Why is my shower head pressure low?

1

Low water pressure in the shower is a pretty big inconvenience. Not only does it take longer to shower when the water pressure is low, it’s also less satisfying. So why might the water pressure be low?

The problem could lie in the shower head. Minerals and other debris can deposit themselves in the shower head over time and cause it to clog up, lowering the flow. A simple fix is to get a new shower head, which is relatively inexpensive. Some people also advocate taking out the washer which constricts the flow in the shower head. Note that while this will increase the flow, it doesn’t actually increase the pressure. To increase the actual water pressure, you’d have to increase the velocity of the water coming out of the shower head. However, increasing the flow should make for a better shower experience.

What is the cause of low water pressure?

Sometimes, low water pressure may not just be in your shower. If that is the case, you may need to address other...

After a long day at work, you start your normal “get ready for bed” routine.

You eat dinner, prep lunch for the next day, jump in the shower, but then, your water pressure is low.

Frustrated is an understatement when it takes (what feels like) 20 minutes to wash the shampoo out of your hair.

But low water pressure is fairly easy to diagnose, and so is calling a plumber. Here are a few of the most common reasons why people see low water pressure in their bathroom.

There’s A Mineral Buildup.

When minerals harden inside of your plumbing pipes, it makes it more difficult for water to flow freely.

Older homes that are built with galvanized iron pipes may find that they are more prone to mineral deposits over time.

There’s A Leak.

If you have a plumbing leak somewhere in your home, big or small, it will affect the water pressure in your home.

The Nozzle Is...

Why a shower has no pressure can be caused by a few different reasons. Keeping this simple, what you should first determine if the shower is the only fixture with the problem. Look at the other fixtures in the home and the same bathroom as the affected shower and check the pressure/volume of the water coming out. Check the fixtures with several different...

A high pressure shower head is a type of shower head that is designed to maximize the pressure of the water flow. The highest pressure can be achieved by the smaller designs, with minimal holes for the water to flow out of. High water pressure can still be achieved to a lesser degree in larger shower heads, as well as hand-held shower heads. There are also high pressure shower heads designed to minimize water output, while maintaining pressure, for the environmentally conscious.

Many people find that a high pressure head is a great alternative to frustrating, low-pressure shower heads. Anyone who has suffered through a shower with low water pressure knows what an unsatisfying experience it can be. Low water pressure simply does not clean as well as high water pressure can. Higher water pressure from the right shower head won't leave soap residue in hair or on the skin like lower water pressure does.

Different types of spray patterns are available with a high pressure...

If you have low water pressure throughout your entire house it is likely going to be caused by either your municipal water supply or the supply plumbing on your property. You can consult your local plumber who can check your plumbing for corrosion and blockages. If this is the case, you or your plumber might be able to fix the issue by adjusting your pressure reducing valve. Otherwise some old pipework may need replacing.
