light, it means something wrong.

Then, find a good, tested patch cord cable and connect a pc/laptop to the swithc/router using the cable directly and see if there is any blinking light activity, if there is still none, it means the switch is spoiled. Must go and get another one, this is possibly due to power surge. Home user never use power regulator on network switches, which is cheap and save a lot of problem and hassle.

But, how do you get access to the NET to ask this question this...
