Wiring a three way light switch

Wiring of 3-way light switches is certainly more complicated than that of the more common single-pole switch, but you can figure it out if you follow our either of our 3-way switch wiring diagram. With a pair of 3-way switches, either switch can make or break the connection that completes the circuit to the light. The whole wiring a light switch project can be completed in a few hours if you don’t have to do any drywall removal and repair. Keep reading the 3 way switch wiring diagram to learn light switch wiring.

Directions:

To add the switch, you’ll use one of two wiring a light switch diagrams, depending on whether the power comes to your light switch first (the most common situation) or to the light fixture first. Either way, complete these five steps for 3 way light switch wiring:

Turn off the correct circuit at your electrical panel. Add an electrical box for the second three-way switch in the basement. It’s likely...

Ceiling Fan Installation

I have just installed a ceiling fan (with light kit)in my gameroom but I am not sure about the wiring. The fan has a black and white wire and the electrical box has a black, red and white. I am putting the fan on a dual switch so I what the fan controlled on one switch and the light on the other. But the problem comes in on how to do the wiring when I only have one hot wire coming from the fan. Does anyone know how I should handle this so that each switch controls a functions?

Depending on what products you used and how you connected everything, the light kit should have its own black (sometimes blue) wire. You may have connected this to the fan's black resulting in only one hot wire. You can connect the hot wire from the light kit directly to the hot wire from the switch.

Typically either 14-2 or 12-2 Romex cable is used in these types of circuits. 14-2 Romex cable is used for 15 amp circuits and 12-2 Romex cable is used for 20 amp circuits.

Roughing in the Electrical Wiring

To rough in a circuit where two lights are controlled from one switch a Romex cable should first be fed from the panel into the light switch electrical box. This is your feed cable. A second Romex cable should be fed from the light switch to one of the light electrical boxes.

A third Romex cable should be fed between the two light electrical boxes. Learn how to pull Romex cable through a wall here.

Finally, twist the two bare ground wires together using a “Greeny” wire nut. Note that one of the wires should protrude out the end of the “Greeny”. Fasten this bare ground wire to the green screw on the switch. Make sure that when attaching wires to screws that the wires are bent into a curved shape that are mounted in a...

Ok from the plug run a cable to the new switch box, the cable should match in size to what you have in the current outlet (ie 14-2 or 12-2) In the out let the new cable will tie color for color, black to where black is connected and white to where white is connected, ground to ground, In the switch box you need to run another piece of cable up to your new light, should be same size again (14-2 or 12-2 depending on whats in your outlet) once you do this you will have 2 cables in the switch box. In switch box, whites tie together and your done with them, grounds tie together and run a piece to green screw on switch, 1 black goes to one brass screw on switch, other black goes to the other brass screw on switch, you cant get the blacks in wrong place, as long as one is on one screw and other is on the other screw. now in the light box, you should have black white and ground, your light fixture will tie color for color black to black, white to white and ground to ground, and that is it....

2 way switching means having two or more switches in different locations to control one lamp. They are wired so that operation of either switch will control the light. This arrangement is often found in stairways, with one switch upstairs and one switch downstairs or in long hallways with a switch at either end.

Here we have a two way switching system that utilises two single gang two-way switches and a three wire control, shown in the new harmonised cable colours. It is possible to achieve a similar result using a two wire control which, although it saves on cable, is not recommended. This is the preferred approach.

Here we a have a schematic (Fig 1) which makes it easy to visualise how this circuit works. In this state the lamp is off, changing the position of either switch will switch the live to the lamp turning it on. If you now change the position of the other switch the circuit is broken once again.

If the light and fan are two physically separate items then it is posible if there are two hot wires in the switch box and you can cap the wire off like the rest suggested. If you find only one hot wire then likely another hot wire was paralleled out from the first device at that device instead of at the switch box.

If the light is physically a part of the fan then you may have to tinker with the fan itself if you also find only one hot wire in the switch box.

Either case I wouldn't be happy if I were the landlord and you did any modifications without telling me.

I strongly suggest getting an electrician to do it but if you decide to do it yourself, make sure you get someone to be with you in case something goes wrong and can call for...

How Does Switch Wiring Work?

The way a light switch is wired depends on whether the power comes into the light box or the switch box first. If power comes into the switch box first, the neutral white line from the service panel and the white line that leads to the light are spliced together. The hot black wire from the power source travels through the switch and from there to the light. Flipping the switch interrupts the flow of electricity to the light, turning it off and on.

If the line carrying power comes into the light box first, the circuit must still be wired so the switch interrupts the black line. The white wire from the service panel is wired to one side of the light. The black wire is spliced to a black wire in a cable that runs to the switch. That cable's white wire is also connected to the switch and runs back to and is connected to the light. Flipping the switch interrupts the flow of electricity, and the switch does its job.

Because the...

It isn't unusual to wire two or more light and switch combinations from the same power source -- in fact, it's common practice. Typically, the source is a circuit breaker in the main electrical panel that has a rating large enough to handle the lights. It's possible to mount the switches in the same or in different electrical boxes, but the latter case involves the extra task of running a circuit cable between the boxes. You maintain the continuity of the hot wire in the circuit cable by forming pigtails at the points where it connects to the switches.

Install appropriate electrical boxes for the lights and switches. You can mount the switches side-by-side in a double-gang electrical box or in different locations, each in a single-gang box. For each fixture and switch you have the choice of nailing a rough-in box to a stud or rafter or mounting a remodeling box on the drywall.

Run 12-gauge electrical cable between each switch and the light it controls. Pull one end of...

This article addresses how to run two lights from one switch. This common question comes from a do-it-yourselfer working on his garage wiring who required some assistance wiring a circuit in his garage so that he could control two lights with one switch.

Q: I am going to build a new garage and am planning my electrical wiring.

What my plan will be is to wire a circuit to include the following:

– Run a #14 -2 wire from the sub panel box to a device box for a plug receptacle, then to a light box (octagon box), and then to another light box (octagon box) and finally to another two device boxes for plug receptacles.

What I want to do is have both lights work off the same switch.

I know that if I was to run a light switch to only one light I would connect the black wire from the switch via the light box (octagon box) directly onto the light fixture gold terminal and the white wire from the supply cable i.e.: (coming from...
